A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except Monday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer" .

The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down: Why not on Monday? and the voice from in the well shouts back: Because on Monday, it’s your day in the well.

Speedle requested i do a well and i obviouklsy don't want to upset him. As a reliable source has informed me that he is on suicide watch after his poor showing in the Micro WSOP.

I'm gonna be playing all night, so i'll answer any questions when i take a break.

Do people pay off better?

What winrate could you get at stars?

Fancy meeting up this summer if you're still in Leeds? (I'll be somewhere in Yorkshire)

Brief poker story.

I started playing poker around 4 years ago whilst in first year uni. At first we just played stupid 6 man sit and go type things, with tiny effective stacks. No one knew how to play but I really enjoyed it, then about 6 months later I read a book called “Big Deal” by Anthony Holden and started to become hooked by the game. I started to go to the local casino to play in some turbo donkaments and although I never cashed I always enjoyed it enough to want to go back for more.

It was around this time that I first deposited online. I remember depositing $30 and turning it into $300 the first day playing $10 sit n go’s (although I lost most of it playing 100NL the next day), I hadn’t quite got the hang of bank roll management yet. Over the summer of 2005 I played on and off online, then eventually turned my hand to cash games at the end of August on party poker. I was 4 tabling 50NL with a $300 bankroll, but the games were so soft I did really well for a month or so. I then went back to uni and cashed everything out. I repeated this process every holiday, making enough money to during the holidays to not have to work during term time.

When I graduated from Uni I couldn’t really think of a career I wanted to do so I started playing poker full time. I deposited another $300 and quickly grinded that up into a decent bankroll by playing 25NL. By this time I was 8 tabling and moved up to 100NL fairly quickly. Although I didn’t have poker tracker at the time, I was a set miner if I had to guess my stats were probably around 13/5 or so and I didn’t really understand the benefits of position very well. The games back then were still very easy so I managed to win at a really decent rate, despite my style. I played 100NL-200NL from about oct 06 to feb07, when I went away for 5 months on a round the world trip (all payed for by poker). When I got back I decided to go back to uni to do a masters degree, so I spent last summer grinding to pay for it.

That’s been the pattern since last summer really, grind poker to pay the bills. I’ve been playing a mix of 50NL and 100NL depending on my bank roll at the time. (as I’ve had to cash out a lot to pay for bills) I feel like my game has really improved in the last year or so though, and can’t really believe I won so much playing my old style. I’ve just come back from a 7 or so week break, and hope that I can move up the limit’s a bit over the summer, as I don’t really have any financial commitments at the moment.

I’m hoping to get a real job soon though, so my poker grinding days may be numbered. But overall poker has given me a lot. It’s paid for my degree, countless holidays and flights to the states and generally allowed me to lead a lifestyle I wouldn’t have been able to without it. I may not love the game as much as I did when I first started, but it still provides me with an intellectual challenge I’ve not been able to find anywhere else.

Liverpool England. I'm in Uni at leeds now though.

Winning day. $950 ish at 100NL. $700ish at 50NL.
Losing day. I lost $650 in an hour at 50NL once.

I'll have a look for my favourite hand

I'm doing a masters in international finance at the moment.

I like lots of music. Not really a fan of cheesy pop, or techno though.

Usually play 14-20+ tables depending on how i feel, or the time of day. I don't use a HUD and i guess i'm just used to ongame as i have't played that much anywhere else.

Don't play on stars so no Fpps. Just clear whatever random bonuses Ongame decide to give me

More. I honestly don't think he is anywhere near his full potential yet. His passing and finishing are only going to get better, and when you put that with his already amazing movement you will get a truly amazing player.

I think the 3 key things would probably be

1) Position - Specifically blind stealing and not playing easily dominated hands OOP.

2) Value Betting - This is one of the most common flaws in the micros, people not getting value from their hands,

3) Identifying the playing styles of their opponents - and realising that you should be stacking off a lot lighter against a maniac than a nit

Not sure about the order they would go in though

A few months a go definitely but now i'm not so sure. The 50NL games at Ongame are nitfests at the moment, not sure where all the tags have come from

Do people pay off better?

Well it depends. I think the games are probably a bit easier, but it's all about game selection. There are lots of aggro donks at 100NL though, who just seem to be throwing their money away

What winrate could you get at stars?

Who knows. MY winrate at 50NL on ongame was like 8ish PTBB over hundreds of thousands of hands, so it would probably be less than that but i'm not sure how much. As i would be able to use a HUD, i'm sure it would be less but i doubt it would be that much less. I nearly moved over to stars recently but couldn't be bothered waiting to put a bankroll on there. The frequent player system is definitely much better

What made it 'click' for you in terms of getting better?

After my break last year i decided to get better, change my style and start reading two plus two more. There is a really good post in the archives about blind stealing, which just click with me. Then over last summer i just killed 50NL playing my new TAG style

Fancy meeting up this summer if you're still in Leeds? (I'll be somewhere in Yorkshire)

Sure. I'll be around

Why am i so attractive to women?
Sounded simples answer was better than mine.

Interesting that you don't use a HUD. Do you have some sort of note taking system to be able to quickly identify different player types?

If you had the choice to play any site in the world, what site would you choose and why?

Why do you think stars FPP's are so good when they dont offer rakeback?

All of the ongame skins have a note taking feature on them, and a colour code system you can use. I've got a different colour for each type of player and just put in the basic PT stats for the regs. After a while it's easy to notice who aren't regs, and i just have PT open to check if i have any stats on them. It's not as easy as HUD but it seems to work for me.

Well i play at ongame mainly because i a have pretty much always played their and am used to the software. Although it does take some getting used too. It's probably softer than stars, although the frequent player schemes suck on a lot of the skins.

I've thought about moving though, as the stars software is supposedly far superior and if you play a lot at a decent limit then they have the best rewards system. If i ever play higher than 200NL it won't be on ongame as their are very few games above this running.

If you are wondering about the different reward schemes, there are a lot of threads knocking about on them.

Do you use the aggression stats in your hand reading process? I pay attention to the VPIP and a few others but I don't really know how to implement that stat in any effective way. Do you categorise players according to some aggression ranges or something?

I'm a winning player on NL25 but for some reason, everytime I move up to NL50 I do great for 10K hands then lose it all in a few days and have to drop back to 25. I suspect maybe my inability to use all the statistics is responsible for that.. Does it sound likely?

Can't do a lifetime graph sorry, as i had computer issues last month and had to delete all but my latest DB.

This graph is from feb-march ish. Probably about 50/50, 50NL and100NL. Feb was all 50NL and was my worse month for a while, but march went much better.

It's all i've got as i haven't been using stats since i started playing again, as if you turn them off Ongame runs much better. Gotta turn them back on for 100NL though.

Oh yeah i've got this from december as well.
