Is Diablo 3 worth it for $20?

Probably not if you don't plan on buying Reaper of Souls. Game is much better than it was at launch though.

Anyone care to recommend a vendor or other advice for buying a new desktop gaming PC? I won't be playing the latest FPS, so I'm more value-conscious and noise-conscious (PC will be on in bedroom while I sleep) than I am concerned with performance, but my >5-year old system is just annoying me too much lately with its lagginess and hiccups.

I recommend building your own if you can.

Check out http://www.tomshardware.com/ and click on the "Build Your Own" section for some example builds.

Also check out their latest hardware comparison articles:

http://pcpartpicker.com/ is a really cool tool, but if you are really concerned with price/performance ratio and don't need the latest and greatest the optimal play is to wait around until Dell/HP/etc. have one of their random coupon deals on last year's model.

lolwat. Seriously, unless you have a grave aversion to reading, build your own. All you're going to get from a "we-build-it-for-you" company is a crappy warranty, a few gigs of worthless adware, and a fancy sticker for $500 more. If you ever require the use of a warranty, you'll likely end up using the manufacturer's anyway.

Again, this is just flatly incorrect at the mid-range.

This deal expired but is representative:
http://www.gotapex.com/deals/dell-xp...14-99-shipped/

There is no way you're building an equivalent system to that for $615. Now, practically, you wouldn't even try because of how awful that Dell's video card is, but for what the guy is talking about just the i7 in that is $300.

the problem with most pre builds is that they have a high end processor and a low end graphics, while for a gaming pc you want it the other way around

Yep. This is huge.

5% of gross revenue instead of 25% of net revenue. Full access to the source. Export to PC, Mac, iOS and Android, HTML5 and Linux soon.

Hopefully Unity counter with a similar offer or open up features on their gimped free version.

This is a very good point. Not only that, prebuilds tend to skimp badly on power supplies(and sometimes have weird case issues) so you're gonna be very limited with video card upgrade options. And if you're comfortable replacing the PS and video card you might as well just build your own.

But just from a raw price perspective, vulturing coupon deals is your best bet.

I have to assume like 3% of the people playing those [blank] Simulator [year] games are doing so sober.

It's great, but at the same time there's such an oversaturation of tiny indie teams flooding the market with games thanks to Unity and Greenlight/Desura etc. over the last few years, and it's only going to get worse. Greenlight lately seems to be a joke, there have only been a few semi-decent games released out of the many released in the last few months, so hopefully they figure out a better system soon. Twitch is proving to be the most reliable way to me to find good new indie games, so I'm not that worried, the good stuff will still rise to the top.
