Just getting the ball rolling here. Desk chairs are often discussed throughout the forum, so why not a central topic for it?

Good thread idea, I'm looking for a new chair, though I wish I had thought to get one last month (so I could get the deduction for 2008).

Also, I'd be interested in ergonomic seat/back cushions.

I have the Ikea Markus myself, and it's really terrific, esp for larger persons like yourself.

I have a Herman Miller Aeron and love it, takes a while to get it super dialed in but once you do, its fantastic.

I've been planning on getting the Freedom at some point I just keep putting it off.

Steelcase Leap (Worklounge) is also highly recommended I believe.

I have a Freedom and don't really like it, its "okay". I'd be willing to trade with someone who feels identically about their other desk chair.

Have the Freedom and I love it. Used to get a little stiff grinding, but since I got it--and a vertical mouse--I've had no problems.

Looks like a knock off Aeron.

Agree. Best thing about it is you simply don't feel it. Wish I could take it with me to the casino.

I think the Embody looks pretty sick, has anyone tried it?

Good advice: Sit in a chair for an hour before buying it.
I bought an Aeron because I could get a great deal on it and to be honest I'm not very happy with it. The adjustability is excellent though

yeah i'd never order one online that i hadn't sat in so here's my question: where do i go to try out high end chairs?

I tried out all the high end chairs at Design Within Reach

I actually ended up buying my chair there too because it wasn't much more expensive than online stores I was looking at at the time, plus the sales people were f'ing super. I think there was another high-end chain design store like DWR that was recommended to me if I couldn't get to a DWR, but I forget what it was.

Yeah, this is a real bummer. The Ikea Markus looks pretty sweet on a per dollar basis, but the nearest Ikea is like 500 miles from me.

With the Freedom chair, is there a big difference between a chair without a headrest and one with it?

I think I sat in both while trying chairs out and I would have gone without a headrest because it didn't seem to make a difference. Obviously somebody with a freedom without a headrest might be able to give you a better opinion, but I mean...most office chairs don't have headrests, soo...

Man, I would probably fall asleep in my chair a lot more than I already do if it had a headrest.

take a look at the Steelcase Leap chair.

i have both an aeron and leap chair and the leap is MUCH more comfortable than the aeron IMO.

I saw an article (in wired?) about the embody... it looks pretty baller.

my two big complaints about the aeron are lack of support through the seat & back (mesh ftw), and armrests that don't stay at the height you set them at.

if you get an aeron, get the posturefit for it (lower back support)... it's very good.

MW,

I barely notice the headrest, how often do you use the headrest in your car? That would be the best comp IMO.

Most people sit more correctly in their desk chairs than in a car seat, gotta have that gangsta lean amirite or something.

Iunno. I rarely have my upper back in contact with either my car seat or my desk chair and don't think I'd ever use the headrest in either for anything other than something to smash my head into.

Then again I could probably get away with a stool 90% of the time.

I bought the La Z Boy Office Chair. The recline mechanism adjusts the angle of both seat and back. Also, the solid sides are nice if you like to rotate through sitting positions during a long day.
