does it really matter though? i mean, who logs on to TL and goes 'OH GONNA CLICK THE FIRST THING I SEE OH LOOKS LIKE I'M CLICKING THIS ONE EVENT THING'

i pretty much always look through at least the top 10 streams and i can't imagine i'm that different from the average TL stream viewer

so while it may be 'unfair' i don't see it as that big of a problem

It's not a big problem but i am with goofy that it's douchey and that it shouldn't be allowed.

A lot of people don't watch streamers only events and whilst they will be unlikely to watch desbro it is definitely advertising his stream more prominently than it deserves.

we may act differently when we post (hopefully you think so) but i can't imagine our decisions are that different when it comes to what streams we watch

does anyone else think of this guy every time someone says Desbro

I'm with goofy on this one. He shouldn't be submitting an event that is nothing more than a random coaching gig (regardless of who the student is) to be featured on par with tournaments and talk shows. That kind of shameless self-promotion just screams "douche" to me most of the time and I'm not a fan.

Part of the blame lies with Team Liquid too. Their guidelines to submitting events basically say "this **** better be worth highlighting", and Desrow coaching Smix does not qualify.

devil's advocate- there were no other featured calendar events going on at the time the screenshot was taken. who gives a ****? is it just that the potential to clutter up the calendar is there? is it the principle/intent rather than the actual effect that it has? otherwise, i don't see the difference. if it is the intent, doesn't it just honestly boil down to the fact that desrow isn't a "popular" personality?

i'm confused. i'm one of the people that gets riled up at the douchey/self-promoting things as much as anyone (e.g., basically why i started disliking day9 a while ago), but this doesn't affect me at all. what am i missing?

I think this just means we should have held our 2p2 tournaments as featured TL events.

But the calendar wouldn't be empty if every other streamer had as little shame as desrow and invented some ****ty little "event" for their stream to happen to be airing all the time. goofyballer drinks fine beers and plays badly on ladder, every Friday at 12am! TO THE TL CALENDAR!

lol you guys are too much fun, I for one don't watch Spyte cause she's a woman. She talks about what she is doing, she listens to a lot of good music and that's good enough for me. I also love the ****talk on how she'll never improve etc. She is literally in one of the best possible situations for a NA player right now in a team house, but nah she obv isn't smart or talented enough to ever make it!

I have no interest in her physically since she is across the world and if I wanted to get turned on by a woman i'd watch porn. No idea why all this crying over other peoples success is so previlant in this thread.

I have tried watching good korean players but it's just completely pointless. They never comment on anything they do, they have the music taste of a 12 year old girl and a lot of their strategies is not usable for me since I have 1/4th of their APM and could not multitask like them.

Post chock full of strawmen and blatant falsehoods.

Right, you like Spyte, but don't mischaracterise the discussion please.

can someone explain to me what the **** tempo is when people use it during casts and whether it actually means anything important or if it's just people trying to sound sophisticated

More scumbaggy self-promotion: Hui frequently leaves his stream on after going to bed (with a ****ing "good night, thanks for watching" splash screen at that) so he can continue to clutter up the stream index full of other people you could actually watch play the game

If you mean the "tempo-based play" bull**** casters spout occasionally, it basically means controlling the pace of the game, generally accelerating it. Most non-Protoss strategies do this to some extent, I think. Probably one of the most obvious is Bomber's TvZ parade pushes. Your strength comes from never letting your opponent breathe, rather than crafting some kind of ultimate unit composition. You beat on your opponent mercilessly, gaining small advantages each time until eventually you've gone from being one of those little waves lapping against the shore to a giant tsunami that your opponent can no longer hold back. IDK if you play LoL at all, but it's basically the exact same thing as "snowballing".

Tempo should mean, controlling the play, as in who is defending or who is attacking and where, who has map control etc. But they often use it randomly because they heard someone else use it.

thanks, guys.

side comment: anyone else feel like the info shown on screen should always show upgrades (can't remember which tournament did this, but it might have been MLG..)? i feel like this is something that heavily affects outcomes of fights and is something that people don't pay nearly enough attention to. the countdown on the right bottom of the screen of upgrades finishing is cool, but i feel that the former suggestion would be much more beneficial to commentators (especially since apparently the preview PC idea was nixed at GOM...)

so i've been watching GSL and listening really closely to wolf's casting to see if i can pick up anything that apparently makes him the WORST CASTER OAT

so far he has called a few fights wrong (especially when it comes to how he loves to talk about player A trading with player B when in fact player A is doing badly) and he forgets about some stuff that is pretty important

but his banter with artosis is really good, and his calling of fights is in no way worse at all than that of many of the casters ranked above him

i'm calling bull

Calling of fights alone is something where it's so easy to differentiate casters. Gretorp is wrong basically always. Tasteless is wrong a lot.
Starcraft 2 (GAME IS NOW FREE!) Quote
03-07-2014 , 09:39 PM
the other subtle but important thing to consider is that there's a notable difference between hyping up a fight and calling a fight. gretorp or tasteless can say "AND HERE COME THE BANELINGS" when the banelings are clearly not going to make a dent into the thor/hellbat/tank army that terran has, but it's still the job of the commentator to make the fight seem as interesting as possible. look at other sports (i'm going to use baseball as an example because it's the only major sport where it's impossible to run out the clock to win, similar to starcraft)- you don't see the elite announcers saying "well, here's the 0-2 pitch with 2 outs in the ninth down 7-0 which has no chance of affecting the outcome of the game"...you hear all the hype that you'd normally hear.

this was not meant at all to discount the fact that there are multiple casters who routinely call fights incorrectly...it's just providing an alternate opinion as to why some casters might appear to be incorrect more frequently than they are. in terms of actual sort term EV from casting, might it actually be close to neutral EV (and possibly even +EV) to call things in the opposite direction just from the perspective of it's 'exciting' no matter what?

It's not just calling fights, its builds and general game knowledge. Wolf makes it clear he doesn't know whats going on. Gretorp may routinely call fights wrong but in terms of understanding the match ups and discussing game considerations he is light years ahead of wolf. There is a reason the pros think Wolf sucks as well as the majority of people who watch GSL regularly.

Basically calling fights is such a minor minor thing but some people seem to think its the be all and end all of knowledge or something. There is so much micro involved and various other factors that it can be difficult to call a fight one way or the other before it happens unless its obvious. It just doesn't matter much. But not understanding why player X might do Y consistently, or not understanding someones strategy 10 minutes into the game is a hell of a lot worse but some people don't pick up on it.

i would bet a fair amount that wolf knows more than gretorp does but obviously this is unprovable
