so the whole reason mech could be considered weak in the past was that while the terran was turtling, zerg could mine out the rest of the map and be cost inefficient because of the resource discrepancy after being up 1-2 bases in endgame, right

so now when i watch GSL it seems kind of a gentlemen's agreement that terran will get their half of the map...but then i see them sit in the middle of the map with their deathballs barely doing anything and zerg doesn't even attempt to expand to any base on terran's side despite having 90 drones and 6k minerals. am i missing something?

Someone had a game, I think against Maru? Maybe it was Dark? Where they tried sneaking some bases on the other guy's side of the map on Blackpink and were reasonably successful until the other guy scouted it.

But yeah, in particular maps like Blackpink and Backwater have these bases on the diagonal edge where it would really behoove Zerg to try mining those out when the Terran is still on 4-5 bases and can't necessarily move out their whole army to attack without taking a big risk in the process.

-Anyone in the WoL/early HOTS days is beaten by Mvp (including legends like NesTea, MC, and MMA)

Then among those three it's really hard to pick....gun to my head I'd probably say Innovation>SoS>Mvp. I feel like Mvp is clearly the weakest but this gets into the whole "define GOAT criteria" rabbit hole. Then we have SoS who has 0 GSLs but i'd bet money would be at the bottom of every top player's list of opponents and has a strong collection of tournament wins to his name as well. Then you have innovation who's tied with MvP for most GSLs and who to a lot of people seems to be the mechanically perfect player.

Also interesting would be if you talk about the Brood War concept of bonjwa. Probably to me that would be something along the lines of Mvp, Life, Zest, then maybe innovation?

I think you're overlooking MC

Isn't he still the leading money winner?

Random thought: I remember back when Blizzard said they needed to nerf overlord drops in order to make Protoss openers other than stargate viable...and since then, stargate -> phoenix -> oracle -> *insert any of a handful of builds that will kill Zerg if they respond improperly and can't be scouted now that phoenixes have killed their overlords* has become more entrenched as the standard opener in every single PvZ
