I gotta say, there are way too many games coming out right now. I'm not even done with Borderlands, and I already want to pick up Modern Warfare 2, Ballad of Gay Tony, Dragon Age, Torchlight and L4D2. Ugh...

Been grinding 18 mans and I'm getting a lot of FPPS as I get close to achieving Platinum.

With these points I'm thinking about getting the PS3 (Stars dropped it from 36,000 FPP to 27,000 FPP or perhaps the cash bonus) or getting the cash bonus and using it to buy a PS3 or pay rent.

My question is how long do you think these systems will be alive? I can see the PS3 being around longer as it's capabilities havn't been pushed yet and I can see it having a longer life from this day as it came out later than Xbox360. I hear a lot of negatives about the PS3 such as lack of title selection, PSN sucks, etc.

What do you guys think?

I would imagine the 360 and PS3 have the same lifespan - both companies will come out with new consoles around the same time to keep the other from getting a huge lead, and the current generation will stop getting new games like 1-2 years after that.

That would probably be 2012 maybe when new consoles come out? Just guessing.

Ya, especially since Microsoft said that Natal is an add-on for the 360. Sure, it has the potential to be a brand new console, but they know it's too early to introduce one.

From what I hear 360 has a pretty good lifespan still left, I wouldn't let that influence you in your decision.

I'm still into Borderlands, not getting MW2, BoGT.

Not sure what Torchlight is.

I got burned out on L4D, so doubt I will be getting L4D2.

Dragon Age, I already took it back for store credit. I'm pretty much only playing online co-op games now. I don't find myself enjoying single player much, anymore.

I don't know what it is but today's games look great/high anticpation but don't have the depth they used to have. Maybe it's just I'm getting older and moving away from video games but I never remember a time in my life where I played the current games and put them down after a few weeks. Could be that I've been so spoiled in video games that I'm becoming jaded quickly with new titles.

When I was young, "depth" was playing Super Mario 100 times. Real depth has always been kinda rare, I think (strategy games tend to have it - Civilization, for example - and RPGs tend to as well, but in other types of games it's hard to come by).

Yeah I think you're right about our perception of depth when we're younger.

When I was 7-12 or so (I can't remember exactly) I really got into Doom, Wolfenstein, and Jill of the Jungle. There wasn't much for levels/weapons/etc (Doom had 9 if I recall correctly, and Wolf had 4 weapons) yet I'd still play these games non-stop day in and day out.

Xbox console ban is 'permanent'
By Jonathan Fildes
Technology reporter, BBC News

Modern Warfare 2 on shop shelves
The ban may have been timed for the release of Modern Warfare 2

Thousands of Xbox 360 owners who have been cut off from Microsoft's Xbox Live service will have to buy a new console if they want to play online again.

Microsoft told BBC News that banned machines will be permanently barred and "unable to connect to Xbox Live".

A message displayed on affected consoles said there was "no recourse for terms of use violations".

Microsoft has barred as many as 1m gamers from Xbox live for modifying their consoles to play pirated games.

"Users of banned Xbox consoles can recover their profile to another, unmodified Xbox 360 console to resume their Live service," the firm told BBC News.

"The banned console will be unable to connect to Xbox Live."

However, modified consoles will still work offline.

'No recourse'

Microsoft said barring gamers was part of an ongoing drive to curb piracy.

But a statement from them suggests this latest wave was timed to prevent people from playing pirated versions of the widely-anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

We believe that even one modified console on the system is one too many
Microsoft

"We can assure you that if an Xbox Live member follows the Xbox Live terms of use, purchased a retail copy of Modern Warfare 2 and played the game on an unmodified Xbox 360, no action will be taken," the firm said.

Microsoft said that it had banned a "small percentage" of the 20 million Xbox Live users worldwide.

Many gamers modify their consoles by installing new chips or software that allows them to run unofficial - but not always illegal - programs and games.

Some BBC News website readers claimed that they had "modded" their consoles to allow them to make back-ups of games that they had already bought.

"Discs are very fragile things and some users like to have their games backed up," said Donald Glass of Aberdeen.

"After all you will have paid £40 for a new disc. It is my opinion that once you buy a disc you should be allowed to do whatever you want with the media as long as you do not break copyright laws."

Microsoft has not said how it was able to determine which gamers to disconnect.

"We do not reveal specifics, but can say that all consoles have been verified to have violated the terms of use," the firm said in a statement.

It said that gamers who had been barred were using their modified consoles to "play illegally pirated games".

"We believe that even one modified console on the system is one too many".

Industry figures suggest that piracy may cost the video game industry as much as £750m a year.

Reports have speculated that new "mods" could soon be on the market that allow gamers to get round the blocks.

Starcraft 2 in 2010.
Diablo 3 definitely not in 2010.

It is sort of interesting that they timed it right at the release of MW2. Seriously, this might boost holiday console sales.

Bought a 360. I think what I want to do first is play old/cheap (but good) games. Unfortunately, I haven't followed video games much in the last few years. So here's where you tell me what to get.

I like zombie games, games with good storylines, and the occasional (good) war game. I also tend to like game of the year games. I guess popular games are okay by me.

Here are some I am potentially eyeballing:

Lego Star Wars (Complete Saga)
CoD 2
Gears of War
Mass Effect
Bio Shock
Dead Rising
DeadSpace

Looking to buy one or two. Which of these (or other oldish games) should I look to get?

I'd get Bioshock and Gears of War for sure. Dead Space a close third. Dead Rising is fun but repetitive and I haven't played the other two.

Bought that 360 Arcade a few days ago. Loving BioShock so far.

Just purchased 60 GB Starter pack (HDD, Headset, 3 months Live) and RE: 5 (to play with a friend) for $125. I have no idea if I'll need 60 instead of 20 GB, but the value was basically free. $90 for 60/headset/3months or $50 for refurbished 20.

Don't buy Dead Rising unless you have an HDTV. The mission critical text is unreadable on an SDTV.

Heavy Rain probably won't be popular here, since it's a younger, action-junkie crowd, but it definitely has piqued my interest...a lot.

Felix, it sounds really interesting. Too bad it is only PS3. I haven't played a PS3 yet, so I doubt I'll get a chance to play Heavy Rain. Looks really intriguing though.

Definitely. I like that you play as different protagonists thru the game. And if one dies, the story continues, but w/o that character. If they pull this off well, it should be an epic, although under-the-radar game.

Feb. release.

I spent the better part of my day (making it worse) by playing BioShock for like 6.5 hours. I beat the rest of the game, though, so that's good. I can return it to Gamestop tomorrow and pick up something new. I really like good story games, but I think I need something not so dark.

I think I enjoy my time spent playing games way more when they aren't too heavy, oddly enough. There's a time for Silent Hill, Resident Evil, or killing in general....but I've played way more NCAA than anything else in my life and I think that's because it's not violence related.

I really am weird with video games.

Not sure what to pick up next. Gears of War and Dead Space both fall into that category, but they're the next best games that are "free" with my trade-in tomorrow, so I don't know.
