googled to see what the TV was and came across this. no clue if Joes AV is legit or not, but seems to be at a quick glance. $1743 with free shipping and no tax. Anyone ever ordered from there before?

A lot of those places ARE NOT legit... they are bait and switch or outright fraudulent websites.

The only way to know for sure if you're getting a fair deal is to track and shop several reputable resellers. That's why I try and speak in terms of a range instead of the "lowest" price.

Also, if you use a bank card like Citibank you can potentially get additional dollars off the purchase price by submitting a price match guarantee. Most credit cards that have price matching will match up to $500... I got my c7/65 for 2250$ Ltd, I submitted a claim using an online lowball website for an additional -500$ for a total of 1750$ for a brand new 65" OLED.

Just picked up the LG 65 B7A OLED on black Friday. It's awesome!

Guys - my parents are getting a new TV (finally). They have a decent sized living room and watch "lengthways", so they're 12' to 14' from the TV (they have carpet and it's impractical to rearrange the furniture - I've tried).

They'll use the TV quite a lot to watch stuff like The Crown and I think they'll get good use out of the catalogue on Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. So I was thinking of getting them some sort of Soundbar, Soundbase etc. They're not massive cinephiles/audiophiles, but I think this would be worth it? Let me know if it wouldn't.

Would you recommend me something from Amazon UK to buy? The most important thing is that after I set up the speaker, it's effectively integrated with the TV so when my parents turn the TV on the audio automatically comes from the speaker. Ideally they'd change the volume on the speaker in the same manner and using the same remote as if they were using the native audio from the TV.

A couple of options I saw:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Soundbar-Ta...76%3A419158031

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-S...ords=soundbase

Anything involving mounting multiple speakers it out. It has to be pretty simple. Thanks a lot!!

Do you have a price point in mind? Also, you seem to be looking at wireless solutions so your monitor must support that option. Preference is for wired because it's a more direct connection that doesn't require additional "stuff" (like wifi) to work.

My price point is like £100 or less. I know that's on the cheaper side but I don't think my parents are the type to get much more from a £500 speaker than a £100.

Re. wired, I just chose a couple of items that were cheap & had good reviews. Going for wired might be better because there's less chance of things going wrong if the Wi-Fi went down for a bit. But having a wireless option would also be useful.

Edit: items from here would fit what I'm looking for (<£125, Prime, 4*+). I do have a preference towards going for to cheaper end. In particular they're unlikely to watch much which would require lots of bass. So something like

this

or

this would be great, assuming they do the job.

Just have them get a TV with quality built in speakers already. A cheap soundbar is not going to be as good as the new built in speakers.

Yeah... it is a compromise...

Thanks guys. How do I tell how good the native audio is? The Amazon reviews are generally positive about the sound but I couldn't find a tech review of this specific TV.

This is what they are currently planning to get:

What are the minimum features that would make a TV future compatible/decent now?

I think:
- HDR
- local dimming
- HDMI 2.1

Anything else around video/audio standards that is kind of a bare minimum and would be a mistake to leave out?

Depends on how future proof you are thinking. Are any TV's HDMI 2.1 compliant now? I don't think HDMI 2.1 will be widely adopted for at least 6 years minimum. By that time it you will probably be ready for a new TV.

It is probably not possible to be future proofed over say a 5 year time frame.

Q. Going round to my parents to set up their new TV. I've seen a number of people talk about how they didn't like the picture on a particular TV, fiddled around with settings and voila! What are your recommendations? Am I fine sticking with the default settings? Are there a couple of things I should tweak? Thanks!!

Calibration is important but on newer sets I've found that the presets are probably fine for normal use. Just don't use vivid setting. Stick to the standard or cinema style presets.

I also can't stand any motion enhancements so I always turn all that off. The best thing to do is to look up your set on AVS forum and search for settings that other people used.

given your parents are olds i imagine they might like a more vivid setting. but yeah motion enhancements gotta go.

Blue Planet in 4k

Got a 65C7P from LG. Freaking gorgeous. Got a good price too from a site called Greentoe where you can bid for things (street price is ~2600, got it for 2100). Also bought an X800 UHD Sony Player and a Y107. Not the fanciest setup but the TV is excellent and sound system is solid (not my most important factor since I live in a row type home. Content from UHDs and Netflix/Hulu/etc that are in 4K look so sick. Bought Blue Planet 2--can't wait to enjoy it.

^props... welcome to the oled club!

Look at this blending... absolutely zero banding in the tone as it changes color. I love my C7 but I wish I could sit closer... right now I am sitting about 14-15' away. This monitor would be perfect if you could sit about 6-7'.

If you like blue planet, check out Samsara... it's mastered in 8k.
