I had a very similar game happen about two days ago. I had pretty much the same build/composition/timing as you for the most part and he went roach/hydra with upgrades. I was pretty disturbed to see those hydras just mowing all of my units down like they were nothing.

What could you have done differently? I mean, even if you see his comp, it's a bit too late to completely switch techs (ie. instead of a blink build, go for more colossus type build). I saw you got out a late colossus (that didn't matter at that point).

I dunno....well played by him. It's hard to be aggressive as well on some of these new maps- they are so large and it's so easy to be caught out of position at times. So on one hand, you want to force the Z to build some units instead of drones, but it's hard to actually apply said pressure.

ppl play for different reasons. if you think it's fun to switch it up and play random (for various reasons), good deal....but it's going to be very very hard to be decent if you play as random (unless you grind a ton of games).

I don't take the game seriously at all. I basically only play team games though I've been laddering more recently as it seems people are not playing the game as much...as least my old 2v2 and 3v3 partners. (minecraft *****)

Orange I can show you plenty of games where people try to go hydra and I still crush. I don't think I have to do anything in particular to counter them, it's just hard when they macro 60-80 supply ahead and it's not drones lol.

couple things:

you should've blocked his hatch and made him wait for lings. not sure if its better to micro the probe or just drop the pylon, but theres no reason to let him take a pool/hatch before lings are out.

also, i think that 7 gate blink build is getting a bit dated. it just doesnt hit fast enough before the zerg 3 base econ kicks in. i mean, he had 60 drones and possibly could have squeezed out a few more before you even moved out. that was kinda interesting by him to go hydra, i normally just use roach/ling. I suppose that was a reaction to getting the money scout in.


i think in that particular situation, you would have been better served to just fall back, break the rocks, and defend that choke with FF and go stalker/coll


also, how are you behind pool --> hatch with forge --> nexus? pretty sure you are even in workers until his 3rd gets up

Well there are a few things. I like to do it when I don't see a fast third. If I see a fast third, my build changes entirely. It's definitely not dated, at least not at my level, because I have been crushing with it lately.

Also, for the record, when I expand I always go gates then expand. I think that is better, so I wouldn't say that making 6-7 gates is necessarily indicative of an all in or heavy pressure attack.

I should have blocked the hatch, but I was checking for gas and it just slipped my mind.

There is no way to defend 2 separate chokes there. Not that I can think of anyway.

why cant you take the base right below your natural as your 3rd, wall off where the rocks are and then defend the middle?

I guess I could, timing wise it was just kinda hard since he hit 200/200 so fast lol. Such is a free third though amirite? Tbh I just don't feel comfortable on the new maps. I don't really know the layouts even.

When your first 3 gates warped in and you poked out to the tower, zerg had 60 drones on 3 bases and only 8 lings. From that point on he spent every single larva on roaches and hydras.

I don't think it's possible to beat zerg when it has this advantage (without DTs). It doesn't even matter what your unit composition is when zerg can double your army supply. So I don't think a colossus build would've changed the outcome much.

The ideal timing is probably when his 3rd finishes, at the 8:00 mark. I'd cut probes at like 32, stay on 2 gas and get up 5 gates in time in for warp gate. Of course, you can't really scout to see if he has taken a third until it's too late to execute a specific all-in like this (although you could send in your first zealot to scout).

As played, the best thing you can do is probably attack him ASAP and hope for the best. I do think many zergs fail to realize the power of just getting ~60 drones on 3 bases against toss and then just swarming in an endless wave of units. It's not hard to get away with on a large map like shipyard.

Or, of course, you can take your third super early too.

I didn't scout at all, that was my problem. Just sort of hoped I could win by brute force. Oh well.

Honestly I think he would have held any 5 or 6 gate build, but that's just speculation on my part.

Yeah, he ****ed it up pretty hard then. You're supposed to throw down like 5 spines if you scout a 6gate, and deter the toss with mass lings (which you will have at that timing). If he tries to break you, then you use the lings to buffer the spines from the toss army, and he loses once infestors pop (they are pretty close at this point I believe). Tbh though, the lings you have at the timing can probably crush the attack alone if you catch them OOP. Maybe it's because I'm playing diamond tosses who are just bad lol.

also, on maps where protoss can FFE (which seem to be a few more this season)- how do we stop zergs from just taking the map and droning insanely hard? seems like stargate play might be more necessary. gospy's replay is something i've seen alot of zergs do, just laugh at my FFE and drone drone drone. i think some early pressure is needed somehow...but these maps are so ****ing big that i'm scared to move out and get caught out of position.

can we not just wall off another natural with cannons/gates in a way that some people have started to do on shakuras and take a real quick third ourselves with an easy fourth?

the guy just massively cheated towards drones and just crossed his fingers you wouldn't attack him. no ling speed, no burrow, no spine crawlers, roach warren only 1/2 done at 8:00. no way he can hold a 5/6gate.

Yea I sometimes 50/50 Toss, pray it's not a 6gate and drone my little heart out. I just concede a loss to a 6gate. Since most Toss, at least at that time, were erring towards robo play, I was winning lots of games.

She did cheat a bit, but I think it's a reasonable gamble against a ffe. Skipping ling speed entirely was a little ballsy lol. She definitely stayed on top of her macro very well. Creep spread, injects etc were all there. I'm not as intimately familiar with your builds as you are gospy, but I know you were mentioning how everyone's doing the ling/infestor bizniz lately. Any chance you've subconsciously bent your build towards that and away from roach/hydra?
