I think (and this is just conjecture maybe combined with projection on my part) what is frustrating to Koch is that the flagship that has built his life is so looked down on by the most vocal of minorities.
It still screams out of touch or unrealistic to me though. The most vocal people of those minorities aren't looking for Boston Lager. I personally enjoy that beer, and many of my friends do as well, but it's pretty hard to take a lager, mass produce and sell it at every Red Lobster, TGI Fridays and Applebees in a frozen mug and expect some specialty beer bar to carry it. They don't carry many standard lagers at those types of places anyways.

He has hipster beers. He has beers for the niches (as you correctly corrected me on), but wanting his most popular and mass produced beer to also be demanded by the niche niches, that seems unrealistic to me, if that's what he meant.

People call Coors **** (it is crap too), but are happy to buy their sours. I don't think people call Boston Lager crap, even if the people buying Utopius or their other special beers aren't buying Boston Lager. I'm not sure Koch should want anything more.

RE aging beers, myself and many others in our homebrew club enjoyed hearing this author speak and we bought his book. I'd recommend taking a look at this if you're interested in aging beer - http://www.amazon.com/Vintage-Beer-T...dp/161212156X/

Goofy, just buy a big, working fridge and then buy a temperature controller for it. The latter can be had for around $50 (you can make one far cheaper if you want to spend the time and can follow basic instructions). Stuff labeled "wine fridge" or (less often) "beer fridge" is going to cost a lot more money automatically and won't give you the same space for price.

All you cantillon drinkers itt....I've never had mamouche. How do you guys like it compared to other mid tier stuff? (i.e. vig, st lam, LPs, fou)

Wait, people drink Cantillon?

I thought you were just supposed to buy it, then just stare it in your basement while you imagine that someday you'll drink it. I'm probably doing it wrong.

Mamouche is my least favorite by a large amount. It is too peppery and floral and I especially don't like the bitterness or herbal spice quality to it.

Yea the whole elderflower thing just doesn't appeal to me.....I guess I should try one eventually though.

Haha, nice.

Side note for Chicago people: why has nobody ever mentioned Finch's? They apparently make good beers. That double IPA is juicy.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Finch's. Their target market generally has been aimed at Bros that are getting away from bud light and the like. Their advantage is that they were able to get a massive facility and allow for contract brewing. They are really low on the totem pole of what I would drink at a bar and for Chicago/IL beer in general.

To me is just comes down to your flavor preference. My favorite of all I think is the Lou Pepe Framboise but that's just a raspberry thing for me. Mamouche I thought was cool but do prefer other fruited flavors over it.

Grapefruit Sculpin finally hit Atlanta today. I was shocked when I realized that the bottles were only 11 days old. I threw one on ice for twenty minutes. The grapefruit was very strong on the nose and was equally strong on the palate. Slightly unbalanced and too citrusy right off the ice, but as it warmed up over 10-15 minutes the grapefruit, hops and malt were all in harmony. This was really great.

Sixpoint just started distributing to my area. Resin was my first purchase and it is wonderful. Looking forward to trying out the rest of their lineup.

Funny you should post this. I can get six point beers everywhere. Resin is pretty good. Yesterday I was so excited to get my hands on Hi-Res IIPA. Sadly, I found it to be way too malty and syrupy. I have 3 left, maybe my opinion will change...I was really looking forward to this beer.

I've heard that same complaint about hi-res, that is too sweet/syrupy. We have a poor selection in our city so it was a big deal to get Sixpoint. We do have Prairie, but that is because they are HQ'd an hour away.
