Hi TwoPlusTwo,

This was Villain's very first hand at the table. Feeling like a awkward shove or fold spot even though a shove only puts draws in a tough spot and doesn't really get called by worse made hands very often at all in my estimation.

Ignition Casino - $0.25 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

MP: $23.92
CO: $25.00
BTN: $24.65
Hero (SB): $53.33
BB: $25.00
UTG: $32.03

Hero posts SB $0.10, BB posts BB $0.25

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.35) Hero has 8 9

fold, fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to $0.60, BB calls $0.35

Flop: ($1.20, 2 players) 9 8 K
Hero bets $0.85, BB calls $0.85

Turn: ($2.90, 2 players) 5
Hero bets $1.70, BB raises to $8.00, Hero?,

It is BvB and I opened only 2.5x so I expect Villain to have a pretty wide range going to the flop

When he raises this big on the turn, I'm very much discounting all nut flushes.

I'm thinking this range is mainly low flushes, which he can have more of considering the preflop ranges I mentioned above. Also, 67s, and some other strong made hands which we block but still make up several combos (e.g. K9, K8s, K5s, 88), and bluffs which I expect to mainly be straight draws and perhaps something like A8o or ATo with A

Pretty sure he had all the JTo, T7s, going to the turn but don't know how likely Villain is to make a big play with one of those hands OTT.

I appreciate your thoughts on this one!

Sorry, I just realized I put this in the wrong forum. This is 6max.

Mods, if you have the chance to move this to the proper location that would be appreciated.

I’d prefer a bigger default open size, is this normal in these games?

I like the flop sizing. Would you ever consider a smaller cb here?

I wouldn’t be so quick to discount nut flushes, this bet looks like an attempt at building the pot. This is a great size to max value, either way it’s extremely polarising. Doing this with a combination of flushes and good flush draws considering removal seems good to me. I’m not sure JT is often part of a range here though.

I’d imagine in practice villains tend to underbluff these spots though, and considering stack depth we can probably exploit fold. If villain shows any bluff propensity or an ability to pile on pressure on scare cards I think we’re too high up in our range to fold.

I recently started opening 2.5 instead of 3. I find the player pool generally plays too tight from the blinds and I seem to get almost as many folds with 2.5 as I did with 3 so I feel that the similar FE with better price allows me to open more hands profitably.

What are your thoughts on a smaller Cbet? I generally will cbet 1/2 pot on dry flops about 2/3 on wet flops.

I love the 1/3 sizing on dry flops for much the same reason as you like the smaller opens from sb. Players overfold so I can bluff more and react badly to it.

I don’t think this flop calls for it though.

Hey if your finding very similar results and cutting back on required fold equity then that’s great. I might experiment a little.

Why did you discount but flushes btw?

In the fields I play (25NL & 50NL on Ignition) it seems nut flushes are played as either flats or smaller raises here. A Potsized raise tends to indicate a hand that wants some protection, such as a low flush that doesn't want another heart to fall.

I admit, I haven't dove into my database and reviewed tons of nutflush hands to be sure, but I review hands after each session and it's hard for me to remember scenarios where someone fastplayed in this manner with a NF and Ignition allows you to see all hole cards when hands are downloaded.

That’s fair enough. The only reason I mention it is that as villain if I turned the nuts id be looking at the pot and thinking it’s too small. I’d play similar with some but flush draws if balance was a consideration.

Thanks for sharing. I've recently had friends reccomend the same thing. I've always feared that 1/3 sizing would induce lots of bluffs but i'm probably giving the field too much credit for noticing and adjusting to different sizing. 2.5x pre has not induced more 3bets so far.

I think eventually it’ll be picked up on and exploited more, upswing and the poker bank will put analysis out. But for now it seems golden, my cbet. Success rate hasn’t wobbled. Strange I know.

I am folding there are better two pairs, 67 gets there and a flush, we have a bluff catcher here.
