Is there a standard approach to the micros on this forum that the majority agrees with?

I mean an updated version of sircuddles guide

Because you all talk way deeper than that these days.

I'm suspecting Doug Polk somehow changed the consensus but I missed the memo.

Good information in that thread. The starting hand requirements are way too tight imo. You'll get blinded away with that.

The principles of bet for value and don't get too crazy with bluffs is good advice. Keeping the game simple is a good idea (not donk betting flops or cold calling 3-bets).

If you are unsure of whether to check/call or bet/fold, choose bet/fold.

Adapt to your opponents. Don't assume your opponent's are stupid and use that to justify bad plays. They are thinking human beings, as bad as they may be, trying to understand why they make the plays they do will help you better read the situation.

After perusing the guide, I think most of the regs already play that way. There are vastly fewer “fish” at full ring micros today compared to 2009. If you intend to beat the stakes and move up, you will be forced to play a style that is profitable against the regs that play according to that guide, in addition to stacking off the few fish.

If you intend to hang around and enjoy a nitty boring breakeven existence then you can play according to the guide.

Downswings and variance are from winrate. If your winrate is lower, you will experience more painful swings more often.

Playing too tight and too predictably leads to lower winrate and higher variance.

I don’t particularly enjoy full-ring NL10, but there is no big secret to beating it. When I get to 30 BI and switch back to 6-max I doubt I will ever grind full ring again.

I play way more pots than the nits, raise first in always, limp behind with suited connectors, c-bet over 75 percent, donk whenever I think it can end the hand, etc.

Net result is I get all the small pots no one really wants, and my ranges are designed and executed to be uncapped almost always.

When you finally make a stand in a big pot, the decision for me is pretty easy, and I am uncapped so I usually “have it” more often than you do.

I agree with a lot that was said above, only I think it's necessary to have a strong tag game before a player moves into having a strong lag game, so I wouldn't recommend too much advanced stuff for a new player because that would just hurt them more than helps them.

Thanks for all the replies

ok so the guide tells you to play WT.. which is a good starting point if on fishy tables.
its not so relevant now but totally tells you how to smash the fish once you find them.

This forum seems to say something else..

And this is how most discussions go..

Quote:
no stats on villain..Hero has TAG image,
called in the SB with Ks4s... I had TP, he raised me on turn, 56 is definitely in his range but am I never folding here?

I didnt raise blah because I didnt want to fold out his worse hands..my range includes plenty of big blahblahs V will know this,

so why would he pot the blah. what is his bluff range.. should I balance ..

or My Equity is near 60% .... your range wants to check the turn.,,,

he needs to win 52% of the time here
What I am asking is.. everybody seems to talk like this now, is it GTO or something else?

I have seen Polks videos and thought "hmm when I get up to 200NL Im gonna need to know that stuff but I dont need it yet.."

These discussions seem to say it is very relevant now in the micros.. so is there a source of wisdom, a link to a guide like sircuddles on steroids..

where is this accepted approach described, and why is it the accepted approach in the micro forums when all I have to do is play ABC vs all the callers ?

FYI I am playing 10NL on stars and trying to improve .. join in the forums, but my approach feels so alien to what I read, I feel like I am years behind the times..

Hmm. There is a lot of noise and chatter in the forum that makes it not the best learning tool. Every hand will usually be debated, seldom is there agreement.

I think you are searching for the right vocabulary and methodology to understand what you are reading.

In any case, the best way forward is to start posting your own hands.

Tips:

1) do not include the resulting action after the point in the hand you are curious about. People are results oriented by nature, but poker is not. Poker is about decision making.

2) if you have a good sample of statistics on the villains in the hand, include that. Otherwise label them ‘unknown’.

3) describe your thoughts for why you played it the way you did. This is your range of hands you would play similarly, so your opponents don’t know your exact hand, but your range of hands.

4) have some thick skin. Accept some criticism, but also stand up for yourself. Just because you are learning does not mean that we are smarter than you. However, if we all agree that you misplayed the hand, it is very likely you did misplay the hand.

5) Get to it! Post some hands! Also ask questions in the hand threads that you don’t quite understand.

I love all the answers guys, but my question was more about joining in the forums and singing from the same songsheet..

I look forward to getting into some difficult spots and posting the hands in due course.
