Think about how long it took them to remove close spawns on Metal/Shattered

Just bet Roy $500 that I'll be in Masters league by March 31st, 2013. I'm ALMOST in gold league currently.

so right after i had a huge losing streak vs protoss.....
tonight ive played 5 games so far. all vs protoss. i am 4-1 and hella happy. the last game i played was insane. was on metropolis. he FFE and i got fast 3rd. he attacked with just a bunch of gates and i couldnt defend my 3rd but turtled up and defended my natural for a long time. i eventually got enough to do a ling runby while i defended and it did damage, then a few minutes later i do another one and im able to defend and i ship the gg.

im top 8 plat for the first time after being like 12-30 foreverrrrrrrrr. feel that diamond coming up!

Gonna try to get a comp to play SC2 on, just moved so only have laptop atm. Am currently playing WC3 and Aoe2 to tide me over. Might pick up a second hand one or something as I CBA shelling out for a new gaming rig and spending the equivalent of a small car.

What do you guys recommend I need in terms of:

CPU
Memory
Graphics Card

?

Blizzard recommend :

PC Minimum System Requirements*:

Windows® XP/Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 (Updated with the latest Service Packs) with DirectX® 9.0c
2.6 GHz Pentium® IV or equivalent AMD Athlon® processor
128 MB PCIe NVIDIA® GeForce® 6600 GT or ATI Radeon® 9800 PRO video card or better
12 GB available HD space
1 GB RAM (1.5 GB required for Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 users)
DVD-ROM drive
Broadband Internet connection
1024X720 minimum display resolution

PC Recommended Specifications:

Windows Vista®/Windows® 7
Dual Core 2.4Ghz Processor
2 GB RAM
512 MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GTX or ATI Radeon® HD 3870 or better

But previously my comp had below the minimum graphics card but the recommended processor speed and memory, and worked fine on low settings.

Seems like free money assuming you put in a bit of effort.

If all else fails you can just switch to protoss and 4gate

What sort of volume would he have to put in to get to masters?

Depends on how hard he works improving, I guess, but it's easily doable in a year (especially considering motivation shouldn't be a problem with $500 on the line). Honestly, he could probably win the bet if he had to do it by May 31st with a moderate amount of effort at worst. Betting if he could make GM would have been much more interesting.

If he reads teamliquid and looks up optimal builds/studies replays then it shouldn't really be too difficult. With that being said, I have a friend that is platinum right now who doesn't utilize hotkeys well (doesn't control group his army) and doesn't read teamliquid or think about why he loses games and I doubt he will ever get to masters unless he changes the way he thinks about the game. (Right now he just thinks the main way to get better is to play a ton of 1v1s where he just makes the same mistakes over and over).

Getting in GM has a lot of variance in itself, given the fact that Blizzard still havent fixed GM yet.

Taking a break from HoN, looking for some practice partners to start a bit of 1v1? I'm probably plat-diamond level, I watch GSL but haven't played 1v1 in over a year.

i don't think it's necessary to get coaching in order to reach masters. you just need to play a decent amount and make sure that you understand a few builds/the situations when you're doing them. i think if you learn a few builds (maybe 3 builds per race matchup), practice them adequately (go through simulators or just straight against computers to learn the EXACT timings), and then put them into application (play enough ladder until you know how to play against general situations), you'll succeed.

Hmm it depends really, on the difference various prices would make. But tbh I wouldn't want to spend anymore than about £300 max. That's base unit only don't need monitor etc. More than willing to build my own or even get a second hand one as long as it was working properly had Windows 7 etc.

This is not easy but it's not that hard either and he has 11 months to do it as well.

Hmm, I think I have a really good understanding of situations- its my execution that is really lacking in relation to the rest of my game. I almost always know what I "should" be doing, but I often struggle for whatever reason to do that.

Also, I play all three races. That can't help, right? Should I switch ( I consider Zerg to be my main)?

If you piece it together win7, purchased legally, at it's cheapest is something like $70. So not leaving your self to much room there.
