I've been reading Shantaram the past couple of days and was trying to think what I'd read before that reminded me of it... And here we are. (Except Adsman spends less time trying to be profound or explaining how he's a nice guy now but didn't used to be, and how also he could beat you up if he wanted).

I believe in this part you are referring to islands off Nanaimo?

What other places in your travels (or anyone else for that matter) are places that are absolute MUST SEE in this world?

Good luck in that hell hole.

Writing is going well, over the 50,000 word mark now and moving steadily along.

Messiahkid, yes, they were the islands off Nanaimo. Other must see places? The terraced volcanic crater lakes in the south west corner of Uganda, and Venice in April.

I can't believe it's taken till today for me to even notice this thread and I couldn't stop reading until you stopped the story. Like others have said very well done and can't wait for the book. Maybe this will be the thing to light the fire I need.

i am amazed by your ability to like different places. In Uganda if you hit someone with a car a mob will instantly kill you, but you still recommend traveling the area. I know myself, and probably most of the people reading this wouldn't have lasted a week there living the way you did.

Snap buying this book when it comes out and also letting others know about it...read this thread about 1.5 years ago but not reading it again until the book comes out but I remember being glued to the monitor reading at work.

Read all 38 pages of this thread the last couple of days. The first 15 pages (the ops stories) were unbelievable. The last 23 of "great read, want 10 autographed copies of your book", meh.

Hope the book is coming along well. Your thread was a great read, op. I want 10 autographed copies of your book.

Unbelievably sick thread. My buddy sent me a link and told me I wouldn't be able to stop reading...finished reading the whole thing within the day. Great writing! adsman, have you ever read A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah? It's an amazing book and parts of your story while you were in Uganda reminded me a lot of the book. You should look into it if you ever have time, I really think you'd enjoy it!

Also, I'd always considered up and moving to a new place a lot like you had done when you had originally moved to Sydney. Ironically, Australia and Italy are my top choices (Australia because I've had friends tell me how amazing it was when they lived in Surfer's Paradise and because of how friendly and laid back Australians are in general...and Italy because my family grew up in Italy before I was born and many friends of mine had great experiences while studying abroad there). Do you have any suggestions on starting a backpacking adventure to either place? Backpacking friendly cities to start at? Finding hostels or more long-term means of housing? Searching for jobs? I'm currently about to finish college and have been bartending for awhile, playing poker, and having lots of fun. I'm an accounting major...after one tax internship, the last thing I'm looking forward to is spending more time in a soul-killing cubicle - just wasn't for me despite the pay. I would love and appreciate any advice you can give. Can't wait to get the book good luck!

adsman,

Great story. Thank you for sharing this.

I just went rafting down N. Yuba in California. There was 1 class 5 (Maytag) and several class 4s. Was really fun and we have a good team that want to do something a little more difficult. Any recommendations within a reasonable distance (say Costa Rica, Oregon, etc).

THank you.
