Fwiw, gsl is on first, so maybe watch that first. Especially if you listen to tastoisis who could spoil it. Who knows.

On that note, maybe I'm forgetting, but has gsl and asl been on the same night before?

Flash/Soma series was worth the watch. Not too many games going beyond tier 2 tech so not a huge time sink either

Series kinda felt mildly unlucky for Flash. Rolling 3/6 Zerg games and a lot of his gambles not really working out. But, of course, that's the nature of picking Random/gambling builds and he chose to do both, so it's not exactly worthy of complaint. I do wish we had seen a PvZ from Flash that didn't involve him not building a forge and not cancelling a nexus vs 9pool speed. But Soma certainly earned the win, and I look forward to watching him hopefully take the tournament.

I admittedly understand very little about BW strategy/builds, but why is this the case? It seems to me that it would be especially easy to go FFE on that map, given the artificially narrowed ramp with the neutral structures. Sure, building the nexus ASAP is clearly the ideal, but is it really so disadvantageous to focus on your wall first?

Either way, my sentiment was more that I wish we saw a Flash PvZ on equal terms, which that game clearly was not, despite Flash's resilience after the disastrous opening .

With the natural being in the backdoor and with there being no easy way for Zerg to attack that prior to mutas it's much better to just stick a gateway in between the neutral buildings and wall off that way, continuing to block with the first pylon + zealots

Yes that's my understanding of protoss openings on that map. No ffe or rather, no need for it like on every other map. The tech comes out so much faster.

So do you just gamble that you don't play against 9pool speed like Soma did, or did Flash just mess up the defense? It looked like Flash had pretty much zero chance to prevent the lings getting in his base, and that's even with Soma initially sending his lings to the wrong spawn location.

I'm not sure why flash didn't bring probes to help wall, or retreat his zealots to the buildings as opposed to the ramp. He even scouted additional lings, though not ling speed. Dunno.

had this thought about halfway through asl, spoiler alerts, but they actually didnt spoil.

it happens fairly often and they usually mention it. mostly the saturdays i think

Build order wins have been a thing since forever though, don't think that wall seemed optimal in any case as the gap between pylon/gateway didn't look ling tight at all

Also got to think that Soma is playing vs random, nobody seems to go 12h ZvZ nowadays so 9p speed wouldn't work if Flash rolled zerg and it's a pretty crappy build against terran as well, so it's even more reasonable to think that Soma would go pool on 12 at the earliest

Last game was nuts. Did having the extra upgrades cost soma enough mutas that he got snowballed? Armor upgrades don't do much vs mass scourge...

I thought maybe in cross spawns, etc, soma had bought though time for the upgrades to kick in.

Also for game 5, how does that work like ever? Obviously soma going pool first helped. I thought zero's idea was to have soma wall off the ramp and then surprise him with the lings and then flood him. Though wouldn't soma see the creep well in advance of this?

Yeah, Soma would probably have seen the creep, but as he went pool first and had lings in Zero's base he'd be able to realise based on the amount of stuff Zero had that there had to be a proxy hatch somewhere before then, hence why he had a sunken in his main.

It works against 12 hatch or if you otherwise don't have lings available to defend, Zero pulled this off against Hyuk on Match Point previously, and I think someone said he tried the same thing again in ASL, I think it's mostly just meta game purposes and at 3-1 in a final it's a fairly safe spot to do it. Whether it's really that effective these days with the level of drone micro people have, idk

I think he also got outmicroed a bit as well. At some point he was up 7 or 8 supply even with the 1/1.
