The only thing I've ever pre-ordered is Tekken 3 for the original Playstation (got a free t-shirt!), but couldn't you pre-order and then when it comes out, wait to open the games until you read reviews and then return them if necessary?

EDIT: I probably just showed my age, too, as I realized these might be downloads.

I'm thinking this is Amazon Prime but at Best Buy you can have your pre ordered item picked up at the store and if you don't pick it up in 2 weeks they refund you.

I pre-ordered some of the Zeldas. Wind Waker had a sweet preorder:

Also got this one from renewing Nintendo Power, definitely +EV: https://zelda.gamepedia.com/The_Lege...or%27s_Edition

Does anyone else feel like they are getting pickier in regards to what they feel is a great game as they get older (lets call it 8-9 range out of 10 since no game is perfect)? Maybe it's because I have played a ton of games throughout the years (I'm 38), so what I consider "great" changes as I get older and becomes more and more rare.

The last 2 super hyped games I played and beat were GOW for the PS4 (big fan of the series), and then before that probably Zelda BOW. I enjoyed both games, but feel they only deserved about a 7 out of 10. That's still good in my book, but not "holy cow this game is awesome" type of feeling while playing it.

That last time couple of times I probably felt close to that feeling may have been playing Destiny 1 (before it got repetitive), or maybe Bloodborne since I enjoy challenging games. Maybe I'll have that feeling again when the Last of Us 2 comes out or even down the road when MP4 comes out on the Switch....time will tell I guess. Maybe I just need to find a new game I haven't beaten that is that good I may have missed on the PS4 or Switch.

I just feel like a lot of games, especially AAA releases, are overhyped/rated in general. We can be cynical and say it’s good for the whole industry when there’s a continuous cycle of hyping stuff up even if it doesn’t quite live up to billing. I sort of ranked all the last and current generation games I played and none of my favorites have released in like the last 5 years; Horizon Zero Dawn comes closest (to be fair I haven’t played a lot of AAA stuff for my PS4 but this stretches back before that). I’ve definitely gotten more enjoyment from smaller, independent games like FTL, Spelunky, or Enter the Gungeon than most major releases. A lot of franchises have become iterative and they weren’t necessarily that great to begin with.

As a clarification I'm not complaining. This is just an observation from how I feel playing games in the last 5 years. I think I have set the bar fairly high, and these overhyped games let me down a bit even though they are still fun. I too also like finding smaller hidden gem games, especially side scrollers which are seem to be a dying breed.

I still find myself busting out the Super Nintendo which is one of my favorite systems to play Zelda, Super Metroid, Contra 3, and many others.

Maybe I just need to enjoy the games more and not look for the next 9 out of 10 amazing game so that I dont get disappointed by a so I'll I'd game like GOW or BOW.

Sounds like a serious case of the olds. (I know because I suffer from this affliction myself.) I'm convinced if we were in middle school then most of these games would be GOAT status to us, however as olds almost all games just aren't as fun anymore.

As a fellow Old I think it's a combination the frequency and easy availability of AAA games coming out. When I was a kid you would wait for a year or more for the latest arcade game to come out with an atari 2600 or colecovision version of it, and we would play that game almost exclusively for the next few months.

These days it's impossible for a person with kids and a job to reasonably finish 1 AAA game before there are 3 others that have been released, which can lead to a combination of gaming ADHD and just plain not giving a lot of the massive open world games available today before you want to reach for the next new shiny thing dangled in front of us.

AAA games have gone the same way as Hollywood, all flash and no substance. I'm enjoying games at least as much now as I did 20 years ago, though I'm in to totally different genres. Embrace the old and start playing puzzle and simulator games!

game recommendation - Dishonored 2

picked it up for £5 when i was in the mood for something new and seeing its very high metacritic score. i love it. fun first person stealth/action/exploration game, really well designed. story is interesting enough for me to pay attention to and not do what i usually do (turn the sound down, listen to podcasts and ignore the story completely). general feel is somewhere between a bioshock game and a deus ex game, with various ways of completing missions, lethal/non-lethal etc (but way more fun, i didn't really like the new deus ex). never heard anyone talk about it before, game deserves more love imo. i haven't played rocket league for a week now, which is the highest praise i can possibly give.

Any thoughts on how it compares to the first? I bought both in a pack but kinda lost steam towards the end of the first.

nope sorry, bought 2 without playing 1 and just watched a youtube video to get caught up on the story. all the reviews i read said it was a significant improvement on the first in pretty much every way though, worth a go if you've got it lying around imo

Eh I got stuck on a sequence in the first mission, put it down, came back a while later and still couldn’t get past it so I’m probably done with it. I enjoyed the first one but the stealth is pretty wonky in both; they upped the enemy difficulty for 2 so it’s a lot harder to get out of jams using violence. Apparently this aspect gets easier as the game goes along and you acquire more tools and skills but for now this is a sunk cost for me. My tolerance for that kind of stuff is definitely way down as an old; yesterday I started Steamworld Heist and while I enjoyed it, I ran into a few punishing deaths and am now not enthused at all to go back. Just give me consequence free blowing stuff up, thanks

Tomorrow battlefield V reveal. Its been a very long time that i have looked forward to a game. All i want is a BF game set in ww2 with Battlefield 1 gameplay and graphics. Looks like its going to be that. Always been my favorite and its been to long since bf1942/call of duty 1,2 and brothers in arms. Some vietnam dlc after would also be nice. (How good was battlefield vietnam back in the day)

I bought BF1 premium for $125 or whatever ludicrous price it was at 2016 release with every intention of being a junkie, but I just couldn't get into the World War 1 environment. Every weapon just felt awful to me. It's probably not even a defensible opinion because each game is just a new skin of the last, but I only wound up clocking in a grand total of 4 hours on it. Only last week I finally bit the bullet and uninstalled it from my SSD to make room for XCOM2.

That said, I am also looking forward to the BF5 reveal if it brings things a little closer to modern day or beyond. I loved Bad Company 2, BF2142, and BF3/4.

Yeah i understand. I still play bf1 sometimes but i also don't really like the ww1 setting. I do like the gameplay and overall feel of the game. So just give me a reskinned bf1 in WW2 setting and its a dream come true. Indeed looks like its going to be that. Some bigger maps to mabye.

Mh, i have alot of doubts for battlefield v now.

The over the top customisation is going to take alot away from the authentic feel of ww2. I will vomit if i see a m1 garand available in all colors of the rainbow.

And whats with the over the top focus on female soldiers since bf1 jezus, never knew there were so many women fighting in world war 2. Some cool gameplay changes tough. Will have to wait for june 9 for some gameplay footage.
