I would never hate on someone trying to be a pro starcraft player, but you can def. hate on someone's dreams if they're silly enough

Pretty sure the same thing happened when Scrolls got released, though not quite as many people. In two weeks, it'll be just another game on Twitch with a couple thousand viewers.

Personally, I'm waiting for Hex instead.

Edit: And clearly I should follow kaitlyn's lead and pursue a career in pro-gaming, considering I'm fairly certain I've never been worse than her at the game lol.

You mean like thousands of people on 2p2 who did the exact same thing to play poker?

It's not even remotely close to the same thing. At all.

To a lot of lowstakes grinders it was, also she prob has some venue of money if she puts it on hold. But yeah obv it's a bad idea since SC2 is falling apart in terms of the scene and its still a huuuge skill gap.

No.
The skill gap becoming pro in sc2 to playing poker for a living isn't remotely the same.

Mechanically/mentally, you have to be great at sc2 to make any money to pay your bills

For poker, just to have enough income to pay bills, you can be nearly brain dead and fold like 95% of your hands while multi-tabling and playing your hands aggressively. You just auto pilot for folding.

Now, before everyone runs in here to defend poker. I never said poker isn't hard and that you don't need any skill to play it. I'm just saying to make money at poker takes less talent than it does at playing sc2.

I am not saying that one isn't harder than the other. I'm saying again: you can be an average person with an average brain with no hand/eye coordination and make money at poker. This same person will not make any money at sc2. Hence my statement about them not being the same.

if she starts getting more stream views (like, consistently in thousands, i would guess) , then *maybe* you can start trying to compare them- but until that happens, it's not really close

Tits def help you more in SC2 than in poker.

It took me like 4h in coaching to make a losingplayer to a winningplayer(obviously a bit more on his part)who made like 750$/month. In Sc2 some people will never be able to compete at a prolevel. I`d say it`s comparable to someone trying to start at NL 400-600.

I think you're right. I think that you need consistently need around 2-3k viewers and to stream like 6 hours a day to make anywhere resembling a normal check.

Because I know stephano at one point was getting like 600-800/hour with 17k viewers doing 90s ads in between games. But stephano is stephano. I'm sure he had a better deal.

lol well ... in livepoker you might have an advantage but well I meant online. The advantage you got there is that a lot of creeps will hit on you and some of those creeps might be good at the game and help you out to improve.

I don't think she expects to be winning tournaments any time soon. Popular streamers can actually make a surprising amount of money from subscriptions and fan donations. I doubt she is making big bucks at the moment though. She could also try sell coaching to the goofyballers of the world. She might even be able to get a job doing esports interviews or something. I'm not saying it's smart for her to delay school to play sc2, but there is a big difference between her and some random dude of similar sc2 skill in terms of their ability to make money off the game. Also sometimes you just gotta chase your dreams baby.

especially if you're doing something like applying to very competitive graduate programs where one of the biggest things they care about is what you've done with your life

while "i took a few years off to chase my dreams and play video games" might sound great to us, grad school programs are going to take a big lol at that

so when i see that she's 25 (several years out of university) and playing starcraft professionally (i will assume for the rest of this she doesn't have a full time job on the side), i think one of a few things

1. she is not actually directly putting off med school/jobs. she's putting off her future in the same way that i'm putting off learning to speak korean- it's what i want to do, and i sometimes take steps to start, but it's not something that i ever really expect will happen

2. she is stupid

3. she is one of those very idealistic people that honestly thinks this is a good idea (not really separate from #2, but sort of an additional possibility).

i mean, who knows- maybe she has some EV formula in her head that my non-engineering brain can't understand that has it as a good decision to do this, but i can't imagine that someone with the patience, intelligence, and dedication to succeed in SC2 esports wouldn't be better off doing just about anything else.

I don't like the combined mech ground/air upgrades, because mech is boring to watch and play against imo. I guess there are a lot of people that want to see more mech though, and this change might not even result in a ton of mech games.
