Rich: Agreed, I really like it too. Also recently posted about Mocha Merlin from Firestone Walker, really enjoyed that. But for easily obtainable, reasonably priced stuff, Founders Breakfast Stout is my current favorite.

Founders fans: Speaking of Founders, Mikkeller Bar is having a CBS release event. I've had KBS, but never CBS.
Quote:
Founders CBS KBS NITRO BREAKFAST a flight of Founders CBS, Founders KBS, the rarely seen Nitro Breakfast Stout and a full mug of Breakfast Stout. You will also be able to take with you your founders handle bowl/mug.
Would you do that for $42?

Considering your location I’d probably do it as it’s going to be super rare getting all those at the same time on tap. Assuming the flight is 4oz pours Its probably a bit Steep but I’d expect to pay a premium if someone brought 3 rare beers to Michigan from California.

Hoagie,

Probably true. A bit annoying given I have Breakfast Stout and KBS at home, so I'm really paying to try CBS and the Nitro Breakfast Stout.

I'll prob just go there later in the day and hope they have some left to just buy at the bar.

Meh tough call. On a strict pricing basis for a bar, it’s not horrible.

Around me I’d expect to pay $6 for a 5 oz pour of KBS, maybe $7-8 for CBS, $4 for the nitro BS and $7 for the pint. So call it $28 or so after tip and you get to keep the glass for this. Not terrible.

The thing is all those beers are very readily available except CBS now. Nitro breakfast stout is prob barely discernible from regular.

From Mikkeller SF's Facebook page:

Quote:
Three 6 oz pours of CBS, KBS, Nitro Bfast and a 12oz pour of breakfast in a special breakfast mug you can take home.
So, 30oz of beer at a weighted average of ~9.5%, at 10:30am on a Saturday? I must be old because that (and not the $42) makes it a pass for me. I'll probably do your plan and see what they have later in the day.

They're getting you to spend a lot of money for CBS there, obviously. It's kind of a question of how bad you want CBS. I think I could potentially do it.

I'm unsure of course how distributed CBS is going to be, and if it'll be as good in this iteration as it's been talked up over the years.

I don’t think CBS is noticeably better than the best speedway variants. It’s certainly overrated for its rarity and hype (true of nearly all beers like it)

That said I’m big on at least trying things myself so I’d likely do it.

Should be able to get CBS. If anyone wants it, let me know. Willing to trade for whatever I can't here in MI

Goofy,

6oz pours, nice. Ok maybe I’ll do it. Tennis from 8-930, go home and shower, perfect timing for some stouts at mikkeller! Seriously, with current weather a few stouts and brunch starting at 1030 sounds great.

Speaking of stouts, this tasteoff is tempting, but I’ll prob pass because I need to drink some stouts I already have and clear out some space for some 2017 BCS (and maybe some other new finds):

Prairie doesn't distribute to Wisconsin and that really annoys me because I love everything they do from their sours to their farmhouse to their stouts.

The whole Bomb series is incredible to me. I think Bomb is one of the great non-BA beers, even today.

Spivey,

Love bomb, and I’ve now had regular, Christmas, birthday, pirate, and barrel aged.

All delicious, but I think I may like regular best out of the bunch.

Ive had a couple NE IPAS from Revision Brewing recently since they seem to be popping up in the Bay Area. Not sure if this is new, or I just never noticed.

Disco Ninja I thought was very good but doesn't really stand out

Tahoe Haze I thought was awesome, and will be trying to pick up more of this.

saw breakfast stout at the store but ended up looking at and buying other stuff and forgot to pick up a 4pk. d'oh.

I like the bomb series, maybe the regular stands out the best to me (compared to other similar beers), but it's pretty pricey per oz for what you get.

Prarie is distro'd here including some farmhouse and hoppy stuff in cans but I don't buy due to the price.

Their stuff is not cheap, for sure.

I do think that Bomb is better than a whole bunch of brewerie's anniversary/special release beers. Like, I take Bomb 100 times out of 100 over Abraxas, and they're pretty similar in style. There's a bunch of breweries doing that, although more are moving towards even more cinnamon/pastry stout style, but I think it still really stands up.

Of course, I don't mind buying it when I can because Wisconsin is one of the few states they don't distribute to.

Bomb is great and while it’s expensive it’s nice to have a great beer that’s not limited. I feel the same way about big bad baptist. While I kind of like hunting down hard to find stuff, it’s nice to be able to pop into the store and get something legit any day of the week.

I found this review to be absurd:

Quote:
12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/21/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear dark ruby red/light brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, apricot, apple, anise, pepper, clove, light banana/bubblegum, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, anise, and dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of huge raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, apricot, apple, anise, pepper, clove, light banana/bubblegum, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruit, cherry, apricot, apple, anise, pepper, clove, light banana/bubblegum, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, anise, and dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitter/spiciness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, lightly sticky/chalky, and slightly slick/syrupy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is fairly well hidden; a small pleasant warmth lingers after the finish, with no booziness. Overall this is an outstanding Belgian strong dark ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, anise, and dark/bready malt sweetness; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Extremely rich, complex, and well balanced between yeast/malt flavors. Superb style execution all around. A highly enjoyable offering.
They can't be serious, can they? Especially when they list the flavors: "Taste of huge raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, apricot, apple, anise, pepper, clove, light banana/bubblegum, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. I agree it's absurd, there was obviously a bit of pumpernickel on the finish as well.

BCS fans,

Who's waiting in line this year?

This is the City Beer Store in SF event:

Black Friday 2017 Goose Island
Bourbon County Stout Release

Black Friday 2017, November 24, Doors open at 9am....
Goose Island's Bourbon County Stout collection arrives Black Friday with the most variants ever released from the company. Join us early for a cup of coffee, donuts, and bottles to go. Stay for the wide variety of Goose Island beers pouring on draft. Plan on these bottles available for purchase:

-Bourbon County Brand Stout
-Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout
-Bourbon County Brand Barleywine
-Bourbon County Brand Northwoods Stout
-Bourbon County Reserve Brand Stout (bottles will be extremely limited)
I really want the coffee and northwoods, but I'll likely do what I do every year and just go in the afternoon hoping they have some bottles of regular left and the variants left on draft.

I might wait in line a couple of places (Chicago area) because I am an idiot... idk. I severely dislike waiting in line, yet I always do! Self loathing ftw. The beer helps.

ETA: didn't try most variants, but the Northwoods was a bit almondy for me the first go round, almost cloyingly so. These adjuncts can smooth out over time though(?). I barely got any blueberry other than a general sweetness. Prob gonna try the rest tonight, and definitely Friday. Prop sounds good!

Downtown,

When do these start showing up in Chicago?

Interesting re: the northwoods. If I miss out, I’ll focus on that not sounding nearly as good as the great fruit flavor I loved in cherry rye, backyard rye, etc.

And I prob won’t get to taste prop til February beer week here regardless...

my packy is getting 12 bottles of coffee, which is pretty great since I didn't think MA was getting anything besides standard and barleywine. They're doing a raffle for them which I think is fair. You can enter between 9-12, drawing at 12. Unfortunately you need to be present to purchase at the time of the drawing, otherwise I would maybe enter at 9. Won't be around at noon.

Fremont's bbomb and skookum's breakfast stout come out on the same day so I'll probably go get one or both of those local beers instead of BCBS. Maybe pick up one bottle at the grocery store like I did last year.

"stonefruit, balanced more towards phenols than esters but both are there, a broad malty base with some deeper malt flavors" is probably more how I'd generally put it.
