So I just got invited to this as a +1. I usually don't brag about this kind of thing but I'm pretty excited and it should be a lot of fun. I'll report what I can about the game.
I just got back from it. It was held at a skatepark which we thought was random until we actually saw what they were showing. It was just one map called Blackbelly Skatepark and motion controls were turned on and couldn't be changed which was pretty disappointing. They had a section where they gave you a Splatoon cap and let you spray it with paint filled nerf water guns. That was a nice touch.
It was a press meet so at the start of the night, Nintendo's marketing manager did her little spiel and explained that there were 16 Wii Us with Splatoon and 1 with Yoshi's Woolly World and 1 with Kirby for people who were waiting to get in on a multiplayer game. As soon as she said we could play, a line started to form behind Yoshi which left some Splatoon stations with no one on them. I thought that was pretty funny. I got to play Yoshi and thought it was a lot of fun. It was only a 3 level demo but they were varied and it was so chill to play.
The way it was set up was a bit annoying. There were 2 sets of 8 consoles linked together. You couldn't choose a class or anything and it was just Turf War on Blackbelly Skatepark. After each round it would jumble up the teams and classes. The level is exactly what it sounds like, a skatepark with ramps and bowls etc. I had a lot of fun swimming through it as the squid. I didn't see anything new in terms of gameplay that wasn't in the global testfire though, it was exactly the same just on a different map. I wanted to see some more SP stuff but from what the reps were saying, it's pretty minimal. They also said there is no 4 player local and that 2 player is some sort of small co op mission.
The game is a lot of fun and I'm really hoping it does well so that people will build a community around it and keep the servers alive. If you missed out on the first global testfire then they're doing another one on the weekend.
Yoshi keeps getting pushed back it seems. I loved kirbys epic yarn for Wii. I keep thinking it will be kind of like that, so it's been high on my list since I heard of it.
Splatoon: hurry! Last new game I bought was mp10, and well, that game sucked. In dire need.
