Had a ZvT today where I was actually pretty happy with my macro. At 9:20 was on 62 drones on 3 bases, eleven mutas out at 11:00, on 185 supply of ling/muta/bane at 13:20.


I lost to a minefield push and it wasn't close.

I think maybe next time I'll try getting 5-10 defensive swarm hosts against that kind of attack; the biggest problem I feel with my ability to respond to it now is that the Terran gets to slowly push forward and I have no way to really push him back as long as he doesn't do a ****ty job of moving his mines around, it's basically a no-Zerglings-allowed zone. Having some free units that can push into his bio and do damage and force him to either retreat or attack sooner than he would otherwise like might give me a better position in the engagement.

In a defensive capacity, the ranged attack/enduring locust upgrades aren't that important so I don't think it would really matter that I'm focusing on melee.

It comes down to engagements. The terran with mines can be soooo cost effective vs A move swarm of zerg units. You need to flank. Perferably from like 3 sides. If you do this the mines will be nowhere near as effective as they will be blowing up their own units etc. Also sending in small packs of lings to set off mines when appropriate is a must. But yeah its hard.

My latest ZvT adventure. General advice? Obv macro better etc etc but I mean more high level stuff. I made a point of putting down lots of static defense around my bases to help with drops and yet still kept losing bases to them anyway. Obviously I'm wayyyyy ahead after his opening...I prob could have won the game there, but didn't really want to wind up all-in myself so I wanted to keep droning behind attacks, and once I saw the widow mine I was thinking ok, when ahead get more ahead, step back and tech up. Naturally that's easier said than done.

why early game when you have 2k mins and 2 hatches dont you double expo or at least macro hatch?

4 bases 46 workers vs a terrible terran. 0 counter attacks despite him having 1 mine ever at his third which you managed to catch with every muta at once early. 3/3 vs 1/1 for like 5 mins, never trading while he has a limited economy
2.5k/4k 35 larvae with 110 supply and 45 drones
even once you crush him you have 2k2k and 20 larvae and arent making anything

just alt tabbed any time i noticed something that seemed really bad. attacking zero times, 1 counter attack when he should have never gotten a 3rd, letting him go from 1/1 to 3/2 while you have 3/3 with no attacks, never having 50 drones lol...

if you dont wanna hear "macro better" then maybe you should macro better =X

yeah didnt mean that to be aggro if it sounded that way. also, scouting when he pushes out is huge and only costs 1 ling or just burrow something if you can. then swinging around with lings/mutas/both while you are macro-ing, stuff like that keeps him at home all the time. im pretty sure you should have won off the opening bust if you rallied faster or made more banes and didnt let him get into that choke.

Here's the problem with macro for me:

ZvT macro, where you're making mostly lings which cost 50 minerals and no gas and take 1 supply, is very different from ZvP or ZvZ macro where you're making mostly roaches/hydras/whatever that cost 75/25 or 100/50 and take 2 supply. And I can open a custom game with no opponent and saturate 3 bases and max out on ling/bane/muta by 14 minutes or whatever, but then in a real game Terran attacks you with marines or hellions or hellbat drops or whatever and it's just not the same type of environment that you'd been practicing your macro in. Lastly, you only get to actually play a ZvT in one out of every three ladder games, so it's twice as hard to develop the kind of muscle memory you'd like to have in that situation unless you want to tank your unranked MMR by quitting every game vs Z/P and wind up playing crappier Terran opponents.

So, until I can develop that muscle memory (and I think it is something that just improves with time and you can't simply "fix" overnight), it's helpful to know other things I can do better. Counterattacking is an example, I definitely should have done that more after taking out his army.

hmm maybe cause terran is always same composition for the most part ive never felt that, but as soon as i start losing units i remake as soon as possible. 2 aaaaaaaaaaaa while running or between kiting isnt that tough so just practice 4szzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz or w.e. i think its better to lose a game having the wrong composition than losing a game because you just have no units

somehow i almost just posted this in the wrong thread on an entirely different tab on chrome 0.o

Oh man. Seems like you had super FPS with your micro, you spent so much time running around and taking hits from his drones while not doing damage in return.

How tight are you build orders?

I used to plan stuff out with trees up to like 10 minutes and just run it over and over and over until I got as close as I could to optimal. I think the more you stick to a build and focus on shaving time the better your macro gets. I knew my windows for my blink build or my 4 gate build and I knew the 0-2 second windows I had to hit in order to have it work.

The best analogy I can come up with is to just solve a simpler problem first. Reduce the number of options you have and make it a familiar situation. Pick a build order and just get better and faster until you can't improve anymore. Then when you have to start branching out, the mechanics will be there.

You can get to masters ignoring your opponent.
