In today's edition of "bronze league trolling on a silver account" (my smurf got promoted and even after losing 34 OUT OF 35 STRAIGHT GAMES ON PURPOSE THEY WOULDN'T DEMOTE ME), I thought it would be fun to try a build where I build nothing but brood lords. My opponent chose an interesting build, the 8 overlord 8 pool, causing him to get early lings out; so, the purity of my plan was sacrificed when I had to build about 10 lings (after going hatch first) to hold off his attack. I then built a spine wall blocking off the natural which thwarted two more zergling attacks while I banked dat gas.

Fifteen minutes later:

You don't particularly get demoted because you lose a ton. To start this season I quit out of at least 50 some games and I'm still showing in Platinum league even though I'm playing Bronze players.

The MMR is like a moving average, so over time that average has to smooth out. If you lose 50 games, but then go back and start winning every game (my record this season is 7-1 with Terran!!) it'll just be seen as a wild swing and the system won't know where to put you yet. You will still play bad players, but your league won't change.

You'll have to balance winning with losing for it to believe that you belong in Bronze again.

And just to make this longer, the #1 guy in my league was pretty much winning every game and I asked him why he didn't get promoted yet. He told me he quit out of a ton of games just for fun and after it didn't demote him, he said, "f it" and went back to winning. Only after around 40-50 wins he was just getting back to playing his real skill level. And after 130 some wins as of last night, he was still Platinum.

It's not about massive losing steaks to get demoted. I believe that losing 4-5 games in a row and then winning one. Repeat a ton, it'll move you down. The matchmaking has a confidence buffer and it has to be at a, certain level before it ever promotes you in the first place. You have to lower that bar convincingly before it will drop you.

People would tank their rank to get easy achievements, that had to leave hundreds upon hundreds of games to get demoted. Once you dropped, you'll keep going down faster.
