Anyone can attempt qualifying, but what they do from there is dependent on the tournament in question - this one limited to the top 16 qualifiers, the main monthly tournament series has one open qualifier but different tiers of tournaments for the top 16, next 16 etc so you play people of a similar skill level (or, as I'll do next month, people better than you as I hit a PB during qualification). Usually you just play for an hour/90 minutes to record a best score, top 3 scores etc
It's surprisingly watchable, while actually playing needs a fair bit of understanding (e.g. being able to survive on the quickest level if you can't mash buttons really quickly needs knowledge of how the game handles your inputs to be able to move pieces anywhere), it's really easy to understand as a casual as it's not a complex game to get and it's just highest score wins, more or less any day of the week you can find one or more competitive games between similarly skilled players
Yeh you didn't mention it, and it's probably aged quite a bit, but Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters is a very enjoyable documentary film, and helped me understand a bit more about the higher level play.
Don't think I played great but think that I might have got a bit of bad RNG (at least someone in chat said that so I'm taking it), first game we were fairly close but I couldn't get the right pieces to clear back down at all before topping out and the other guy just got enough points to get over the line, second game I topped out early after not getting a long bar or decent spots to burn, second part is at least partially my fault as I should probably build to accommodate easier burns. PAL's such a hugely different game to NTSC though, it's so easy to think that you can get any piece anywhere, which is partially true but only to a certain extent
I've not actually watched Ecstasy of Order, been meaning to but I believe they were talking about doing another run of DVDs at some point so wanting to wait for that. Yeah, the game has moved on quite a lot since then, where as then level 29 was thought to be a kill screen we've now got multiple people that can get to level 30 and beyond, and whereas back then a million points was still seen as a huge milestone, especially in competitive play, the last monthly qualifier had 20+ people get that
Dr.disrespect with 500k viewers live on youtube... still no idea why he left twitch.
I guess he has partnered with youtube?
Anyway I can't get used to watch streams on youtube except nasa and GSL , I have no idea how you find live streams otherwise .

Twitch perma banned him. No reasons have been given or released, still.
I've been watching a lot more of xQc lately, I used to absolutely hate him but he's grown on me and I've genuinely laughed hard at some recent moments. He's been playing a lot of Fall Guys and Among Us lately
I've been memorized watching twitch streamers play the new Microsoft Flight Simulator. I've spent hours watching people fly through crazy amazing scenery. (Grand Canyon, West coast of California, Las Vegas)
Yeah, both are true. There are real actual planes in the game and you can also fly with your friends. I've seen whole flotillas of viewers flying with a streamer. Kind of crazy.
I've noticed that the game is a little unstable. Crashing to the desktop every few hours.
