Recently I have been losing to almost every protoss i meet on ladder. Tonight, after losing a couple games more to tosses and getting pretty tilted I decided to try protoss out for myself.
I got matched against a zerg and decided to do a one base immortal all in because immortals are op. I haven't played a single game as protoss in 3 months (I used to play random sometimes when i was in the lower leagues). I had no idea when to get gas/buildings and didn't know some of the hotkeys. I screwed up the hold position zealot and let a few lings get into my base and lost a couple probes.
Then I built 3 immortals and an assortment of gateway units and pretty much A-moved to victory. EZtoss is EZ. I would probably be high masters in a week if I switched to toss
i got my smurf to masters mmr (playing nothing but masters players for a long period of games) playing as toss after never having played as the race before and it took me like 4 days. pvz i just did 2 base gateway pushes against everyone on most maps altho on maps with easy 3rds i'd just turtle and make a deathball and lol.
pvt was tough, but i'd just go chargelot/archon because it didnt really require any micro and was pretty easy.
so i played a bunch of games yesterday, trying to play all macro. its an interesting experiment. Taking some getting used to.
Using THorzain's tvt, practiced this out of game, but think i only got 1 tvt out of like 10 games. lost the game, did pretty well with fast expo and 2 base play, kind of fell apart when moving to 3 base. Like the style though, think i can make it work. Pretty funny though, using the exact same build, thorzain has like 10-15 more marines at the 10 min mark. apparently he's decent.
For tvz using bombers. Really struggling here. it revolves around 3 CCs, 1 tech lab fact, 1 tech lab rax, 1 react rax, 1 eb. You can use different openings to get there, but thats kind of your early game core. it is super passive, which is very strange to me. don't push out until like 160 supply. oddly enough, i seem to be struggling with infestors more than anything else.
for tvp, i don't really have a set build order or whatever, basically 1 rax expo. was immediately dropping 3 more rax, but i think thats wrong, so i switched to immediately dropping 2 more. tvp is a very strange matchup. tvz, i feel like each game is really close. tvp, i feel the games i lose i get totally crushed, the games i win, i totally crush. I think i need to get a decent build order and that might help things.
terran macro is hard when you're not a masters + type player, definitely the least forgiving of any of the races.
My toss smurf account just got promoted to platinum. my PvP winrate is super high just 4gating. my PvZ sucks. It was almost easier when I'd just 4gate every game than now when I FFE most of the time. When I try to move out (granted my builds kinda suck) I run into a 3base zerg with 50 roaches and just get overrun. That being said I find ZvP to be the easiest on my diamond zerg account just by basically doing the same thing.
PvT is fun because I usually just turtle up and go for storm, and nobody goes ghosts in the lower leagues. Storming huge bio balls is super fun.
Also, blink stalkers have to be the most fun unit in the game. They make me miss warcraft 3 micro wars.
Yes because queueing and mules are so punishing to terrans. lol
Well zerg you can use all your larvae at once if you forget to macro. If you start floating minerals as toss you can build a bunch of gateways. If you float minerals as terran you can build a bunch of barracks/factories/starports but since they'll often need add ons I do find it to be the least forgiving to novice players.
Also remembering to train workers can be hard for novice players. I know I still find myself forgetting sometimes after like 300 games as terran/toss, though it is much easier now.
personally i just have trouble with econ management once at 3 base and way more past that.
Here is my comparison to zerg (mind you this is just a comparison of a single thing, i still think zerg is probably the more difficult race to manage).
zerg has to build a single tech structure for each unit, then to build more, all you build is more hatches. To build more units, zerg just builds additional hatches.
For terran, its not build 1 building and it increases your army production capacity however you want. For Terran i have to plan what production i want on 1 base, 2 base, 3 base, 4 base etc.
what i mean is
1 base -> spawn pool maybe bane nest or roach
2 base -> spire or infest pit
3 base -> infest or spire and great spire or ultra cav
4 base -> great spire or ultra cav
1 base -> rax fact port
2 base -> rax rax fact
3 base -> rax fact port
4 base -> rax rax rax
on 4 base zerg have 7 production structures, terran has 12, not including an additional 12 add ons. I'm not including ebays and evo chambers as they effectively cancel each other out, however we can add ghost academy, armory, and fleet beacon (lol) to this on the terran side.
another way to put this is total number of times i have to build something, 4 base vs 4 base, not including defensive structures (assuming we are both building turrets/bunkers and spores/spines)
4 base zerg
5 hatches (1 macro) 1 bane 1 roach 1 lair 1 spire 1 infestor 1 hydra 1 hive 1 ultra 1 greater spire (evos excluded as well as double spire for double ups)
total building commands 14
4 base terran
4 cc 8 rax 8 rax addon 3 fact 3 fact add on 2 port 2 port add on 1 ghost 1 armory
total building commands 32
I realize a some of this is made up for the fact that zerg has to do injects, which i don't acknowledge, and thats definitely a valid point.
Again, i'm not saying that zerg is easier, but i just wanted to give some examples of how a low level terran can struggle in macro games (even with the best macro mechanic) for those who don't play the race.
the biggest struggle for me when i play T is adding enough production. mules are so different than anything i ever experience when i play P or Z. i look up and i see like 1k minerals and i'm like WTF how'd those get there?
it's just really important to throw down enough production per base. i even sometimes throw down more (like 3 rax + 1 factory) if i'm on my third base, just because my macro with T isn't as good.
i also have the same problem with protoss as well at times...throwing down enough gates is easy when i play vs. zerg (because you often use gates to wall off your third), but against T, i sometimes slip.
Well zerg you can use all your larvae at once if you forget to macro.
Nope! If you forget to macro, you have no larvae to use.
Queens are worth 1.5x the larvae that a hatchery puts out, are under half the price, and can stockpile up to 16(?) larvae at once compared to a hatchery limit of 3. The game is balanced on queens being in constant usage.
A huge part of playing zerg well is hitting injects consistently throughout the game. Other races can stockpile energy to boost/mule out stuff at a rapid pace. Zerg simply can't play catch up: if you fall behind, you fall behind.
