NL2 - How to play QQ when a K on the flop?

Not sure what I should have done. And was it correct to fold on the river? I was getting decent odds, but there was flush + overcard...

Re: NL2 - How to play QQ when a K on the flop?

don't build the pot 3 way oop with a mediocre hand, x flop
turn is atrocious, you really need to learn how to make disciplined folds and stop spewing
a lot of the hands you post have this in common, you don't want to fold so you raise instead
you will never ever make money and move up if you keep doing this stuff

Re: NL2 - How to play QQ when a K on the flop?

Preflop
I would go a little bit bigger, at least to 4bb, maybe see if you could push it up to 5bb. It may not seem like a big deal, but check out Tip: Raise to 4bb instead of 3bb preflop if you want to play for 100bb stacks in Progressive Bet Sizing.

Flop
I think that betting this flop is a good idea in order to protect your equity. You can get aces to fold, and make money from flush draws and worse pairs, or at least make them pay to continue.

ionutd, check out Why Pot Control Is A Bogus Concept from the Red Chip Poker Podcast. They argue that it ignores equity protection, and that equity protection is crucial (amongst other things):

Quote:
Also, it reinforces an erroneous idea regarding the game of poker. It leads players to believe that protection is way less important than it actually is. It’s as if we’re saying, “Okay, we don’t need to protect the equity here. The most important thing is controlling the size of the pot.” That’s absolutely not how poker works.
Turn
I don't think that there's a reason to raise versus the turn lead. At NL2, players are very loose, and in particular overvalue top pair and better, so I wouldn't expect Villain to ever fold a king, especially to a small raise. If, hypothetically, you knew that you were up against a flush draw, raising would be the correct play, but a full pot turn lead is usually a sign of strength and I wouldn't expect to be up against too many flush draws here.

At NL2 and other small stakes games, the generally recommended strategy is to play tight ranges preflop, value bet hard, only bluff selectively, and get out of the way when they display strength.

River
The 2s is a really awful card for you. If Villain did happen to be bluffing, he's probably doing it with a flush draw. And if he happened to have 53, that also gets there. The only thing I can think of that Villain could have that you beat is maybe a bluff with ace high, but that is a very small part of his range, so this is a fold.

It may seem counterintuitive to be folding when you have such great pot odds. You have about 4:1 pot odds, so Villain only needs to be bluffing about 20% of the time for your call to be profitable. 20% isn't a lot, but it's more than small stakes players will be doing. Check out Stop Paying Them Off, and play around with this Should You Call tool to get a feel for ranges and percentages.

Re: NL2 - How to play QQ when a K on the flop?

I think you can discount most of what 'Adamzerner' wrote. He wrote that you can get AA to fold OTF (which will never happen, but that villain will call with a weak K OTT....doesn't make any sense.

I think pre-flop and flop are both fine. The raise on the turn I think everyone will agree is the misstep in this hand. Villain will indeed rarely fold top pair here OTF and OTT no matter how weak (K9off etc...) especially given the suspicious check-raise, and you're putting yourself in a spewy spot as was mentioned by 'ionutd' where you might talk yourself into a bad call OTR or even trying to run a dangerous bluff.

I think the standard line here should be to bet the flop, check-call the turn and check-call a river bet or check-fold if you think he doesn't have enough bluffs there.

Not sure the reasoning on the turn check min raise. Should just be bet, c/c, c/c reasonable bet.

Never bet that flop unless villain is ftcb above 50%. Even then think twice.

That turn raise looks like bluff from you, I would make standard cbet after flop just like you did and after flop just check/fold, Im not expert at all (fighting to move up micros aswell )but this far what I haved learned
#1 Never bluff micros
#2 If villian is passive at flop and after shows up strenght ,thats usually a strong holding for them.
#3 Positions is super important!
I know you isolated fish ,but OOP I make bigger raise like 4BB

GL at tables!
