I used to love that build in WOL... But he did it wrong. Why 7 pool if you're going to make an overlord?

7 pool, drone to 8, double extractor trick to make 8 lings, have 2 drones make 2 spine crawlers and cancel micro until the lings get there, pray he doesn't pull drones in time and win game in < 4 minutes. **** zvz.

I feel like it's easy to hold early pool shenanigans as long as you go pool first yourself. In this case I scouted his lings popping and insta started lings and spines and baneling nest (didn't even end up using) when my pool finished; he got two spines up, but so did I, so he wasn't able to do much.

Against a better opponent you're going to lose if you build a baneling nest in the face of a 7 pool spine rush.

That said, based off his build order, he clearly had no idea what he was doing.

Keep in mind I'm playing at a level where I (and I imagine the people I'm playing against) don't know how to identify a 6 pool vs a 10 pool, there is simply "cheese pools" and "normal pools".

I also don't know how to tell if I'm being proxy raxed by a Terran or if he's just going for a CC first and hasn't put it down yet. That's resulted in some fun games.

Baneling nest was a big error here.

There fairly standard timings for these, you will know its a 6 pool by how friggin early the lings are coming. 10 pool isn't really cheese, its just an aggressive build order, its not all in, you can still win if you don't do that much damage. 10 pool baneling is a different story.

If he hasn't put down his CC yet, then you are being proxy raxed . When do you send your scouting drone?

idk I went 15 gas 15 pool (and didn't bother expanding when 6 lings passed my scouting drone on his way into the base) and had all this gas and figured I should spend it on something. I already had made lings and two spines so I figured I could spare it and didn't necessarily know it was a spine rush, for all I knew a queen was making back home and more floods of lings were coming.

Given how much you've played, being able to look at the Terran's base when he has no barracks building and decide whether he has cut SCVs is something you should be able to do intuitively...of course you could take the time to learn the exact # of SCVs he should have at what point, but that takes time and is risky. What always ****s me up is when he does the eco 2rax (cutting no SCVs) where the second one is somewhat proxied.

There's a huge difference in what the Terran has going CC first vs going proxy 11/11. I just tested this out on Bel'Shir. If you scout at 13, you'll reasonably get into the Terran's main (and be able to see what's going on) at around 2:40.

FWIW, around 2:25 is when I had 400 minerals to build my 15 cc on the low ground. This is what my mineral line looked like at 2:40 (when the Zerg is presumably scouting my base):

You see the difference, right? Just look at how many SCVs are paired in the first vs the second example. Even if that doesn't work, this scouting timing is right after you've put down your hatch and before you get your pool- just spend a second or two counting, while making drones using hotkeys.

And yea I know I said that learning correct SCV counts takes time but then advocate you counting the SCVs in game but I realized that it isn't that hard. If he's got around 14 SCVs, it means he's at 15-16 supply and he hasn't cut anything...if he has 10-11...well, you know what that means.

Most people don't drone scout in ZvZ (because normal overlord paths will see early pool lings coming to you anyway), but if it's something that gives you peace of mind, go for it.

When you say "I had all this gas", I assume you mean that you pulled out of gas as soon as you saw the lings coming, right? lings+spines+queen are expensive, especially since you'll likely be microing your drones and losing a fair amount of mining time once he gets into your main. Keeping drones in gas longer than necessary=bad.

Also you should definitely get used to sending a drone around the edges of your base the second you know that an early pool is coming. I believe 4 drones is the correct number to pull to attack a single spine (but I could be wrong).
