Is an Aeron chair a waste of money if I'm just going to slouch and not use the backrest at all?

Buying a nice chair is like buying big monitors. You play without them for a long time and don't think much of it. One day you make the purchase and realize you were crazy to have not done it sooner.

The Aeron isn't even that expensive. You can find them on Craigslist for 4-500 all the time.

OK dudes, I just went to 3 top of the line chair retailers in my area here's a TR:

1) Herman Miller Distributor. Top 3 favorites (worst to first) 3) Aeron 2) Embody 1) Celle.

The Aeron is just a very nice office chair and you can tell it was once groundbreaking. It's very comfortable but, imo, it just didn't have the top of the line feel and support that I was looking for. Like the embody, the aaron feels like more of a great "office chair" because of it's versatility but if your plan is to use it just for playing poker (instead of moving around a cubicle etc) I think there are more comfortable chairs on the market. I think the store priced them at around 700?

The embody chair seems to hug your body. It's amazing. It offers great support and if I was an architect or something I would probably end up getting this chair. I'm still going to go back and have another sit just because I think it's such a great chair but it kinda lost me in it's back height. I'm 6'1-6'2 and the top of the back came up right around my shoulder blades and it did feel a bit awkward to stop there. If it had a headrest/higher back support it might be the one I got. Retail starts ~1,100

The celle was a shot in the dark as I was just randomly sitting in chairs and this one was great. It has a great forward lean setting (which I will talk about later) that I think is very useful when playing poker. The midsection curve was a little dramatic but I think it would me the most helpful to my posture. If you want a great poker chair for cheaper I would highly recommend this one. Fully loaded for ~650.

2) Stealcase Distributor. I wasn't a big fan of the stealcase brand as a poker chair. Most of the chairs didn't seem to matchup to the herman millers, but I still did give the Steelcase leap worklounge a go. If I was an executive who could lean back with my feat on my desk all day and talk to clients this is 100% the chair I would get. It's amazingly comfortable but it's specialty is pretty much the reclining position. Like I said before, my main concern is posture and while I'm playing poker I'm usually leaning forward not back so for me, sadly, I didn't mix with this chair. It's super comfy tho. It was on sale from $3500 to 1650.

3) Healthy Back Store- 3) Humanscale freedom chair 2) Lifeform (post #219) 1) Brezza by relax the back

The Humanscale is very comfortable but barely has any adjustments you can make and I think would be most effective as a "thinking chair" rather than a "doing chair". Didn't even ask the price.

If money were absolutely no object I would get the lifeform. It has great reclining and forward positions, fantastic back support, and looks super classy. That said, it's $2,600 and after I tried the brezza I didn't find out much more about it.

The brezza chair I tried I think was semi-custom made in the store. She attached memory foam armrests (wrapped in leather), and a really comfy adjustable headrest. It has mesh backing like the aeron, but good adjustable lower back support, and the option for very firm forward tilt support. I think this is the chair I'm getting. With the upgrades it sells for $1050 which imo is quite reasonable for a chair I will be sitting in 8 hours a day.

Obviously, each chair is different for everyone. I don't have back problems but I do have poor posture. My main concern was a chair that will help my posture in my most common poker positions (Mostly, I lean forward towards the screen, so I wanted a chair with firm, forward tilt support). My secondary concern was a chair that I could grind 12 hours in and feel super fresh in. Besides the steelcase leap worklounge (being the best) I think all of the chairs I tried today would be quite comfortable to sit in for hours on end.

I hope this TR is at least somewhat helpful, I know I didn't include that great of details about each chair because honestly, after sitting in them for 15 seconds I could tell if I would be interested in them further or not. My #1 piece of advice is just to pick a day and find all the distributors in your area and just go sit in everything. The whole process took me ~3 hours.

