How to play AQ here? How to play AQ here?

I have 4.5k in the cut off position, villian has 3.5k in utg+1. Blinds are 25/50. Villian often gets bored and goes does stuff with random cards from time to time, but plays similar with air or solid hands. He (Villian) raises to 150, it folds to me and I re raise to 400 with aq of diamonds, everyone else folds and he calls. Flop comes Tc 5c 7d. Vill donk bets to 600, I call (don't believe him). Turn comes Js, vill checks and I make it 800. Villian thinks for about 4 seconds and then shoves all in. After much thought I fold. Villian turns over A8 of spades.

Should I have checked the turn here and see what he fires on the river? I fired on the turn to try and get value from weak aces (as he will call with one usually) or get low pocket pairs to fold. How to play?

Use the enter key or a hand converter.

Context of hand (live/online/cash/tournament)

Don't post results for at least 24 hours because you'll get shred advice.

Flat vs UTG+1 pre.

Flop favors your range, but you didn't really get any of it. Either raise or fold here. Probably fold.

Betting turn to "get value from worse Aces is lolbad.

Opponent calls a 3bet in EP and you "don't believe him" when get bets. As in, you don't believe he can match your Ace-high?

You have a hand with very modest showdown value in a 3bet pot. If you're going to turn your hand into a bluff, think about what it represents, what opponent's range is likely to be and how it interacts with the board. If you're trying to make a bet both for value and as a bluff then you're likely confused about the situation.

I think you need to better describe your thought process.

For example, the comment "I don't believe him" makes me think you're not even considering his range or what he might think about your range. Just because he's a maniac sometimes doesn't mean that he doesn't act logically at other times.

Like your bet on the turn-- what are you trying to represent? What does your bet make him think that you have?

From my point of view, you cannot have a very strong hand (from the villain perspective). There's a flush draw out there. He donked the flop and checked the turn. Perhaps there are some flush draws in villains range at this point.

(btw, you never mentioned if you had or didn't have Ace of clubs which could have factored into your decisions)

So imagine if you had two pair on the turn--would you still have put in a bet that 'small.' That bet gives flush draws decent odds to call. I'd imagine that 2 pair on the turn would bet at least 1/2 pot (I think your bet is a little less than 1/2). 2 pair would prob bet 3/4 for 'protection.' (I get the feeling that terms is taboo around here)

So back to villain's perspective: you seem weak, perhaps TPTK at best. All-in seems likely to get a fold from villain perspective based on your smallish turn bet.

In retrospect if you're gonna bluff the turn, I think a bigger turn bet is required given the board.

Back to my previous statement-- "I don't believe him" needs to be clarified. Does that mean you thought 'he has complete air' or perhaps 'he might have a flush draw'

If complete air, maybe the smallish bet gets a fold from villain-- however, like I mentioned, the smallish turn bet can also give villain info about what you have or don't have...

my 2 cents, I'm by no means good at poker as I'm still trying to build a roll at microstakes, but that's how I see it.
