It's a weird balance at first. You want to read the chat because you want to know people like watching you and want you to succeed. It takes a really long time for that novelty to wear off and you're willing to shut it out. It also kind of drives you to keep going. Grinding speedruns in your basement with no acclaim is not glorious. Having 10000 people going "OMG TEH URN Kreygasm" is glorious.

You want the chat to be positive and be giving you good feeback... which *can* happen. But when it doesn't, it's hard to deal with. And takes a lot of time and experience to learn just how to deal with it.

It's also just hard to stream runs and not look at chat. You are always wondering what's going on. It's just human nature.

Yeah, that makes sense of course. I just mean rather than letting it tilt you to the point where you feel it effects your play then I'd lean on ignoring it. Another possibility would be to just ignore the chat once he's lost a great run etc or had a bad stretch. Like you know it's prob toxic or people trolling etc. Just shrug it off and bounce back and play your A game. It's kinda like poker cause you'll obviously have swings but if you know you're playing well then just keep doing whatever you're doing.

Yeah, that's prob quite a different experience to have 1-3k people all being shocked at a choke or whatever. But that's the time to not read it though as I said before. I think having an overall positive atmosphere/attitude will allow that to shine through. Like when I watch your stream everyone just seems chill, no ones trolling or spamming molly etc. Lethalfrag is another stream that seems generally pretty friendly in general. Which obv Frag seems like one of the nicest guy's in the world lol. Never raises his voice or gets mad.

Yeah, the not knowing factor is def strong lol. I used to hate when people would call and I didn't know the number. I always had to call them back.

Good personality if you ask me.
TB is an arrogant sack of **** but I think his popularity stems mostly from people being extremely dissapointed by general gaming journalism, where average games would still get 7/8's and TB was one of the first populair guys who actually discussed things critically. That's what he's made his career on so that's what he keeps doing. I agree he has become a bit of a egomaniac but he still makes some valid points most of the time.

If I'm gonna stream some ****

A) will my ****ty dell laptop with Windows 8 and an i5 and an AMD Radeon 7730M work okay and
B) what kind of capture card should i get, I want capability for hdmi, component, and composite all in one

A) I was streaming on a computer with Windows XP, 1.86 GHz i2 and 2GB RAM until a month ago, so your laptop is fine. OBS and XSplit aren't *that* memory intensive.

B) http://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Capture.../dp/B00840353W

That's considered the best quality & value capture card for HD stuff. I'm sure you can find something cheaper which will probably work.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I think I've messed around with OBS before and i think it worked fine? Gonna have to do some testing

Someone viewbotted me an hour ago. I'm not complaining because it shot me up the list and got me a bunch of new followers, but why do people do this?

I've gotten a fair few messages from "viewbot companies." Here I'll paste one:

Hello,

We offer services for Twitch streamers such as increasing viewers, followers and total views. We can be found at http://www.streamboosters.com

If you want to speak to someone directly, we have live chat on our website with agents online 24/7/365!

We offer our viewer increasing services by the hour, and we also offer unlimited use packages by the week or month. We work with some of the most popular streamers on Twitch, and have an excellent record in that over 1200 streamers we've worked with, not a single one has been detected and/or had issues with Twitch. And we have been in business over 1 year now!

The viewer increase will allow your channel to be higher in the Twitch listings which greatly increases the amount of real viewers that come to your stream and watch it. It is also possible to achieve partnership with our services. We've got many of our customers partnered already.

Questions? You can contact us through the live chat feature on our website (www.streamboosters.com). We also can show you a demo of our services on any channel you like if you're the skeptical type.

Sincerely,
http://www.StreamBoosters.com
Bolded might be why random people get viewbotted. Someone with comparable followers & viewers asks for a demo on your channel and boom.

blegh, I'm not really looking forward to it. I don't have a good stream situation at those hours (everyone will be awake causing noise) and don't like having to stream for a bunch of irrel noobs who know nothing. It's not AGDQ where I can make up some fake category like "co-op agent" and claim I got WR either.

It's summertime. I haven't even really been motivated to stream at all lately and this will just cause me to continue streaming in the following weeks to continue growing from the exposure.

Spoiler:
100k followers for most people is probably good for over 1000 subscribers, which is $2.5k/month. I have a hard time seeing any speedrunners having that many yet though. None of the top top guys beg for them that much or have giveaways or play games with them or whatever. I'd estimate closer to 500 subs, so like an extra $1k.

Ads, 4-5k viewers is probably good for about $20/hr. So maybe 25h/week which seems fair, like $500/week there, $2k/month.

Donations are a wildcard, but I'd estimate around $20k/year sounds right. Add it all up and it's what, $56k.

It's not *that* much. It's just a normal job. My estimates could be really far off on either side too. I know there are some dudes who have like 4000+ subs so they are making a ton. I'm pretty jealous of those like the TSM guys who can have 30k viewers with no personalities, but I'm sure they're so beta that the manager of those teams takes a good chunk.

The money isn't as glorious as a lot of viewers want to believe. We're not living in penthouses in Vegas and cruising around in yachts... yet.

Syndicate/TheSyndicateProject apparently just bought and built like a $3M GBP house (a tour of the construction is on his YT,) but if you're so big you can switch from Youtube to Twitch and get 500k followers in only a few months, then yeah...
