I started to play Heavy Rain on the PS3. It's an adventure game where a serial killer called the Origami Killer is on the loose and you play various characters related to the murders. It has a unique playstyle where the action takes place almost entirely in QTE segments.

The story is interesting and it has a cool system where the game doesn't hand hold you at all and you have to figure out lots of subtle things on your own. For example, in one segment, you're a father with a kid. On a whiteboard in the kitchen, it says his schedule and there are a bunch of clocks around the house so you keep track of time and you have to make sure he does everything on schedule. The game doesn't tell you and lets you continue even if you mess it up. I guess it changes the story, depending on what you do and don't do in situations like this.

The bad thing is the QTEs get annoying because it's hard to focus on the story sometimes when you know you're gonna have to push some buttons at any moment.

Heavy Rain is fantastic or at least so I thought when I played it through 10 years ago or so. I placed it at my personal top 3 PS3 games. Maybe I should replay it to find out if it holds up. Quantic Dream has made two other quite popular games with same gameplay since then: Detroit Become Human and Beyond: Two Souls. I haven’t finished either, but the former is interesting enough.

After running around town for a bit to find a compatible SD card, got this sucker up and running. Plays flawlessly, having an absolute blast. I've had Pilotwings music stuck in my head all day.

I see them on Ebay for ~$150-$200.

Is it just loaded with a ton (or all) N64 games?

I bought directly from krikzz, the guy who makes them, for $99 plus $8 for shipping. https://krikzz.com/store/

It comes empty (for obvious legal reasons). You load up a micro SD card with the OS and any ROMs you want (it's pretty easy to find full library sets). SD card goes into the cartridge, boot it up and play!

Edit: FYI, they just released the X5 for the same price. It has dedicated saves (meaning you don't have to hit reset to save).

Man, that last screenshot. Star Wars N64 Shadow of the Empire. Was a damn tough game. Also scary vibes in it as a young kid, is what I remember.

Shadows is a lot easier now that I can use cheats! The Everdrive also has gameshark integration, so you can use any gameshark codes.

**** you IG-88, I'm coming for your ass.

Nice snag! Def looks great. Does it feel like there's input delay?

Nah, no input delay at all. The other device I use, the Retrotink, ensures that. We talked about it earlier ITT, but it’s a little gadget that upscales the video to 480p and HDMI, while also doubling the frames for smoother performance.

That's great to hear then and I may have double dipped the question heh.

That's great tho. I've always been a pretty big fan of emulation esp since it's not realistic to buy old SNES games given some of their prices (Chrono Trigger and Earthbound mainly come to mind).

Yeah Retrotink's have no lag at all and they're great. If you want one though I would hold off for a little while because he is about to announce the Retrotink 5x which will do up to 1440p with no lag which is going to be awesome. There's also an OSSC or the GBS control which will have more options/better control but not exactly plug and play like Retrotink. I love GBS though.

I've gone full flashcart/ODE wherever possible. Got a couple GCLoaders recently, really easy to install and get up and running.

No Mercy is ****ing awesome. Been playing a lot of Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 (FREEM mod) as well. Stuck in the water temple in OoT.

I seriously haven't turned on my PC in weeks.

I was gonna redo the Water Temple as an adult and see if I could do it. When I was in high school I didn't have time to deal with it and just wanted to play. I don't think I could honestly since I was somewhat confused even using the guide lol.

Its INCREDIBLY confusing and they did a great job of fixing it in the remake. No idea what they were thinking or how I got passed it when I was younger but I likely used some kind of guide

I never knew what the big deal was, but OoT came out when I was 15, so basically my peak mix of intelligence and free time to be able to do anything.

Also only needed a hint to get 1 of the gold skulltullas (the one in Zora's Fountain where you lift a rock gives you a new pathway to a ledge up above).

ok, so I decided to give NieR:Automata yet another shot (my 4th I think) and I'm beginning to think that the entire cult around this game is one big conspiracy designed to waste time of suckers like me. Every time I quit the game, I read yet another post somewhere saying "oh, but it gets ACTUALLY good after x hours of play", where x is magically always a bit more hours that I have playe so far.

I am now almost 15hrs in an I'm having a terrible time. Gameplay and level design are straight up atrocious, the combat is boring and button-mashy. There are mechanics like your pod, which has to be the dumbest thing in the history of gaming, you are simply supposed to have fire pressed at all times, why is that a thing? Are they testing my skill of having a button pressed non-stop?

Difficulty curve is non-existant, nothing even comes close to being as hard as tutorial (which was more annoying than hard, really), having instant heal in combat makes dying pretty much impossible.

Admittedly, the story is pretty cool, but its presentation is terrible, so far the game is just a chain of similiar fetch/explore quests, punctuated by supposedly "epic" action sequences, where I'm just button-mashing, since I can't see anything due to camera constantly switching angles.

Plus, the story is sooo heavy on subtext that I've alreay imagined every possible plot twist and character arc - there isn't really anything else to do while running through massive, empty levels. Said subtext isn't all that "sub" either, if I'll hear about 9S being ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED that machines are manifesting human traits one more time, I think my head will explode. There's really no need to make the same point 2137 times.

So, yeah, I think I'm gonna finish the game this time (at least one ending), but I feel like a living example of sunken cost fallacy. Even if the game DOES actually get good in the end, gating it behind 15+ hrs of terrible gameplay is unforgivable

oh, and yes, I do realise that many of the mechanics that I hate here so much are standard for "slasher" type games (or whatever they are called), but I don't play those games and NieR was supposed to be "universally" good

I didn't play a great deal further than you have, but as I understand it Nier Automata is all about the story (though people do like the flashy combat also) and doesn't "get good" until you've seen at least the 2nd main ending, probably the 3rd? The 2nd playthrough is worse than the 1st lol, so you got that to look forward to if you keep going. I am on a several year hiatus maybe halfway through that.

well, I decided to power through and finished the A route of Nier:Automata. The story was... bad, I guess this type of over-the-top cheeseness may appeal to anime fans, but definitely not to me.

I started the next playthrough and was actually pleasantly surprised that I get to play as 9s, different perspective on same events is really cool. I remembered that the tutorial was harder than the entire game combined, but I figured that they wouldn't do the same annoying motif again. Sure enough, 40 minutes later I died near the end of tutorial AND WAS SENT TO THE BEGINNING. AGAIN. WHY IS THIS GAME SO BAD.

I can imagine what was going through devs' heads while designing this "you know how players expect to learn the game in the tutorial? well, wouldnt it be extremely SUBVERSIVE if we actually made the tutorial harder than the entire game AND made it the ONLY part of the game without any save points?"

yeah, dont play this ****ing game, I think Im done now

I have to say that is freakin genius, that's a really long bike run there (I suspected it but in the youtube video description they talk about how many tries it took).
Made my day

Well they had to do multiple takes for each section I assume, considering the changing arm writings

If you mean just from the N64 (and not something different about the cartridge), I have a 14" CRT (with DVD player!) for this purpose. Just plugged in the Dreamcast for the first time in maybe 19-20 years.

I thought everdrives were emulation files/roms or whatever. So just wasn't sure if it had input delay or how that worked tbh.

Yeah, same here. I don't have NES but emulation works pretty well for NES. But I have SNES, Cube, chonky PS2 and 64 (tho the 64 doesn't get played much at all).