Variance: All the sales girls that helped me out were super cute
Brag: I sat in comfy chairs all day chatting it up with hotties
Beat: They were all married

buying a nice chair if you work on a computer all day or play poker is so +ev long term, say you play 200nl and you play/sit on your computer roughly 4 hours a day for 3 years, a $700 chair will cost you less than 1 big blind a day, if you plan on keeping this chair or the "job" for a longer time then its even cheaper, these types of things pay for themsevles and im a huge believer in quality stuff if your using it a lot.

Where can I go to try all of the above mentioned chairs? I've been to all the basic staples, walmart, costco and they seem to only carry items that cater to the unballer population. Please list some big name chain stores that at least have some chance of being in my area (sacramento) so i can try them out in person. thankssssssssssss

Well I went to a relax the back store and bought the Brezza for $950 out the door including headrest and covering the back and headrest with dreamweave cloth. I liked the Brezza over the freedom and aeron/mira because its the one you can adjust the most out of all of them.

My old chair's backrest would be pretty far back and i would have to lean back to get back support. with the brezza you can adjust the back to move forward if you want to sit more upright (this was huge).

The aeron was comfortable but had no headrest which was something i must have for my next chair. samething mira.

freedom I found wasn't that adjust at all and only tries to bend/flex with your body.

Just bought an Aeron-

For those of you that have one, what is the best way to adjust the lumbar support? How high on the back is it supposed to be?

Thanks,
Justin

Relax the Back store has an ergonomist evaluate everything they sell (so they told me, anyway). I went there to try the Freedom and Embody out, unfortunately they don't carry herman miller.

They did have the Humanscale Freedom at relax the back and I thought it was terrible. Especially after sitting in the LifeForm which has about 4 inches of memory foam, headrest, and lumbar support.

I have had the Steelcase Leap for a couple months now and it's just not doing the job. Time to get ANOTHER chair. Besides, my cats scratched the **** out of it.

Went to the Home & Office Solutions to "try" one of these out & knew right away I was going to be an owner. Lots o' fpp's but well worth it imo. My back is feeling better already.

The Herman Miller Envelop Reclining Desk looks pretty sick:

Quote:
The sister product to the amazing Herman Miller Embody chair, the Envelop desk actually slides out and down on rails to give you the correct angle for working while in incline. It's amazing.

Pricey though, $1,100.

Meh, I'm going to go check out an Embody tomorrow thru an ad on Craigslist. It's only 700 since the guy's business failed. The Leap is killing my back.

This is the same reason I went to replace my old chair. I wanted to get something easier on my lower back & that I could play longer sessions on more comfortably w/out getting aches/pains.
I sat in about 10 different ones including the Embody, Mirra, Freedom, but I far preferred the Aeron. I thought the Aeron had a better reclined position, and it had an option for a different type of lower back support (you can see it in the picture) that felt good for me. I also got the leather arms & the wheels that don't scratch the floor. The only other option was to get the thing chromed out, which I thought was a little much. I agree it's good to try them out & it's definitely a feel / everyone's different sort of thing. Even when I decided on this model I was stuck between 2 sizes and it was tough choosing.

Here's where I got it.

I got the Embody 4-5 days ago. GOD I love this. It absolutely blows away the Aeron, Freedom, and Leap. I can grind on this thing for 9 hours and feel perfect. I think I'm in love. Brag: I only paid $700 for it. It's basically brand new. The guy bought a bunch of Herman Miller office stuff (sick cubicles, 4 chairs, etc) and he went out of business in 2 months.

What's the consensus on humanscale freedom's?

Considering picking up one off eBay, minus the headrest, but there isn't a stockist near me so can't sit in one before I purchase.

Have sat in cheap office chairs from Staples etc all my life where after sitting in the same chair for 8+ hours a day the padding goes to ****, which is my main reason for looking for a new one. Any ergonomic benefits are a bonus.

I don't like mine. I'm a chair fish

The padding is extremely durable. I dunno how many hours I've put in it, but I can't notice a single shred of difference.
