I love charts, tables, and especially graphs, and used to joke that poker was just an excuse to play with excel. I have my own records on top of PT databases.

To the left is an automated percentage of my WR w/ each race. At the bottom I have a messy raw data table. I type in the current W/L with each race after each match and it'll automatically update the percentage wins for the total upleft, as well as a graph of racial WR not shown here.

To the right is a standard table showing the best I've done as each race against each race. What's not shown here is that it's color coded by league (I decided to let black be plat) and there will actually be other colors on there if/when I take down non-platinum villains that aren't doing their placement matches. I can also click on the match-up and it'll give the name of the defeated villain for fun. All this must be entered manually, but I suspect the frequency at which I break my own records will bottom out soon enough.

My 1v1 history is still incredibly shallow so it wasn't that hard to research. I spend more time talking about 1v1 strat than I do playing 1v1. When I do play it's been achievement whoring co-op or league teams. I'm like an over rolled fish wondering if he should move from $10-$25NL. And there isn't even money at risk!

11!

I'm taking the plunge and getting used to the 1v1 style.
Now if only I could win.

So I've heard conflicting reports that if I keep losing I'll get demoted right? Please? I'll come back to plat league when I'm ready.

Do I have to win 1 before it decides? That seems to be a fad.

Why would you want to be demoted?

Something I just thought of...Are there limited places for each League? Let's say a certain % in Diamond/Platinum/etc. so that if you are just terrible, you'll get bumped? Or do they just keep adding more and more once they have enough to fill another division?

I saw that the Grand Masters/Masters league will be the elite few. It would be cool if it was like Halo where if you stopped playing or started losing, you'd get bumped quickly. That way you always had something to work towards. I think it would be cool that way with the other leagues as well, if you shifted around a lot so that you can't just get into Diamond and then sit there with a 20-10 record, like some people do. As long as you keep playing your best you'll always be right where you belong.

Being in platinum league because I slaughtered 4 people who just bought the game, which includes 1 cannon rush because I had no idea what to do with protoss (I just can't pull it off now) and then barely defeating 1 platinum player with my best race in my placement matches isn't an indication that I'm platinum. My matches since placement have gone DDDPDPGGGSGB. I almost beat the gold at the end, and supply blocked myself playing the bronze. That's embarrassing. I did get the feat of strength and 5 streak solo, 2 things I thought I'd never get, so it's not a total loss.

My macro is psychologically broke 1v1. Supply blocking, workers stop being produced, forgeting reinforcement production during fights, letting resources pile up because I'm waiting to finish something else. This happens much less frequently in other forms of the game. Team play, co-op, campaign I feel clarity with my micro and macro. 1v1 I just fail.

It's like I'm playing NLHE (coming from LHE) where everything is similar but just not the same. I'm certain I'm better at NLHE (actually coming from LHE) than I am at SC2 1v1 ladder.

After reflecting against my play versus that spectrum of enemies, I suspect I'm high silver to mid gold, assuming I can fix my errors which are habitually correct in other forms of the game.

On a different note, why would they put 2 people in placement matches against each other? let's shrink the sample size BELOW 5!

You will get demoted eventually, but it takes a ton of losses

I don't know your experience with SC2, but you seem knowledgeable. You've probably seen my posts about how I'm scared to play MP because I feel like I'll be overmatched every game. That's just not true. Even if you are in Diamond, you're going to play against people who are equal to your skill. If you're playing against people in Bronze, that means your hidden ranking is pretty low, so they are trying to find a fit for you. League doesn't really matter in the bigger picture.

I've never heard of anyone getting demoted, but if someone has, I'd like to know who.

Sometimes I look through my friend's list and their ladder placement. I'm always intrigued by people who are in Bronze and have played over 200 games. I would think that eventually they'd get moved up. I remember in beta I initially got placed in Copper. They patched a few things, wiped the leaderboards, and then I got into Silver after getting rid of Copper. I'd personally like to be in Bronze just so I can work my way up and get promoted. If I get placed in Platinum right away, then I'm either struggling to get to Diamond, or I'm just stuck in Platinum. I never get that feeling that I have progressed, getting promoted through each league. It would be cool to go from Bronze to Silver, Silver to Gold, Gold to Platinum. It's a rewarding feeling.

I feel like I might be stuck in Gold for awhile, but just because that seems to be where I belong. At least I have Platinum to work towards so there will be some semblance of a reward. Anyone know when the ladder will be reset?

But anyways, you have a hidden ranking that determines who you play against. You were probably doing really well, or at least losing to people who should have beaten you so the game expected you to lose, meaning that your hidden ranking didn't decrease by much. But once you see that you're playing against Golds/Silvers/Bronzes, you should be beating them.

If you ever do get demoted, let me know!

EDIT: I also want to add that you're probably going to be 50% so don't put too much weight on wins and losses. Even most of the very best players are near 50-55%. Sorting by wins, most people are right at 50% so the law of large numbers comes into play, and that is people who have over 6,000 - 7,000 games played.

Zeldark - you should add yourself to the 2p2 leaderboards.

Just for the sake of experimenting, I tanked my friend's account who was in plat. It took about 45 straight losses, and he went straight from plat to copper.

But yeah, I think it's a lot harder to get demoted than promoted. Just another facet of how the ranking system is more about making people "feel like they are progressing" than actually a legitimate indicator of skill level.

its going to take longer to get demoted if you're purposely losing a ton of games in a row unless you're starting in silver, maybe gold. the computer won't place you in a new league until your MMR stabilizes within a certain range. however if you're legitimately deserving of a demotion, it will come more quickly since the computer will match you with players of equal skill and your MMR will stabilize more quickly. i have been demoted twice while i was trying to learn terran/protoss and playing random. did not take very long either time. didn't take long for me to get promoted either after i started playing zerg again.

-12 game losing streak ended
-1st victory after placement
-First legit protoss win (cannon rush didn't count)
-First ranked terran defeated

Victim is 1608 silver. If you're going to wall off, raise your depot dood.
Now I am SIX platinum.

Balla

In retrospect, if I cared about my winrate I probably would pick a race. Random is horrible because you have to see all maps from 3 different perspectives, get used to 9 default build orders for the race matchups. I want the raw wins for the achievements though! I'm such an achievement whore. I could never pick a race and then miss out on 2/3 of the game. And I can objectively assess OP builds instead of being biased

Ship it! Rank 20 Silver today... tomorrow the world!

Random Fact: Half of my games I've rolled Toss, my weakest race.

You know that who you get matched up against has nothing to do with your league or with your ladder points, right?

Zeldark - why not just stick to a certain race for like 20 games and then switch? Get good with one, get used to the builds, work on them, etc. then switch. That is much easier than playing all 3 at the same time because then people like me who haven't played this game for over 4 months can beat you.
