I used to have "rules" with regards to grinding in 8-32 bit RPGs. If I was in a dungeon and anybody gained a level, I would turn around and go back out to the town (fighting more monsters along the way), sleep and save. Arbitrary rule, but I guess it's decent because it builds in just a little bit of extra grinding without you having to make decisions about timing.
When I played FF1 for NES I wouldn't leave the area near a new town until I could afford to buy the best weapons, armor and magic available. So I was mostly grinding for gold in that game, with EXP as a by-product. In Dragon Warrior 1 it was the reverse.
After finishing FF1 for some reason I went back and ground even more until all characters were maxed out at 99. I then beat the final boss in 2 hits.
