Re: The Desk Chair thread

I went and got the Ikea Markus too. Arrived yesterday. So far, it's a fine chair. I wasn't about to shell out the big bucks for a freakin chair, but I also wanted quality and comfort, and I think this chair delivers.

Re: The Desk Chair thread

Yeah, so far the only complaint I have with the Markus is that the arms are a LOT further apart than my last chair, but on the other hand the padding on the arms is A+. Just going to take a bit to get used to. I suspect I am really going to love this chair in a month or so.

Re: The Desk Chair thread

anyone got any recommendations for adjustable height desks?

I'm looking for something that is at least 60 inches long (need room for a 30in and 2x20in portrait monitors).
MCergo has some good looking stuff, but its all pretty pricey. I'd like to try to keep it around $500 if possible.

I'm enjoying the chair so far. One thing that's a bit annoying is the left arm seems to be loose and wiggles from side to side. It's not a big deal, since when I rest my arms on it, I'm pushing outwards, so the arm doesn't move. I've tried to re-screw it in, but it doesn't make any difference. Also the back of the chair moves very slightly side to side. I probably didn't screw that in tight enough. Not really an issue either.

The padding on the arms is definitely nice though.

I've noticed this too. I don't think it's related to how tight those bolts are because I took the chair apart and re-checked them, and they were as tight as could reasonably be expected. But yeah, it doesn't seem to be an issue, I figure it's some sort of designed-in give to allow the chair to flex or something, who knows. I'm not going to worry about it.

I haven't had the arms on for a long time (they don't fit under my desk), but IIRC they can be tightened well and then don't move?

As far as the back, yes it can move a little from side to side. Has no impact on use.

Anybody knows where online one can a good deal on either the Aeron or the Embody chair? I will probably go with the Aeron unless a really good Embody deal is out there.
Thanks.

Every demo chair they have is on sale, many at huge discounts. The Leap WorkLounge is normally $3400 including ottoman and they were selling it at less than half that. The Herman Miller Eames Lounge w/ ottoman is $1000 off. Definitely recommend anyone in Chicago area looking for a chair to check them out this month before they move.

I went in there intending to go for the Leap WorkLounge since it definitely looks the most comfortable and I'm pretty big on headrests. I found that it is really great as a lounge chair but for work (sitting upright) it wasn't especially comfortable -- the arm rests don't move so they only come into play when lounging/reclining. Also the head pillow was very annoying unless reclining. The seat definitely is very comfy and soft. It is a very luxurious chair and is a solid option if you do a lot of lounging but for majority working/computer use it didn't seem that great.

After sitting in 6 or so other chairs including the Leap and Freedom I settled on the Embody, of course the only chair they're not discounting since it just came out. It doesn't have a headrest but both upright and reclined positions felt like the chair was almost gripping me (a good thing) and it's also very breathable. Also cool that it was made with the environment in mind (>40% recycled materials).

Damn, I wish I had known about this sale. I got my Aeron from here awhile back and just bought an Eames Lounge (w/o a $1000 discount ).

I'm surprised -- you can buy Aerons online for a substantial discount compared to the $1,000 you paid... and local dealers are cutting nice deals too.

Contrary to what was said earlier in this thread, the Embody chair is also being heavily promoted, at least at certain dealers, and can be had for a substantial discount as well.

If you're paying MSRP for Aerons or Embody chairs, you're doing it wrong. I was quoted $947 for an Embody chair, and $644 for Aeron chairs with PostureFit, all brand new from a local dealer.

I didn't say I paid $1000 for an Aeron.

The site you linked appears to have standardized Herman Miller pricing. It doesn't look like a deal in particular. That's actually where I bought my Eames Lounge.

Ah, you're right, I apologize... I misread your post.

The site I linked to has lower prices than the "MSRP" for Aerons and Embodys... but local vendors will probably strike you a much better deal, as mine did.

Well I think that $629 price is basically going to be the same everywhere for what appears to be a pretty much non adjustable armless Aeron. I'm pretty sure that the price for new chairs is fixed by Herman Miller assuming it is an authorized dealer. I think any dealer that gives you a price cut is probably breaking their contract and you very well might be able to find such a dealer. At the same time, you can get free shipping and no tax online so it might not be worth looking for such a dealer...this is all assuming you want a new chair.

*I could be wrong.

Re: The Desk Chair thread

Pretty sure Officedesigns.com is Home Office Solutions (their address is the same) and also yeah they somehow lowered the price by $200 since I ordered mine.

