I find stories like this somewhat funny. Not b/c of the things that were said b/c those comments are obviously ignorant and not necessary.

What's funny to me is how people act surprised or outraged when it happens. Everyone that streams games online has had to deal with those types of comments in their chat.

It's nothing new and it will never go away as long as there's a chat box.

The fact that so many of these people suggest global banning of the most well known emote of a black guy, TriHard, as a way helping stem 'racism' is so hilarious ironic.

Yes, lets just block all images of black people. Racism solved! Thanks SJWs you guy did it!

lol what are you talking about? I have never had anyone say "those types of comments" in my chat in my limited streaming. There are multiple streamers I watch that I've never seen receive those types of comments.

I'm glad everyone was nice to him in person, though I don't quite see what it has to do with this.

During the Twitch ********** of his performance, and the interviews that followed, Miller, who is African-American, was the subject of a torrent of racist abuse on the stream's chat panel. The abuse included hateful language targeting African-Americans, as well as graphic descriptions and imagery.
Quote:
He says he saw it straight after the post-match interview. "I knew it would be bad, but I didn’t think it would be that bad," he says. "I was getting texts from my parents saying, ‘Oh, we saw you on your interview, really good job.' And I was just hoping they saw it in full screen and didn’t see the chat."

But they did see the chat. He says he didn't want to talk about it too much with his family. "We focused on the positive. We just acknowledged that it happened."

...
"I really hope they didn’t watch it at all, because I know they’re into the whole video game community. For me, whatever. It happened. It shouldn’t have happened. It won’t bother me. But for the people who want to support me, who care about me, for them to see that, I can definitely see how that would hurt a lot."
It says people spamming TriHard was just one part of it:

Quote:
One of the emojis being used repeatedly by the racists — an image of a black streamer — was also banned, in an attempt to stem the flow of hate.

"The icon itself isn’t actually offensive," says Miller. "It’s what people were saying with it. But I do think that banning it was a good decision, just because it reduced the racist comments that were going along with it. But I don’t think the icon itself is a problem. It’s the people that are saying other things with it."
If the author, and the Hearthstone player, are both lying about what happened or something, or if he says things like "I can definitely see how that would hurt a lot" (and wishes his family didn't watch, lol?) about people spamming a Trihex emote, that seems weird.

they usually added stuff like TriHard stole my bike or something.

But yeah, its like 100 people spamming out of 50k viewers its not like hes getting whispers of death threats from skinheads.

I find it personally naive to expect anything else from a public chat with tens of thousands of people when its clearly just a very vocal minority that wants attention by trolling.

Arabs get worse spam. The chat actually loved Terrence.

Ohh, so it wasn't just spamming an emote, they were saying racist things?

I seriously didn't expect to get such a NOPE, NOTHING TO SEE HERE, NOT A PROBLEM reaction when I posted that, but I'm glad we could at least reach the understanding that the author and the player weren't inventing this out of thin air.

Anyone who routinely watch twitch should assume that happens because there is no way it wouldn't, so posting about it here seems pretty weird.

Does it strike you as something that should happen?

I mean, I'm certainly glad I posted it given that I learned something from the utterly bizarre reaction it provoked among you all.

it's deplorable but that's human nature and how masses work with anonimity

Many of the people spamming racist stuff arent even racist themselves, they just find ways to trigger as many people as possible and get attention.

You either close twitch chat or you go full fascist mode and overload moderators that bans everyone. Or you accept that humans can be really ****ty and sometimes actually funny. Then when the general public gets a hold of crap like this you shake your head and hope they dont generalize everyone on twitch

You're not gonna get a mass of 50k+ anonymous people to not make " "funny" " comments about everything that happens on screen, be it WutFace for audio problems/ugly person zoom-in, KappaPride for people who say something gay or look effiminate, haHAA spam for when someone seems or sounds socially awkward or there's a cringy moment.

ANELE whenever there's an arab or an explosion/bomb moment, TriHard whenever a black person is on screen.

Then there's people that go the extra mile and add more hateful stuff so they get that delicious attention

I'm not talking about just racist comments. I mean all offensive comments.

There's no way in hell you'll ever convince me that you've never seen offensive comments in 99% of the streams you've watched. I see it all the time and I'm constantly opening new streams looking for someone entertaining to watch.

guys like Trump had some of the tamest friendly chat yet he still went submode only forever I can't remember when but I know he had a lot of autism spam.

if you stream odds are youre gonna get called an autist and a virgin or a cuck (think thats the new trendy insult lately).

Add in homophobic/sexist/racist/fat-if-not-skinny/manlet-if-short flavor if there's something else different and obvious about you

For some streamers, the worst, most offensive comments they get are "you suck at Starcraft". Pretty amazing that you put that on the same level with racist stuff.

With what? 50 viewers?

There's a huge difference with big public streams and personal very small streams with only peopel that actually care about you

Like if there were shows on TV with live comments from 100% unanimous people that pop up without pre-moderation you'd see the foulest things imaginable, its not just the internet or "young nerds" problems

So you've never seen someone say something like...

That move sucked dick.
That move is gay.

Or comments about the way a female character looks. Like she's fat or I bet she swallows?

No comments like that, ever?

100-200. I'm glad we're clearing up these discrepancies though - you could have just said "I_AM_EVIL is wrong that all streamers get nasty, offensive comments" from the start.

What? Of course I have. You're the one claiming it apparently happens all the time and every streamer gets this stuff. Furthermore, there's a difference in intent between someone who says "that move is gay", which is certainly ignorant but not designed to directly offend anyone (assuming the streamer isn't gay), versus spamming racist **** in chat because a black person is on stream, jfc!
