It's FOOTBALL, not soccer! Soccer is the name the US gave to the game because the US version of Rugby is called Football. Football for their Rugby isn;t a correct name. It's not actually a ball and they almost never use their feet......

Am, Aussie, Canadian, Association, Rugby are all different types of football.
Ball does not mean spherical.
Football got it's name for being a game played on feet, as many other popular games around the time it was invented was played on horse. Kicking the ball had nothing to do with the name.

Think John Cleese is totally right with regard to the improvisatory nature of football, and how that differs from a lot of US sports.

Basically every colony that achieved independence from Britain came up with their own versions of football. Football in England is totally an expression of the working class/is a folk game. Makes sense newly independent countries would naturally develop their own versions - also explains the origin of why people get antsy about it. I don't think it is a big deal myself.
