I wouldn't call him "beta as ****" like some posters there, mostly cause I don't talk like that, but it's still pretty embarrassing.

Having said that, played 11 matches in the past two days. Going pretty pretty pretty pretty good.

I guess my MMR is finally where it should be, because I'm on a nice little 3 game winning streak against droolers.

The last guy I played was something special. He was protoss and brought his scouting drone in.......and then built like 6 pylons, a forge, and an assimilator, all at about 12 food. I was just getting my first marine out, and since I mentioned how much forward pylons from Protoss terrify me I was FREAKING OUT and pulling all my SCVs to attack the pylons...nevermind that he needs a cybernetics core and warpgates before he can take advantage of them. Anyway, I finally got rid of them all (and walled off my base) and figured that I must have a solid lead given 1k minerals he blew on all that stuff, so I just focused on building lots of units. When I finally felt safe venturing out of my base again he'd put like three cannons, a cybernetics core (wtf??), and a gateway all down the ramp from my nat; I took them out with minimal losses by focusing on the pylons, and then he'd also planted an expansion where my 3rd would go (again, wtf??) which had no defenses other than 4 cannons. Like, up to this point he'd built a total of 2 zealots.

Units lost tab: 3900 in resources for him, 875 for me.

Took that out, tried to macro well, when I showed up at his base he had 2-3 colossi, 3 void rays, and 2 zealots, which went down fairly quickly vs my ~40 unit army of mixed marines/marauders + 7 medivacs. First win vs. Protoss!

Funny thing is the guy plays the game a lot - when I look at the career finishes of most people I've played lately, they only show up in the last couple seasons if at all. This guy finished bronze every single season.

Does anyone else punch themselves repeatedly in the face when on tilt? Or is that just me?

I think I'm going to give the game another try.

I'm all raged out now and I can move forward having learned from my mistakes.

And presumably some time from now, after I have forgotten the mistakes of the past, I will have another major anger episode and the cycle repeats. But it will be fine because what doesn't kill me only makes me (and my face) stronger.

it's one thing to rage in the moment. we all do that. me especially. i use this thread as a live rageblog when im having a ladder tilt session as you all know.

it's another thing to rage in the moment and destroy something as a result, but occasionally that happens with online poker. (i have never had that happen with sc2, but i guess it could for some people).

it's yet another thing to have the tilt set in for a long time over sc2. that's not good unless there are other mitigating factors in life causing it!

one of the best ways to deal with "not having fun" cause of losing in sc2 is to get a smurf. i love having my smurf. i keep its mmr suppressed by playing drunk on it and/or getting on and just doing really silly troll stats every 3rd or 4th game or so. lets me play relaxed but still refine some skills.

also great for coming back off a layoff, like i am now.

I don't know about getting a smurf. It's ****ing pathetic to get a low MMR account so I can get easy wins to feel good about myself.

Clearly I need to reassess why I play the game. If its to just get wins then the best thing to do is intentionally lose games to keep my MMR low and get easy wins. Clearly that is pathetic though, so the goal of just playing to get wins is pathetic. So I shouldn't be doing something to enable that mentality. Hence I shouldn't get a smurf.

The question is, how do I approach the game in a way that is challenging, interesting, and not rage inducing?

remind yourself that the game has absolutely no impact on the rest of your life, and that the only reason youre playing it is because you enjoy it.

It obviously has impact on the rest of my life, even if it is purely for entertainment.

This approach of making the game seem unimportant makes me uninterested in playing it.

Well maybe you don't view it that way, but for some reason I do.

I think on some level I'm afraid that if I start smurfing for easy wins I will encounter an existential dilemma, where I question whether I should be trying to overcome genuine challenges or instead tricking myself into a false sense of achievement. If the latter is correct then I should quit Starcraft entirely and start playing WoW or Diablo 3 (along with making friends with people who are generally worse than me at everything).

You can't win every game. You can't win every game in which you are more skilled than your opponent.

It sucks to make mistakes, but just learn from them. If you can shift your thinking from individual games or sessions to big picture it will be a lot more satisfying. Especially because you can make the argument that you might be better off with a lower win percentage long term if your goal is to get better.

Maybe try to find someone who is equally skilled/slightly better and just run customs over and over. Like play 30 games in a row same strategies just to practice. You might find that a bit easier to deal with.

I rage a ton when I lose, but it's mostly at myself. I hate losing, but I can deal with it as long as I get something from it. You should never feel like you don't have room to improve.

Also I see nothing wrong with smurfing. It's especially helpful for me now that my accounts are reset because I would have never been competitive at my old mmr after having not played in so long.

yea if i had started at my old mmr after a month+ break i'd get raped. checked the last 5 guys i played or so and all finished top 8 if they were active. that would be a thrashing.

I rage pretty hard when I lose at Call of Duty but I've felt fairly zen about my SC2 losses so far, I guess it's feeling like I should win most/all of the time at CoD and knowing I'm bad at this
