Goofy,

I love coconut flavor in general and in beers.

Hey all. Couple of days in NYC tagged on the end of a business trip soon. It's been a while. Any tips for bars other than the usual Blind Tiger, Tørst, Proletariat? Staying in midtown so slight preference for there.

Flying solo on this one so particularly keen to hear of anywhere that might work for quieter drinking on a Sunday afternoon/night rather than a huge night out.

Thunder,

I'm sure you'll get some great recs from NYC folks in this thread, but I was there not long ago and really enjoyed beers at Clinton hall and the growler. Both are downtown/financial district. I especially liked the growler, which had a quieter vibe when I was there.

Thanks El D. I didn't know either of those.

Bars in Manhattan that always have very good tap lists

As Is (50th/10th)
The Jeffrey (59th/2nd)
Fool’s Gold (LES)
One Mile House (LES)
Rattle n Hum (39th/8th)
Ginger Man (midtown east)
Arts and Crafts (west village)

“Lowest key” ones prob Arts and Crafts and One Mile House. I’ve seen em packed out but I’d think you’d be ok for a Sunday day drinking.

As Is and the Jeffrey are my personal favs though they both can get a bit of an elitist beer snob vibe. Not nearly as bad as blind tiger or torst though.

A friend once suggested that people have different strengths of detecting flavors, so what I meant is that maybe you find it overwhelming (or artificial-y as you described) at levels that my pleb taste buds would think is good? Just a theory.

General thread brag: just got La Fin du Monde on tap at work. Who needs craft beer bars?

I like coconut but am very hesitant to try and get beers with them because I feel like half of them have this weird metallic artificial flavor. Even ones that get good reviews. So, stick me in the Diablo camp.

Goofy: true, the most likely explanation is I have much more elite and refined taste and taste buds than a novice beer drinker like you.

Mullen/thunder: I love the Gingerman in NYC (and the original in Houston!)

I find coconut often translates to a sunscreen/metallic taste. Rarely works for me

Wow I've been to Ginger man on 36th in nyc and in Austin without realizing they were related.

Was going to name pony bar as another good craft beer spot with reasonable drunk pizza next door but it seems they closed in an ownership split.

Oak Brux is good, and super funky. Had a taste straight from the foeder a few months ago before they bottled it. Didn't get a notice about this lottery for some reason. Kiwi is always a favorite. Hopefully this year's isn't enamel peeling sour like last year.

I thought you guys were joking about coconut. After reading this thread awhile I've realized I'm more of a drunk than a connoisseur.

Went to As Is only once during my time in the city and absolutely love it. I actually modeled some of my bar based on things we liked from it. The Jeffrey was probably the bar I went to the most, partly based on location, but also because despite having a solid beer selection they also have TVs for sporting events. Not many of the better beer bars in NYC are great for watching games (Rattle N Hum and Gingerman excepted).

Uncommon Crow is indeed a good beer.

As Is is great, as mentioned above, though in late afternoon/early evening the sun blaring in is blinding.

If you're forced to be near Penn Station, District Tap House on 38th between 7th and 8th usually has a good list. I was there on Thursday and they had several Grimm lines along with Equilibrium.

Out of curiosity what does a pint of a standard IPA cost in manhattan? 2 hearted, fresh squeezed, something similar.

$7-8 average I’d say.

+1 As Is
Stopped by this past weekend, great spot.

Get out to Other Half if you have a chance, great IPAs... many many DDH options, seemed like all their best stuff was on. I was under the influence, but I think the DDH All Green Everything was up there among my favorite IPAs ever. Also this place wins the award for the most young attractive people at a brewery at one time, including a lot of women... very odd. I asked the bartender where all the fat guys with beards were. I felt uncomfortable and went and got a pizza. (Juliana's, also very good!)

Huh that's pretty reasonable. I expected $10ish.

Two Hearted is a happy hour beer at the bars I mentioned, to be fair. The “good stuff” like Other Half is more like $10 a pint (usually sold as $8 for 12 oz)

They release different variants of this stuff pretty often. Some harder to find than others. Worth a look if you like the original

DM is OK for what it is, but way too thin imo. variants are good sometimes, with S'mores being my favorite from recent memory.

Had a coworker bring me a sixer of Spotted Cow. Really enjoy this beer for what it is. If I had access to it I would buy it often.