Should probably call them and try to get some money back. You really got quoted at $950 for an Embody..that's pretty awesome. Is that without arms and tax? Even if it is that'd be $500 less than I paid.

I just picked the Embody up today from them. Rotating the Backfit adjustment all the way rearward (counterclockwise) makes this chair absolutely awesome. From their adjustment guide:

"With other chairs, you feel the chair push you forward if you have a curved back. Your shoulders roll forward, and your head and eyes want to drop downward. In response, you stress shoulder and neck muscles to pull your head up to align your eyes with the visual display, or you slide forward on the seat (slouch) to compensate."

I'm not sure that's accurate. We ended up getting fully adjustable w/PostureFit lumbar support chairs for the price I quoted.

As for the Embodies, my contact noted that Herman Miller is offering incentives on them since they are the "new thing"

Perhaps it matters that the company I purchased them from is an "office design" company that sells chairs and other office furniture as part of the business (but not their primary business).

They are absolutely an authorized Herman Miller dealer.

Yes, but not from them -- from a local company. That is not including tax, the full quote was:

Code:
# QTY PRODUCT DESCRIPTION SELL EXTENDED
1 1 CN122AWA
A
***** @Wk Chr Embody Std-Ht Fully Adj
            947.04

G1 @graphite

30 @rhythm-Pr Cat 2
15 +rhythm charcoal
As I mentioned in my previous post, they are authorized Herman Miller dealers, but they are an office design company that sells chairs, desks, etc. as part of their business (but not their primary business).

The purchase came from my company, I'm not sure if they sell to people walking in off of the street or not.

moki, the rhythm fabric is $200 cheaper than the balance fabric so that accounts for some of that cheapness. the place i got it from is now selling it for $200 less than i bought it for and even if yours got upgraded to the other fabric their new cheaper price would be $300 more than your quote, which is $500 less than i bought it for.

Ah, roger that -- yeah I didn't actually end up buying that chair from them. I bought it from another dealer earlier on, and paid about what you did for the higher quality fabric.

Here's the quote for the Aerons:

Code:
1 AE112NNB ***** +Wk Chr Aeron Std-Ht Pneu. Tlt Lim
            644.23

No Arms/B

G1 +graphite
BB +2 1/2 hard caster black yoke carpet
3D +pellicler classic
01 +pellicler classic carbon
NOTE FOR FIXED ARMS ADD $45.00 NET EA
NOTE FOR ADJ ARMS ADD $223.00 NET EA.
Intentionally did not want arms... they just get in the way at the poker table. Still it is loaded with full tilt controls, PostureFit, etc.

Anyway, my point is... shop around. Especially in this economy, you can probably get these higher end chairs for less than you might think.

They have decent profit margins both on the manufacturer's side and on the dealer's side, so they have room to maneuver in terms of pricing.

Mind sharing this dealer? Best price I've seen through standard searches is the $1100 start for the Embody

Re: The Desk Chair thread

just gonna add i also impulse bought the ikea markus after reading this thread and am definitely happy with its value (though ive only had it for about a week and i havent sat in any of the fancier chairs). the lumbar support, tall back, padded armrests, and head cushion are nice. easily adjustable. assembly was a little frustrating in a couple spots, but im not really that great with that sort of thing. also im not having the issue with the back moving very slightly that i think a couple others mentioned. so far its my favorite computer chair ive ever had.

I don't think they'd deliver anything out of state but...

http://www.sedgwickbusiness.com/

I do know that a Herman Miller promo on the Embody chairs ends the end of May.

I'm generally the kind of person that likes to kick back and rest my legs on my PC or whatever so my postures probably awful.

Anyway, I bought an Aeron since my old chair is falling to pieces and I couldn't resist the £185 price tag off eBay. It's probably what i'd expect for a £185 chair, paying £700 for it seems ludicrous. It's comfortable, probably helps my posture a lot, but I wouldn't call it sick OMG AMAZING or anything.

Just my 2p

There are two kinds of comfort. The first is the comfort of a soft sofa that feels nice when you first sit down... but if you spend hours sitting on the sofa, you'll end up stiff/sore.

The second kind of comfort is what chairs like the Aeron, Embody, and others offer: you'll be able to sit for hours, and still feel okay when you stand up.

It's not something you'll really notice until you spend a significant amount of time in another chair... and then you'll notice the difference.
