Sup peeps, let's talk about Protoss.

So, what's the theory behind when and why you warp in units? It seems pretty standard to build loads of warpgates (like, 3 on one base if you aren't going all-in, up to 8 on two bases), even to the point that your economy can't support it if you were to do constant warp-ins - like, 8 gates would allow you to warp in ~16 stalkers per minute, at a cost of 2k minerals and 800 gas, which is more than you can even mine in a minute, let alone when also trying to work in probes, pylons, robo units, tech, etc. So presumably you aren't building gates with the intention of constantly keeping them busy. Why is that? With Terran I find myself generally going up to 5 rax off 2 bases which I can keep cranking out units, and then when I get close to maxing I'll start building a lot more barracks to allow me to replenish my army after fighting or whatever (and because I'm piling up resources), but with Protoss it seems that process starts quite a bit earlier, and I'm not quite sure why.

I can't think of a time I'd ever build 3 gates on one base or 8 on 2 unless I'm all in-ing.

3 Gates are super std?(3 Gate - Robo) But when are you 1 basing these days anyways. 8 gateways are allin-ish, it should be like 6-7 Gate Robo normally. And later on you build gates when you are maxed out, normally I go up to 16-20 Gates, dunno the right number as you need to be good at chronoboosting too.

You warp-in units when you have the money for it.

What build/scenario meets the following qualities:

(1) 1 base with 3 gateways (+ possibly robo)
(2) Not all in
(3) Better than a build with a quicker expand and fewer gateways

I haven't built 3 gates on one base outside of PvP in I don't even remember how long. Or are you confirming my point? I'm confused.

Do you guys think scouting becomes more or less important the better you get?

I'm watching a replay of Taeja vs Losira from Taeja's perspective to see how he scouts and what he does in response to the info he has, and shockingly I'm up to 14 mins in this game and he has zero information about his opponent's tech. He spotted Losira putting down a 3rd base at 4 minutes and he hasn't scouted any of the Zerg base since then, except to poke into the main with a banshee, see a Lair morphing (didn't see any tech buildings), and leave. He hasn't seen any units besides speedlings and queens. Is he just, like, so good that he doesn't need to see into Losira's base to know exactly what he's doing? So good that he doesn't care what Losira is doing?

Edit: Finally at 19:00 Losira shows up in the center of the map with brood lords (he showed infestors too a few minutes before), which Taeja is fairly unprepared for, only having 6 vikings and no thors (he immediately starts 6 vikings and 3 thors, which is as many as he can make at once), and he has to retreat. This is why we scout, yeah?

Yeah well I said if you are 1 basing than 3 gates are std. because obviously you can support them with your eco, but you are not 1 basing nowadays. I can`t remember a game I was 1basing that isn`t older than 1.5years tbh.

I think it`s much more important.

Obviously it depends on the matchup, I`m not a TvZ-Expert but I guess that the Metagame is pretty much that far that you don`t need to scout a whole lot in TvZ it`s Marine/Tank anyways.

In PvZ-Scouting is crucial for example. Hitting the timeingwindows before greater spire are so important. Or from the Zergperspective to know how long you can drone, or knowing that a immortalsentrypush is coming or a blinkallin and stuff.

With scouting, its not so much seeing what he's doing, its seeing what he isnt doing. Seeing a fast 3rd means: No quick lair tech builds. So no mutas until at least 13 min or so. The banshee seeing his lair timing gives him an internal clock as to when lair tech units will be on the map as well. I cant comment on exactly what taeja was thinking/doing, but theres probably alot of metagame and history with losira and he knows generally how he plays.

Theres also a significant possibility that taeja just didnt scout well that game and everything you said was true.

Scouting becomes more important the better you get, if for no other reason than the better player should always be scouting more, especially if both players know who that is. If you think you're the better player, you should be scouting religiously because the only likely way for you to lose the game is to fail to scout something important.

IDK about the mentioned game either, but it seems likely that IHA is right, and either Taeja just didn't scout well in that particular game, or has a lot of history with Losira. Realistically, it's probably both.

However, scouting doesn't matter if it won't change what you're doing. Again, without seeing the game, it's possible Taeja just had no plans to deviate from his original gameplan. This seems unlikely, since the concept is most commonly applied w.r.t worker scouting at the start of a game. For example, I never drone scout, ever, in any match-up because I'm never going to be changing what I'm doing. Nothing I could possibly see would make me deviate my build before lings pop that I can scout with. Maybe Taeja just had his build mapped out that far in advance.

Variance: good stats?

Since playing 2on2 more I flamed so much people because they are all so bad, especially the decisionmaking, I get really really really mad playing 2on2. Prime examples are opponents ZZ, ally goes Hatch first. I open Forge with the intend to Fe, ally goes 1 Gate Expo and takes the Expo I wanted to take.
