Goose, did you ever find any more of Henning's WRs to be faked? Also, do you think he's related to Viktor Blom?

A few facts about me:

1) I generally have no interest in watching other people play games, unless it includes audio commentary with them giving strategy insights that might help me play the game better, in which case I'm very interested.
2) I pretty much only play turn-based games (i.e. SolForge, Dominion, Crawl, Spectromancer, etc.)... anything that doesn't involve reflexes, with a few exceptions, because I have **** awful reaction times and am bad at clicking.
3) I know absolutely nothing about twitch, it's community, how it works, etc.

So my question is, how important is it for me to learn the twitch ecosystem?

Ecosystem? There are people that play the types of games that you describe. Magic the Gathering, etc. You search for the game. If anyone is playing it, you watch. You can attempt to interact via chat. Generally, smaller streams are better for this type interaction. Then you decide if you wish to continue watching or try to find someone more to your liking. Some really good players have no following, but are more than willing to provide their insights.

Are things broken into channels based on game, or is it more about "following" a player? and so forth.

So if I say some word that sounds ignorant or confused, it's because I am.

Ok, wasn't exactly trying to be a prick.

The mobile clients are live only to my knowledge (android - or at least my Kindle has no chat option), not all streamers are available on android as there also isn't a search feature. iOS may be different.

Broadcasts can be archived and saved at the option of the streamer. Really not sure how long the VODs last. I think it depends some on the amount of content the streamer produces.

Typically, people watch live. One 'benefit' is that there is the chat to view. Not all streamers include the chat in their broadcast, so watching a VOD can be a little confusing. However, often chat is worthless - especially in large streams.

I think that people can stream from iOS platforms. I have seen people stream Solforge when MTGO is down. I didn't get into that game, so I don't know it's current popularity online. However, I know it's available on Steam, so someone is probably playing it somewhere.

You follow a player to get updates when they stream. However, it's easy enough to just search for the game and see who's playing. Almost all streamers include the game that they are playing so that it is searchable. If they don't they are missing out on potential viewers.

Also, 2+2's Sporting Events mod Needle77 has some great NFL analysis in his archives and sometimes drunkenly streams video games.

What about ava, bergster, nilski and a few others? Also there's a few hotties on league of legends too.

What games? Depends how intense they are, I guess. I've streamed Starcraft 2 on a gaming laptop, all that really matters is that you have enough spare CPU cycles while running it to compress the video in real time.

I assume CoD/NHL would be on consoles, Minecraft PC? If it's PS4/XB1 I think streaming is built-in with those and your console does the whole thing, Minecraft on PC shouldn't require much power to stream.

Twitch servers in some areas of the world are really ****ing awful. I don't know if they will ever be able to handle the bandwidth they are pushing out.

I've found that partner streams seem to lag significantly less, but I can't confirm that.

Twitch lag got much worse for me as soon as PS4 came on, just as expected.

And it's going to get worse with Xbox One.

Yeah, well it went on for 2 or 3 rounds, where we'd find fakes, he'd "confess all his fakes" but then we'd find more later. I'm still convinced that his Egypt 46s are faked, since they are too similar to his Statue A 219 (a confessed fake.) Not getting hit, and ammo off screen which make it impossible to tell on which difficulty the level is played. Anyways, that's all said and done with now, and we have a policy in place finally that bans anyone completely for having attempted to seriously claim a faked video on the rankings.

He is a Swedish degen and is not related to anyone of note as far as I know. Although it's been speculated that Henning faked videos because he always felt he was in the shadows of others, and needed to break through. So perhaps Viktor is his brother or cousin and we just never knew.

If you want to stream from a (non PS4 XBONE) console, you will need two things; a capture card, and a splitter.

I don't know how 7th generation consoles work (lol) if there is a YRW audio-video input cable, or an HD cable, but either way, the basic setup will be;

Your XBOX 360 goes to a splitter (creating 2 lines of output)

Line 1 goes to Capture Card which then goes to your PC and should be found as a camera (which will then be detected by your broadcasting software [XSplit or OBS.]

Line 2 goes to your TV as usual.

This prevents input lag (if you were to get an output cycle off your computer and then into your TV there would be massive, noticeable lag.)

Maybe I should have put a tutorial or links to tutorials on how to start streaming in the OP. Oh well.

WG if there was any one game outside of Goldeneye you could learn on the top levels what would it be?

I wonder if MS and Sony agreed to help out with increasing their server infrastructure. They're both going to add a lot of streaming pollution with every random streaming to himself and maybe some other guy randomly hopping around looking for a stray penis.

I want to get really good at both Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64, both because I love them a lot, and due to their popularity in the wider speedrun community. It's kind of lucky that the two most popular games are ones I enjoy and am not opposed to running.

I also want to get good at Majora's Mask, Wind Waker and Skyward Sword because those are great games, and I just love Zelda. (Twilight Princess sucks though.)

Most speedunners will say "it's a small hobby, run what you enjoy, etc" but I personally think there's a lot to be said about someone who can adapt to what's popular, prestigious, or otherwise important, and get good at that game. There was a lot of ruckus not long ago about a deal with Machinima.com where races would be sponsored and broadcasted in a "showcase" with a few commentators. I guess people didn't like so much focus being placed on only a few select games. I really have no inclination to ever learn games in series like Mega Man, Castlevania, Metroid, etc, but they're pretty popular too. And if they ever got so popular that playing them was unavoidable, I'd give them a shot.

Goldeneye certainly has had a very high level of competition for a long time, and most guys don't even bother giving it a shot because they know that we've put the same amount of thousands of hours into each LEVEL that they've put into their entire games, and they just can't compete with that. But it's not necessarily what's big or relevant right now. A big goal of my stream was to try to change that, and 007 has seen some more popularity because of it, but it's still not as relevant in speedrunning as OOT or SM64.

So to sum, I'd eventually like to be a top speedrunner at OOT, SM64, MM, WW and SS; and be at least competent at whatever gets too popular and big to ignore.

Skyward Sword seems particularly fun because of the length. If I ever manage a lifestyle where I can do 5+ hour speedruns uninterrupted, it would be really cool. Runs of that length can gain a ton of hype throughout the course of it. Like the ending to a NASCAR race or Olympic marathon.

Long runs are really interesting. I just watched a Skyward Sword 100% the other day and it's a really cool run. The WR is a little less than 9 hours, so super long and like you said most people don't have the time for such. Might not expect to get viewers either, but guys such as Demon, Ennopp and ZFG have gained a pretty big following from their somewhat regular marathon runs.

I'm not exactly sure why GE007 hasn't gotten that popular as a speed game, after all we all sort of did runs when going for the cheats as casuals so many "should" have an interest in it. From what people say something about it is not so viewer friendly, that, and the standard is ridiculously high - with you Elite guys having really solid records for all levels/modes and have to reset after the tiniest mistakes. At a point I have wanted to run it, but it's like you said - it's probably gonna take half a decade to get anywhere near top level

Never really understood how someone could be interested enough in any game to repeat it over and over and over, but watching a pro at a game can be pretty interesting. I watch the speedrun charity marathon whenever I find it on twitch.

Feasel has the best stream on twitch.tv imo, FF1 runs for life. Next are Siglemic/Sinisterwon/Cygher/Adam_ak, then whoever happens to be running whatever NES/SNES game strikes my fancy.

In Feasel's case there are a couple things in his archives where he plays on an emulator going over the planning for the route which is really interesting to me. I blame FF1 being a big part of my childhood, his Zelda 2 planning ones aren't nearly as enticing somehow.
