I would assume when a competitive game is old, most of the people playing have been playing for a long time and are into it. The fish are more likely to be someone like you coming back from a hiatus rather than someone who's just trying it out.
13 gas (I don't remember off the top of my head when exactly you make it - I want to say like 75 minerals - but ideally the gas is 2/3 done when you start your pool, that's the ideal timing for having 100 gas when pool finishes)
14 overlord, extractor trick a drone
15 (@pool finishing): 3x lings, ling speed
21: baneling nest
Harass with initial lings - I can never get that much done in their drone line and if they went pool first you won't have a lot to do there anyway so I try to take out their natural, which (if successful) will at least stop them from ever outproducing you in lings. When speed finishes you can use it to take a lot of favorable engagements against slow lings obv. By the time your bane nest finishes you probably have like 200 gas and you can make 8 banes and wipe out their main mineral line which effectively ends the game.
I used to do those extremely early ling bane attacks because I hated ZvZ just like everyone else and just wanted to get it over with. Since starting back up though, I've been trying to play a more economic and defensive game. The above build is mostly what I've been losing to. My unit control needs work, and I take way too many losses to the early banes. My few ZvZ wins have all been the games that went beyond 5 mins. I win most often by simply starving my opponents out. The last game of the night yesterday was a ZvZ where I won by shoving 95 banelings down his throat on 5 bases after continually sniping his third and using superior vision to force him to choose between a base race vs muta/lings or going back to defend. A better player could've closed out the game much earlier. Also, a couple Lurkers/Infestors sprinkled into his army would've made me extremely sad.
I haven't lost a ZvT since day one. That's the only reason I don't have a 20% overall winrate atm.
MMR dipped to 3600 before I stopped losing every game.
1v1 matchmaking takes less than 5 seconds to find games, so I'd say it's doing pretty well.
I have only had one repeat opponent in the past couple days of playing. This is more than I can say for Dota2, where I'd sometimes get stuck playing with/against the same 3 cancerous *******s for as many as 4 games in a row.
It says I have only 60 apm and thinks I should be in Gold League. It's probably right.
I faced my first Protoss in days.
Turns out, as long as you have enough banelings, it doesn't matter what army composition they have. This is becoming a pattern, and unsustainable crutch.
This guy tried the same Phoenix bull**** as the Toss on day one, but apparently you just beat mass phoenix with mass zergling. I built an Overlord containment area out of Spores like a full-on Silver league newbie, and pretty much won with pure ling bane. I had a flock of mutas on distraction duty to keep his attention split, but they didn't do much else. Mostly just die slowly to inescapable Phoenix and random Stalkers.
I'm red. The big spike and then equally impressive dip is the morphing and use of a ****load of banelings. I had enough left to take care of his wall, and then it was just a matter of scattering the lings to go to town in his bases. Watching mass phoenix desperately try and lift enough lings to stop the bleeding was pretty entertaining.
This game brought to you by my inability to multitask and thus massive bank of resources, the letter Z, and the number J.
Even just having things like resource/income/supply counts/production tab would greatly improve the viewer experience imo, I've never been able to get that into watching BW with the primitive observing we get. (I'm sure old school fans are like THAT'S THE POINT NOOB)
