Yeah, I watch documentaries for entertainment purposes, not to get "informed" (unless it's a science doc, I guess).

I always chuckle when people get into heated arguments about whether that guy from Making a Murderer is guilty or not, when all their information is coming from the doc itself. It should be pretty clear that what you see on the screen in these docs is - at best - never the whole story, and at worst full of made up bs.

I loved Making a Murderer, though. Entertaining as ****.

As u can see, I don't post often relative to my join date - but when I do some tend to be fairly long. So if u don't like longish - just skip on by.

I watch lots of docs if they are interesting & well made. One they are showing a lot on HBO these days is the story of Elizabeth Holmes which is titled THE INVENTOR: OUT FOR BLOOD IN SILICON VALLEY.

One of the producers is Alex Gibney who has become involved in lots of good doc's for quite some time now. The one he did about Scientology is very good. Most folks probably know that the little aggressive leader of this CULT (as opposed to religion - that went through tons of lawsuits with the IRS to be called a religion so they wouldn't have to pay taxes on their vast wealth) David Miscavage who is a little psycho.

He loves to trot out his 2 big Hollywood celeb's Tom Cruise and John Travolta as members. They gotta have a lot of dirt on these guys because the Scientology story is the most bizarre cult/religion story ever - & of course it was started by L. Ron Hubbard who wrote sci-fi short stories for little pulp magazines in the 50's & wrote the Dianetics book (in the 60's) which became a best seller.

This is the crazy Scientology story in a nutshell.

Back to Holmes & her company

https://www.hbo.com/documentaries/th...theranos-panel

I'm sure some folks here have seen this doc about how Holmes conned her way into getting them to believe that she was another Gates or Jobs. Her thing was blood withdrawal. Instead of the withdrawal where 3 to 4 tubes is taken in a venous manner.

Her company would just need a drop of blood from a finger prick to evaluate the health of an individual to the tune of over 200 indicators of health issues caught so early they could be cured or abated.

So her personality and looks (which ironically is like a female Dracula) & lineage (like how they indicate which horses will be born strong from parents were great race horses) enables her to get very wealthy white men (including investors and board members like former Secretary of State George Schultz whose grandson Tyler worked for Holmes company & told his grandfather that he had deduced the whole thing was a scam & GS still would not believe him until the whole scam finally fell like a deck of cards).

So she had gotten her company valued at 9 billion which she started dropping out of Stanford at 19 & at 31 it was valued at the price above & when the indisputable truth of it all came out about 4 years later when the company's true value was found to be NOTHING (A Big Goose Egg).

She and her boyfriend & CEO of her company "Sunny" were charged with FRAUD & CONSPIRACY & she dumped him (he was like 25-30 years older). It was really something the number of older white men who bought in to her story (including Bill Clinton & experienced Venture Capitalist types).

She got 100's of millions of dollars from them.

ANYWAY - WOULD LIKE TO HEAR ANY THOUGHTS OR INSIGHTS FROM OTHER FOLKS WHO HAVE SEEN THIS DOCUMENTARY.

P.S. - I found in another documentary that the giant Corporations who make medical devices rake in more dough & have more pull than Big Pharma which I found hard to believe.

Although I think the biggest one's deal in both & they lobby our puppet political hacks that spend more time raising money for their next election than they do on trying to help their constituents. The politicians aren't allowed to be fund raising from their "official offices.

So their is a designated building close by where many days 3/4's of their time is devoted to them & their staffers contacting donors from the "official" building set up for this function.

P.P.S. - At the end of the movie "The Post" with Spielberg, Hanks & Streep about THE PENTAGON PAPERS & VIETNAM, a written quote comes on the screen at the end of it which said this.

THE FREE PRESS IS TO SERVE THE GOVERNED - NOT THE GOVERNORS.

I think that this quote is just one of the endless things these days leading the
U.S.A.'s downward spiral or as my Mom used to say "To Hell in a Hand-basket".

that hurt my eyes and i didn't read it, but the consensus is the doc sucks and doesn't offer much beyond the short segment on 60 minutes a while back, but that the book is great:

there's also a movie with j-law coming.

I checked out your link & saw that the book was written by the Wall Street Journal reporter who broke the story (John Carreyrou) which left no doubt about her burning desire & monster ego to join the exclusive club of Gates, Jobs, etc.

Even though her ascension to get & try to stay there was just a house of cards/scam that had to come tumbling down.....& the only question was how long it was going to take.

Might give it a read considering that books almost always give u a better understanding of the topic.

I watch the movie ONE HOUR PHOTO.

HEY - THIS POST HIT THE JACKPOT FOR ME. NEVER PLAYED THE SLOTS MUCH, BUT ONCE I WAS PLAYING A SLOT MACHINE WHERE YOU HIT THE JACKPOT WITH 777

IT WAS A DOLLAR SLOT - SO OF COURSE I HAD 3 BUCKS IN IT - NOT PLAYING MAX COINS ON ANY SLOT IS A MISTAKE. I THINK THEY GAVE ME A CHECK FOR 3 GRAND & 500 IN CASH. THEY WANT YOU TO GIVE THE PERSON WHO BRINGS YOU YOUR CASH A BIG TIP WHICH IS PRETTY SILLY.

BUT MOST PEOPLE DO IT FEELING LUCKY THEY WON WHATEVER THEY DID - NOT THINKING THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY WON WHATEVER THEY DID - ALMOST ALL ARE STILL DOWN A SMALL FORTUNE IF THEY ARE SLOT MACHINE ADDICTS.

I THINK THE ONLY BIG TIME SLOT MACHINE WINNERS ARE THOSE FEW WHO HIT FOR A FORTUNE (AND THEN QUIT PLAYING) - SORTA LIKE THE LOTTERY WINNERS.

Free Solo was absolutely amazing, everyone should see it. Watched it three times thus far. Just mindblowing stuff.

At The Heart Of Gold

The team doctor for US women's gymnastics was a known pedo, molesting girls for at least 20 years before there was any real investigation. Eventually over 100 women made accusations against him.

The Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story

Lou Pearlman is the fat weird guy who started The Backstreet Boys and N Sync. One thing I've leaned from watching documentaries about scammers is that they've always been scammers for their entire life and always will be scammers.

Grass Is Greener is very well done and informative. Merica! Vomit.

“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

- John Ehrlichman, former Nixon domestic affairs adviser

Posted in OOTV, maybe some recommendations here too. These are all tv shows, not movies, but happy for either.

For anyone who enjoys climbing/extreme sport movies, The North Face has a bunch of amazing short documentaries on their Youtube channel.

This is their most recent one, about skiing down Lhotse (Everest's neighbour and 4th highest mountain in the world)

That opening drone shot is unreal, it almost looks like CGI.

The Devil Next Door (Netflix). Short series bout the trials of an American citizen who might have been the Nazi gas chamber operator at Treblinka. Absolutely riveting. Must watch.
