Even if you wanted it, how the heck would you enforce it? People would just pull the plug or afk or whatever

oh gosh no. this would be painful/sad to watch and would make matches so much longer than they need to be.

seems to me everyone in pro sc2 besides idra is in the never-give-up camp and all wait too long before leaving

i just hope to god that if brood war ever dies completely that fantasy just retires rather than switches to sc2. his waiting too long to quit tendencies are so bad they have their own TL thread

So weird.

Some people tend to not want to fight an almost unwinnable situation, especially in tournaments because it is really tiring, and they just want to focus on the next game. and they don't see the potential risk of playing the next game worse because of the previous lengthy game for the "1 in a million" win

I think forcing for every building to be destroyed to win a game wouldn't work, even on ladder it could be extremely annoying
Fair enough.

I personally think that at least the biggest of the big tournaments should have a fight til the last man rule because it's almost as much about the spectators as it is about the players (ad revenue, growing the game, ticket sales, etc), but I understand the counter argument and don't think it's crazy or anything.

The thing is, when people are in high pressure situations they will sometimes make mistakes they'd never otherwise make. So if a player has a decisive advantage, there's always the chance that he trips over himself because he feels the pressure of closing out a situation that he knows he should close out. Then eventually there would be the "remember when that one player came back from (insert SC lingo that I don't know yet)? That was so sick, etc."

Anyway, I'm a total SC noob so obviously what I'm saying needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

And this is why what i'm saying need to be taken with a grain of salt. I don't even know what I'm watching yet haha. I just see people gg'ing in the middle of a battle and I am disappoint.

But I guess as I learn the game I will know more about why they're quitting and just how hopeless it really is at that point.

I'm referring to live tournaments, not online ladders.

loK after you've played a decent number of ladder games you'll understand why the GG is there. It just wastes the time and you will learn to spot zero win situations.

Yeah, after writing all that and thinking about it for a few, what you're saying seems obvious.

Plus I just watched a game where the player who won didn't notice his opponent quit out until about two minutes later. He was going around destroying bases and whanot and it was pretty damn boring to watch.

I'll now save my noob comments until I've at least played a decent amount.

It would be absolutely absurd to establish this rule imo. Let's go to the extremes here, let's imagine a XvT. The terran is getting cheesed very early in the game and has theoretically absolutely no chance of winning. We all know that there's some people who just like to BM or to commonly troll on the ladder. What would prevent the terran player to lift off his CC in the middle of nowhere just to wait that his opponent gets sone air tech? Absolutely nothing. This non-written rule of gg'ing out of a game has been put in function for our common interest. It saves our time as a viewer, and their time as a player because they know that they can start all over again in a new game.

Zero win spot is very easy to spot imo and you should'nt waste your time trying to get that godlike win. Just gg and hop into a new game and ty to learn from your mistakes that you have previsouly done and to get better as a SC player.

Posting here to avoid making a new thread as sure someone will be able to answer it.

To someone completely new to SC (never played 1 and just bought 2), whats the best way to start from scratch? Play through the entire campaign and try to do it on hardest level, or jump straight into playing practice games against the comp after watching tutorials?

Depends what you want to do. If you want to play multiplayer just hop into practice league.

Campaign/vs comp are useless.

Just beat a 300 apm zerg with a 6 gate and my blistering 80 apm.

i never played the campaign. well i did once a couple months ago when my internet went down, but i got bored really quickly.

i just started playing practice league games, learned some basic builds (4 gate and 3 rax) and went from there. after 2 practice league games i decided they were stupid and laddered, was placed in bronze and worked my way up from there. i had no prior RTS experience and really no idea how to play an RTS or macro or this or that, so it was a learning experience for quite some time, but i made diamond in like 2 months from starting i think.

(and then promptly took a 2+ months break which set me significantly back lol)

and then finally got back in the swing of things and... changed my race.

then i was getting up to speed there and... i took another month+ break.

now ive been playing consistently for a little and feel much more confident about my game.

point 1: i dont think vs. comp is useless if you are practicing micro, build orders and very basic mechanics (such as larva inject, creep spread, chronoboost, etc.). one of the things that really made me a lot better was doing the multi-tasking trainer while trying to max out as quickly as possible. sparked a HUGE jump in my game.

point 2: how can one use APM if... one is trapped by forcefields?

Multiplayer doesn't sound much fun. I'd rather just play 1 vs 1. Still straight into practice league? Bear in mind I don't know what buildings build what units or literally anything
