I like the casual conversations in the anniversary stream about various players and strategies. I started in like 2011 with SC2, but there's lots of early stuff I missed and I've got next to no BW experience.

lol, I love playing (and beating) guys like this. btw, ravagers is what you're looking for here, once you have your "they can't come on creep" zone set up with spines and stuff then you just bile down their buildings and they're helpless. I'm inclined to take my 2 bases and just build a bigger army than they can as long as I know they're on 1 base, seems like less variance than setting up a potential base trade, but nydus worked out.

So i'm not convinced going pool first in ZvP isn't the best option. I'm getting cannon rushed at least 1/3 of the time and often it's the hyper aggro forge first type that dies to pool first and crushes hatch first. Is my MMR just too low? Wasn't the whole pool vs hatch first macro argument kind of close regardless?

In what way are you losing to cannon rushes? imo, if your natural finishes and that's the first time you see Protoss buildings in your base, you're doing it wrong. I drone scout (which is excessive) so I always see forge first asap (I rally the first drone I make to the other side of the map, which is excessive, but my opponents are Platinum so I can afford to - that gets there right about when I would put my hatch down so I can switch up and go pool first if I scout that I should), but you can also rally your second overlord to your natural (should get there as you put your hatch down) for vision and to know what their probe is up to.

You certainly can go pool first but why give up the economic advantage of hatch first if you don't have to?

I don't drone scout unless I have some reason to believe he's cheesing (he's random, he's several ranks below me, I recognize him as having cheesed before). I send my first overlord to the natural and the second one behind their main. So ya previously when I was losing to cannon rushes, I was only seeing it when my overlord saw an early probe, when my natural finished, or if they placed buildings right next to my building hatchery.

Is it enough advance notice to put your second overlord there so you can see the first pylon going down? Maybe my micro just sucks but I've never been particularly good against cannon rushers when going hatch first.

Yeah. This is the rally path I always set for my 2nd overlord in ZvP (this is Catalyst but you can do the same sort of thing on every map):



It will usually be right over your natural when you place your hatch. You'll always see a probe come in (normal timing is maybe when the overlord is over the entrance and not necessarily over the hatch anymore), and from there you'll see if it does something shady like beeline for behind your natural instead of continuing to your main like normal, and you'll notice if enough time passes where you should have seen it in your main but haven't yet.

You can also be more cautious and send a drone down to follow it (it's not costing you any more than it's costing him to have a probe in your base) or something, but in general this is a good start. And it's not like the cost is that big, it doesn't take the overlord too far out of its path.

From there, if he puts a pylon down, I would generally...
- have 1-2 drones attacking the probe (he'll try to run it around in circles but because he's bad, he'll forget to keep it moving at all times letting you get free shots in and then it will also distract him from placing cannons)
- have 3-4 drones attacking each cannon
- don't bother attacking pylons (except maybe the first one before cannons are placed), they build faster and have more HP/shields

Yes, this obv hurts your mining a lot, but when this process is done and he has no tech (forge first lol) and no expansion and you have two hatches, you're absurdly ahead

I'm trying really hard to get cannon rushed without drone scouting so I can try to have an example of holding it, but the only guy who's rushed me so far (out of like four ZvPs in twelve games, not counting the ZvZs I quit) put his proxy pylon under my first overlord (!!) before I even sent a drone to make my hatch.

I do but I've had no time whatsoever to watch a single minute of this season. I'm at least on a weekend break coming up so maybe I can catch up on it

can someone cliffs what happened while i was gone? kespa pulled funding from the SC2 teams and they all (except jin air) disbanded and went back to brood war, along with the pros? or did the pros leave first?

1. In late 2016, Kespa stopped running Proleague
2. With no Proleague, Korean teams disbanded because they didn't really have anything else going on

I'm not sure what you mean about teams going back to BW - I don't think those teams really exist anymore? (correct me if I'm wrong) I think it's more like...
1. A bunch of players from KT/SKT/Samsung/etc are now teamless
2. Now that they aren't being paid by teams to play SC2, a bunch of them went back to playing BW, probably figuring they could make more money doing that
3. With a bunch of famous BW pros going back to BW, BW tournaments got bigger again

AVILO is somehow on the United States team? More than anything I so, so, so badly want to see him lose his mind and BM someone and call them a hacker or whatever in a major tournament. Please let this happen!!

is 11 spines overkill here? i almost feel dumb asking this vs a 1 base all in but that's like >1500 minerals

- I think making a third early when you know he's on 1 base is too greedy, that $$ is better spent on more queens and droning up your 2 bases
- 4/3 workers on gas in your main!
- probably want to tech up to roach/ravager (or roach/hydra) once you hold the first wave
- once you have all those mutas the #1 way to make this guy ragequit is to just endlessly harass the edges of his base, make him run over to you, run away and go to the other side, make him stim his marines down to 5hp, etc - you were a bid timid with them. Hell, when he attacks your third, just go full basetrade and let him think he can win until you eliminate him by killing all buildings while you have 5 hatches going up around the map, that's a good way to end it.

As far as "is 11 spines overkill" - I mean, not really, especially if you don't have the larva to turn that $$ into units in a meaningful way. When you're on 2 bases and he's on 1, all you have to do to win is not die.

Finally got around to Heart of the Swarm xpac, it was A+, Blizzard is getting much better at narrative.
