so the whole reason mech could be considered weak in the past was that while the terran was turtling, zerg could mine out the rest of the map and be cost inefficient because of the resource discrepancy after being up 1-2 bases in endgame, right
so now when i watch GSL it seems kind of a gentlemen's agreement that terran will get their half of the map...but then i see them sit in the middle of the map with their deathballs barely doing anything and zerg doesn't even attempt to expand to any base on terran's side despite having 90 drones and 6k minerals. am i missing something?
Someone had a game, I think against Maru? Maybe it was Dark? Where they tried sneaking some bases on the other guy's side of the map on Blackpink and were reasonably successful until the other guy scouted it.
But yeah, in particular maps like Blackpink and Backwater have these bases on the diagonal edge where it would really behoove Zerg to try mining those out when the Terran is still on 4-5 bases and can't necessarily move out their whole army to attack without taking a big risk in the process.
Now that we're 8 years into SC2, who are we looking at as best player of all time so far? (inspired by artosis alluding to it during GSL):
Can anyone make a case for someone other than Mvp/Innovation/SoS?
I feel like
-Anyone in the WoL/early HOTS days is beaten by Mvp (including legends like NesTea, MC, and MMA)
-Innovation trumps all the "standard and current" KeSPA greats (Zest, Stats, soo, TY, Maru, Rogue, Dark, Classic, herO)
-SoS has it over all the non-standard path players that had super high highs/might have had most of their success in NA/EU (Life, Polt, Rain)
Then among those three it's really hard to pick....gun to my head I'd probably say Innovation>SoS>Mvp. I feel like Mvp is clearly the weakest but this gets into the whole "define GOAT criteria" rabbit hole. Then we have SoS who has 0 GSLs but i'd bet money would be at the bottom of every top player's list of opponents and has a strong collection of tournament wins to his name as well. Then you have innovation who's tied with MvP for most GSLs and who to a lot of people seems to be the mechanically perfect player.
Also interesting would be if you talk about the Brood War concept of bonjwa. Probably to me that would be something along the lines of Mvp, Life, Zest, then maybe innovation?
Reminder that for two expansions the snipe ability was supposed to be anti-spellcaster and did 25 base damage, doubled vs psionic units. In their infinite wisdom Blizzard decided to just make it an outright destroyer of expensive Zerg armies that can just cloak and walk under a ball of anything and shred them, as it does 170 damage against exclusively biological units. They either one or two shot every Zerg unit (well, except Ultras, they need 3) at the massive cost of 50 energy per shot
Random thought: I remember back when Blizzard said they needed to nerf overlord drops in order to make Protoss openers other than stargate viable...and since then, stargate -> phoenix -> oracle -> *insert any of a handful of builds that will kill Zerg if they respond improperly and can't be scouted now that phoenixes have killed their overlords* has become more entrenched as the standard opener in every single PvZ
Pretty good final series. Wouldn't say any games are bad, as it's PvP none of the games are particularly long
Snow seemed pretty shook after losing what was a knife edge game 1, not helping by getting his proxy scouted in time in game 2, sure he got a BO win in game 3 but Rain was outplaying him pretty solidly
Sample size, but Protoss are 5-1 vs Zerg in series in the Ro16:
Solar 2-0 Zest
Solar 0-2 Zest
Soo 1-2 Dear
Rogue 1-2 Dear
Dark 0-2 Classic
Dark 0-2 Trap
And those are the 4 best Zergs in the world. The matchup feels pretty broken in favor of Protoss now that they've figured out this standard metagame where they open phoenix, destroy Zerg's ability to scout, and pick from one of 3-4 followups that can absolutely devastate Zerg if they don't prepare for it correctly and when they can't know which is coming.
I guess Zergs should start mixing in all-ins or something but stargate is the safest opening against rushes, that's why it was the standard opener before Blizzard nerfed ling drops!
Ro8 has one Zerg and the last group is just T/P. gl Rogue, you're our only hope
