For clarification, it's called "Vasco De Gama" and it has "Corona" written on the bottom.

Edit: http://www.wesleys.co.za/VascodaGama.htm

It's the 3rd one down (picture wise) Corona and I believe it is the Claro Sumatra wrapper?

These are short filler cigars from the German manufacturer Arnold André – excellent quality, 100% pure tobacco and beautifully packed. The filler
in each case is a carefully selected
blend of several tobaccos from the former Dutch East Indies and Brazil.

But are they any good? I'm mainly thinking about the "Cigar Oasis XL Plus", it uses distilled water only (so I won't need to replace cartridges or anything, just refill water once every 6 months or so).
I'm planning to buy a new humidor, but not bigger than 100-150 capacity. Will the Oasis XL Plus work well in such a small humidor (says it is designed for cabinets etc)?

I'm also receptive to other ideas for humidification, but something that needs refilling every two weeks would probably not be the thing for me...
I just got a humidor, and got the Oasis XL (reg, not plus). Supposedly the only difference is it is battery powered and has a smaller cartridge. It is all I've used, but I imagine it is a lot simpler than other methods. Only takes 12-24hrs and it automatically cures the humidor, then you don't have to touch it for 6 months. Also has a supposedly very reliable built in hydrometer.

Oh, and I'm using it in a 50 cigar humidor, which is the minimum it recommends it for. I assume it might be a bit of overkill, but the ease of use is nice, and I'll be able to use it if I ever upgrade to a larger humidor.

Monte #2 is the torpedo. The Especial #2 is called a parejo.

I live in Buenos Aires now, and it appears that I've walked past a cigar bar a few times close to my place.

I'm not an expert -- I have a friend who was a bit of a budding connoisseur, and used to give me good cigars. We'd spoke them together and talk about them, but this was 2 years ago now, so I don't really remember much. What I do remember is that I liked stronger, darker cigars.

So, since I'm in a country where Cubans are legal (or I assume so), does anyone have any cigars that I should go check out? The place looks cool and I'd like to have an experience I can't have in the US.

I apologize in advance -- I haven't read the thread, as I figure it would go over my head. I don't think price is an issue -- it's Argentina, so I assume they'll be cheap, and as I recall a single cigar was rarely over $20 in the US.

See if there's an LCDH which will be an official distributor for Habanos in that country. I think you can Google it to find locations. That's the best way to know it's a legit Cuban.

Most all Cubans except the new Cohiba Maduros don't have very dark wrappers. That being said, a stronger cigar that smokes well young would be a Partagas Series D #4. The current production Monte #2's are also good. If they have a San Cristobal Oficios buy it. A little smaller but excellent as a young cigar. Last choice for a current production are the Cohiba Siglo Series. The #3's are also very good young. When in doubt, ask what's good and what has a little age. There's many others but those are somewhat more common.

Hope this helps.

My brother is going to Cuba next week and i want him to pick me up some cigars. Does anybody know roughly how much a box of genuine mid/high level cohiba's or montecristo's would cost down there, and how hard is it to avoid getting sold fakes?

(FWIW, i don't live in an embargo country, just one that has very high tobacco tax)

The list is a little bit off on the net. Be sure to freeze them. Buy from an official habano store and you should be fine.

Thanks for the link, but why freeze them? Can't i just put them in the humidor when he gets back?

tobacco beetles are common in cuba and if you dont freeze them all of your cigars are at risk.
I got some cigars a couple of weeks ago straight from cuba and they had beetle holes. The european distributor freeze the cigars too.

Just how "out there" are some of the Acid Cigars? The tea infused one sounds pretty interesting to me if the flavor is well incorporated. Naturally I fear it will be along the lines of the artificial vanillas or strawberries or whatever from gas stations.

What experiences have any of you had with them?
06-08-2008 , 09:24 AM
I've never tried one as I don't like flavored cigars, but I know people who have, and the either love them or hate them. It's not a crappy gas station cigar that's for sure, and I've known people who don't particularly like flavored sticks like the Acid line.

I think it's something you'd have to try for yourself
06-08-2008 , 05:07 PM
never tried a flavored cigar but there is one called java that gets good reviews.

I recently had an amaretto flavored Helix. Was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It's an interesting change of pace and I doubt I'll smoke more than a handful in my lifetime, but it's worth trying just to experience it.

I haven't see much discussion about drinks that best go with cigars.

I know most people go with bourbon, scotch, or even espresso, but I accidentally used Hawaiian Punch last night to go with a strong cigar and it was pretty awesome.

i don't think i'd like a fruity drink, but a lot of people drink soda with cigars. The sugar can help keep the buzz from getting out of hand if the cigar is really strong.

I like Dr Pepper sometimes when i smoke

Has anyone tried the Rocky Patel 1999 vintage Connecticut?

I bought one last night for the 4th and was too drunk to remember to smoke it, going to enjoy it tonight I think.

caipirinha w/ ttt trinidad is one of my fav. combos.

I smoked a Ghurka for the first time yesterday. Unimpressed is all I have to say. I'm not sure what all the buzz is about.

I put it out halfway and lit a $1 bundle cigar that I enjoyed much more.

The only RP I've ever smoked was an Edge and I remember enjoying it.
