Had Tequilacerbus from Avery last night.

Sour aged in tequila barrels. Really tasty and tart. I didn't get much of the tequila taste until it warmed up a little but my gf said it tasted like a shot of tequila to her.

I really enjoyed it, she did not.

Had my first ever offering from Tired Hands Brewing in PA. Been wanting to try something from them for awhile and I had their “Am I Okay”. It was solidly okay. Single IPA with lactose. Maybe I was expecting more since the brewery near my office brews the single greatest lactose added ipa (imho)- Ice Cream Man from Back east.

“Lowest key” ones prob Arts and Crafts and One Mile House. I’ve seen em packed out but I’d think you’d be ok for a Sunday day drinking.

As Is and the Jeffrey are my personal favs though they both can get a bit of an elitist beer snob vibe. Not nearly as bad as blind tiger or torst though.
These are good suggestions. The last time I went to Rattle n Hum, though, while they had a great beer list the place was absolutely overrun with college aged kids. So it can have a college-bar-with-good-beer vibe, as opposed to a "craft beer place' vibe.

Also the last time I was through NY we dropped by two separate locations of Milk and Hops and they had terrific beer and nice cheese plates. But those aren't really destination places to hang out, they're small and not lively. But if you're passing through, say, Chelsea and want to stop for a beer then I highly recommend.

I've been to a Milk & Hops on the upper east side near my buddy's place. Will concur with your review. Nice list and fine time but sort of a sanitary/blah environment as far as a bar goes.

MA bros... lamplighter distro is getting pretty good, I've had the chance to sample a few. They seem to do hoppy stuff well. Quite fresh Lawyers, Guns, & Honey (IPA brewed with honey, citra, and amarillo) was quite good, and Rabbit Rabbit (DIPA w/ citra, amarillo, and idaho 7) is really, really good. I'll have to go check out the tap room soon.

So many shelf options these days making lines less appealing.

Founders DKML is delicious. Super smooth, and you wouldn't think its ABV is as high as it is.

yeah what I can get on the shelf is so good. I haven't even been to Trillium in a couple months and that requires no line at all. of course now that it's Kiwi Rising season that'll be my goto for the next 6 weeks or so.

what I'm looking for are good canned stouts. I had Modern Times Black House Coffee Stout which I liked but I even like my stouts to be hoppier. Oatmeal stout isn't my favorite style

I actually am not digging the Kiwi Rising this year. Not bad, just kinda blah.

I have been loving the post shift pils, though.

I was underwhelmed by them when they first opened, but I have been pretty pleased across the board. I really like the werewolves of cambridge porter and agree with kc's take on the hoppy stuff. Their tap room is fun. It gets real packed on friday/saturday night because of the location, but I like it a lot for drinks after work during the week. Its probably my 3rd most visited taproom after night shift and idle hands. i'll have to see what happens after down the road opens up in a couple of weeks.

If anyone wants to buy up to 6 bottles of Black Tuesday for shipping within CA or pickup in Orange County (by 12/31) or Washington DC (by 1/31), today's the day!

Had Lord Hobo Glorious on draft the other day, is that fairly representative of the NE IPA style? I'm still having trouble understanding it but obviously haven't had a chance to try the benchmarks.

NE IPA fans,

Is it supposed to stand for Northeast or New England? I've seen both recently.

Tell that to Tired Hands, Kneel.

It is New England though.

i was really drunk when i had it at a share, but no IMO. Its from NE and may say it on the can, but its a weak representation of the style.

Beer review: got a shipment from Offshoot Beer Co. yesterday, The Bruery's IPA brand

Shaken is a "cream IPA", with peaches, vanilla, and lactose along with Citra, Amarillo, and Huell Melon hops. It's pretty good; at first I wanted the fruit and creaminess to hit my tongue a little harder, but as I got used to it the balance felt more appropriate. gf really liked this one.

Stirred is a 100% Mosaic hazy double IPA. It is quite delicious, bursting with orange citrusy juicy hoppy goodness. Super dig this beer.

Thanks everyone. As far as midtown was concerned I wound up at District Tap House, Rattle & Hum and the Ginger Man. All good lists (and what I liked about NYC was that all of the bars had very different lists rather than all having 80% of the same core beers and only a bit of variation). Ginger Man had the best list, I reckon, but DTH was definitely the best place to watch the games.

In the Ginger Man I met a guy who distributes in much of Manhattan for a number of decent breweries. My list for next time is therefore the Pony Bar (he didn't mention anything about it being closed, and distributes to it, so I assume that's incorrect), As Is, and the Jeffrey. And one day I might get to Blind Tiger / Torst / Proleteriat.

IPA fans,

Stone tangerine express ipa

Good stuff! Pretty simple flavor profile, very easy drinking. Lot of orange flavor, not so sure about the pineapple. I guess I get some if I think about it. Not very hoppy, just enough to be tasty. Very well-balanced beer.

$10.99/6.

So there were 2 Pony Bars owned by the same people- one in Hells Kitchen and one Upper East Side. The owners split and the one in HK is no longer Pony Bar. The UES location is still Pony Bar. It's still good

That makes sense. And the UES side one is the one on the Untappd founders' list too.

I've seen it both ways, but New England is the most common I believe. Vermont style is another, but HF and Vermont have been somewhat aggressive in putting the kibosh on that.

I think a better name for these types of beers would be juicy IPAs. That's the biggest difference to the avg person that drinks these, the hops are juicy and flavorful and not bitter. Plenty of other differences, but I bet 95% of the masses that are drinking this style beer are going to see that as the clearest separation compared to a west coast IPA.

Anyone have SF recs for breweries, beer bars and liquor stores? My good friend is there Wed-Sun and I told him I would get him some good places to go. He likes just about everything, big beers, aged beer, sour/wild, ipas. He'll likely go to anchor to have a fresh anchor steam too.

Are there any NE style IPAs that are easy to find in Los Angeles?
The Beer connoisseur thread Quote

Chicago,

Beer bars: city beer store, zeitgeist, toronado, mikkeller, liquid gold are some I really like. Lots of other really good ones.

Breweries: cellarmaker and almanac my two favorite in the city. 21st amendment and harmonic are solid. In Berkeley, fieldwork and rare barrel are awesome.

Liquor stores: k&l and cask. CBS listed above is both bar and beer store.

Not on grocery store shelves, you'll likely have to go to the brewery/releases for the good stuff (monkish, Mumford, green cheek, etc.)
