Abducted In Plain Sight is jaw dropping but it didn't adequately probe the motivations of the principals who acted so bizarrely. I found it an incredible story but nothing more.

Abducted In Plain Sight

Had to see what all the fuss was about. I've definitely never laughed so much at a documentary about child abuse. I mean the child abuse was terrible but wtf did I just watch.

Spoiler:
I think it's safe to say 2 things: 1) dad is a closet gay/bi and enjoyed that handjob quite a bit more than he says he did. 2) Both parents were not telling the whole truth.

In addition to that, there's the small town religious nutjob mentality of pretending nothing bad can ever happen to us, and if something bad is clearly happening, just hope it will go away and don't call the police or anything because we'd rather have our daughter get raped repeatedly than to have to feel bad feelings and have the neighbors talking about us.

Yeah, while I do have a very cynical and sarcastic sense of humour, I'm not sitting through a doc like, say, "Dear Zachary" or "Capturing the Friedmans" laughing about how "hilarious" all of it is. But I did find myself laughing quite a bit during this particular one. Just way too bizarre not to imo.

Abducted in Plain Site is basically a parable about the toxic nature of religion.

It would have been a much better documentary they'd explored the small town church angle, which like you I think is key to lots of the strange behaviour.

p.s glad I wasn't the only one who found it darkly amusing.

They were so freaking dumb and I was shocked that they were able to write a book. These people are MaM level stupid.

The parents aren't just dumb and naive, they were narcissists. Almost every decision they made was for the benefit of themselves and the public image of the family at the expense of their daughter's safety.

Fyre on Netflix is really good. Crazy story.

Also just finished Jinx, the Life and Deaths of Robert Durst on HBOgo. Highly recommended.

I've watched both, I preferred Fyre (Netflix). It's a higher end production and the narrative felt more consistent. However, Fyre Fraud (Hulu) has an interview with Billy McFarland, the mastermind that ****ed it all up.

Watch the Netflix one first, imo. If you find it really interesting, then go for the Hulu one. A lot of the info repeats, but still a few more nuggets of new info to keep you interested.

Watched Fyre Fraud a week ago and finally watched Fyre last night.

The Netflix doc felt like it better explained what happened and kept a more even pace (the Hulu doc has a rush up to the day of the event and sort of skips over some of the most tense time immediately before), but as others have said, the Hulu doc puts Billy in front of the camera, and it's interesting to see him squirm.

The Netflix doc was Exec produced by the guy(s) that ran ****Jerry, the social media company that helped drum up interest in Fyre Fest and who, in a lot of people's opinion, has a share of the responsibility for everything that happened.

If you've only got 90 minutes, I would say watch the Netflix doc over the Hulu one, just know you are getting a version of the story from one of the people involved that probably paints them in a more glowing light than is true.

Ok watching Dawn Wall now. I don't know how it ends.

But I do get kind of annoyed how documentaries make someone clearly the bad guy - like the bald guy in this one. His face never fits on the screen, the lighting makes him look like a zombie. The other dudes get different backdrops and are shown in flattering light. Zombie foil dude is just always shown looking like some scary skeletor.

Just show everyone in normal light, with normal zoom, and let the viewers decide imo.

Ok they keep talking about all these falls Ammon took on Wings of Steel, and they still haven't shown one yet. Annoying.

Wait - never mind. Apparently I somehow accidentally watched something called Assault on El Capitan (which was pretty entertaining - about the first ascent of Wings of Steel 30 years ago and the 2nd ascent recently).

Watching Dawn Wall now.

Ok yeah the actual Dawn Wall is awesome. I read the first book that came out about Tommy & Beth and the others in the Kyrgyzstan adventure, and remember the 20/20 about it. At the beginning of the doc I kept thinking I know I recognize these guys fro somewhere. Crazy.

They didn't really go into it in the doc (yet?) - but the guy he shoved off the cliff turned up alive. So basically no one believed them for a while and thought they made up the whole story. Then the guy admitted that it happened pretty much the exact way the kids described it.

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but anyone who likes climbing documentaries should watch Touching the Void.

The Price Of Everything

This is a new doc about art and the price of art. Similar to Blurred Lines: Inside The Art World from 2017. What I most liked about this doc was the interview with a super rich old dude who has hundreds of millions worth of art in his apartment/condo. He seems surprisingly level headed about his hobby.

Also it confirmed my opinion that Jeff Koons is a much better salesman than artist and office building lobbies are the perfect place for his work.

4.5/5

Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist

Biography of fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. I've always found her clothes horrendous. I thought maybe this doc would help me understand her aesthetic and personality better. It didn't. If anything I hate her more now. Ugly person making ugly clothes. As a documentary it wasn't bad though.

Fyre - good, definitely had my jaw dropping at points. I can’t believe he had the gall to actually be there when the people showed up, I think that means he is completely delusional.

Abducted in Plain Sight - uh in the plain sight of legally ******ed parents, sure. I mean it’s a sick story but COME ON mom and dad.

I truly believe you can only be that ****ing oblivious if you are stupid enough to adhere to a set of religious beliefs as absurd as those of the LDS faith. The fact that he got the dad to jack him off had me in stitches

So after throwing money at my screen and nothing happening, I managed to watch Free Solo. I've been waiting for this doc since I watched the first trailer like 5 months ago and after watching all the climbing docs I watched kinda preparing for Free Solo I became a huge Alex fan. I watched so much stuff about him/this that after actually watching it I feel like it wasn't my first time. It wasn't underwhelming because the doc delivered, but I wish I had watched it earlier when my expectations weren't so high.
Best reasons to watch it:
- one of (If not the) greatest physical and mental feats I have ever seen.
- amazing cinematography
- alex's personality makes for great TV. It's great watching his autistic behavior and how he deals with the people he cares about.

The Ted Bundy Tapes

The most fascinating thing about psychopaths is how so many people love them and refuse to believe they could do anything wrong.

I'm pretty sure the judge at the first trial was attracted to Bundy in some way.

The Barney Fifing from the small town cops was hilarious.
