Some write-as-I-listen impressions:

After first 5 songs: They're trying to sound like Phoenix and it doesn't work. Which is frustrating, because Phoenix owe much of their sound to the Strokes to begin with. Most of these songs sound like B-sides, and the lead single is very pedestrian.

50 50 and Slow Animals (tracks 6 and 7) are slightly better/more interesting than the preceding tracks. Slow Animals sounds like the best of the first 7 songs after the first listen.

First track, Tap Out, and Happy Endings sound like 8-bit video game music. Which isn't all bad, just odd mixed in with some of the 80's influences and Phoenix-impersonating.

Last few tracks are pretty underwhelming. Closing track, Call It Fate Call It Karma, is just boring. It could pass as a hidden track at the very end of a good record, but instead this is the closer of an 11-song mediocre album. 5th song, 80's Comedown Machine, also doesn't really go anywhere.

Tap Out sounds better on second listen, and most of these songs will sound much better live. There's a few decent songs on Comedown Machine, but it's definitely their worst album, imo. I'm guessing some Strokes fans will hate on Angles more, but for me this is a step down from their last record.

People generally seem to be liking it, much more then I expected as well. I like it as well.

I really like this new Vampire Weekend song.

Edit: And that Village Henry Krinkle remix as well, thanks.

My song "I Need A Hit" was selected as one of the three finalists in the John Lennon Songwriting contest's electronic category. I will probably submit a few songs for this year's contest, too, so I would appreciate any criticisms from the discerning music fans in this forum.

You can find I Need A Hit and the finalists I was competing with on the finalists page here:

I'd be interested to hear how you guys think my song compares to the other finalists' songs. It's disappointing that I didn't win the category, but I'm also happy to have been competitive amongst professional musicians when I'm just a hack hobbyist.

Don't think so. Saturday Night Live ran a commercial for the album. Just 10-15 seconds, but it's that exact hook.

This other version is neat too

I can't really explain it, just strikes me as a lesser version of a lot of stuff that's been done. Maybe I'm old and crusty.
