Same happened to me. I was placed in Silver despite bronze level skills. I went Bronze>Silver>Gold my next seasons so its cool you'll improve. The MMR will have you playing opponents your skill in short order anyway.

spent most of my evening coaching my friend (who is like high plat/low D level Z)... which basically consisted of sitting behind him IRL, om noming mcdonalds and screaming things at him for the 15 minutes each game lasted.

he won most of his games tho. one guy even accused him of map hacking.

live coaching sc2 is pretty hard... first of all, someone at a lower level just isn't going to be fast enough to do all the things that come to your mind. it's hard for me to hold some stuff back and not say it. im sure if a top level GM or DRG were sitting behind me, they'd feel the same frustration.

second of all, it's not just their own speed... they have to hear what you are saying, process it and then do it all while maintaining basic control over the game. that's pretty tough.

finally, especially in a match like zvz, by time i take what he needs to do, put it into words, articulate it to him and he hears it... it's too late. some stuff in zvz just has to be an instant, instinctual reaction. that's the sort of thing you can only really learn by replay analysis and trial and error. in fact, ive received help in all my match-ups, but zvz is something that just took me a really long time to learn, despite receiving some high level review.... you just gotta fail a lot to figure it out. hell i still dont entirely understand the match-up.

a much better way to coach sc2 (which i dont think is done often), is to review replays, spot issues and then offer basic, repetitive drills or goals for people to work on over and over again piecemeal before they figure out the big picture. it's tough stuff with how fast the game moves.

Live coaching is probably not optimal for strategy/tactics but I find it really really helpful for the basics like mechanics, scouting, checking minimap, etc. My friend who only watches and doesn't play would help me out quite a bit when he watched me play just by pointing out that stuff. Too bad he doesn't do so anymore :*(

Someday I'll understand what the **** the difference is between any of these maps. Some of them have lots of bases, some of them have less, all of them have a ramp, and then down the ramp is where I should put my next command center. There are usually lots of other places command centers can go but I haven't gotten far enough to be putting them down yet. Then I build an army and click where I think the opponent's base is and sometimes I'm right.

And you guys are talkin about rocks? WE'RE TALKIN ROCKS?

Two wins tonight, both against zergs that tried to go banelings early. That plan didn't go particularly well for either of them, my micro isn't great but it still wasn't that tough to avoid them. Built enough marines/marauders to kill the first guy on my first try, the second guy I hurt pretty bad and took out his expo and just kept the troops coming (my 2 bases to his 1) and he eventually folded.

Several losses obv, the most devastating of which was against a terran that wasn't macroing particularly well (he took forever to expand), so I was trying to get my economy to the point that I could get some banshees to take out his forward bunkers + siege tanks...

...when all of a sudden he lands 3 siege tanks and 12 marines in the back of my base with like 5 medivacs and that single ****ing drop took out my entire army of prob like 12 marauders and 40 marines. My troops just got massacred trying to advance on them cause the buildings in my base created choke points.

Not sure what to do about that one really. Turrets in the back? Make air power a priority so I have vikings/banshees to deal with that possibility once he has a starport?

Also, fun fact: I don't think I've beaten a single protoss yet. Toss confirmed OP?

Toss is easiest race for me now, Zerg is annoying but I'm starting to use this 1 rax expo into blue flame hellion run by into 22 rines 3base medivacs with a little mech support depending on their composition- tanks or thors depending on if they go muta or infestor.

IF they scout it and go roach- its ok because you jsut run past the roaches, and I have 2 bunkers at home. If they go ling bling then blue flame hellions destroy their army, if they play defensive then it delays their 3rd a tonne.

AGainst toos at lower leagtues I would just all in if they expo, or expo if they all in. marines tanks and banshees pretty hard for toss to stop and they have to split their army. Also its a good idea to always drop marines when you push or they push

They said they're planning on it. I think they're trying to get rid of the performance issues it causes before rereleasing it into the map pool. They may also try to find some way to ruin it before putting it back in as well. Maybe they'll remove the center bases and the path through them to make it metalopolis 2.0

new 2v2 maps: desolate stronghold is really lame- huge ramp and only 1 expansion that can easily be held.

really big fan of that molten one though...that one is good.

Perhaps this is a good idea. What about unit composition vs. Protoss? I generally try to build a ****ton of marines and marauders, and if the game draws out I get some medivacs and banshees/vikings depending on need as well. This works (if my macro doesn't blow) against Z and T, but against a standard P force of zealots/stalkers/colossi I just get raaaaaaped.

Another question - my last game last night (I was determined to go to bed on a win, which is unfortunate when you're on like a 7 game losing streak) I was up against a Terran who fortified his base pretty well with sieged tanks, bunkers, and turrets. What's a good attack plan against that kind of setup? Try to maneuver around the turrets and do a drop in the back? Overwhelm him with numbers?

I eventually won when he expanded to his third but didn't fortify it so well, so I took it out with my big army, and he right-click-moved (not a-moved) most of his remaining troops to the expo to try to defend, so they got slaughtered while not even fighting back.

collosus aint so bad to deal with just reactor out the vikings and shift attack them. I find high templar much harder to deal with but I think now you just have to keep your units in a ball and kite- split, stretch the toss army and wear it down slowly. If its just collusus just like hlaf or 3rd your army before you stim a-move maybe

2 rax expo is pretty good aswell against a toss fast expand at lower leagues because you can usually get a bunker up by their natural and expand yourself- just kill stalkers whilst avoiding the zealots then kill the zealots-

yeah toss is quite hard to micro against in late game- I don't understand it myself yet, sometimes I concave and it works, sometimes I ball and kite and it works, but most of the time I get raped. Best thing to do is just watch some MLG or GSL TvP games.

I think though that TvZ becomes the hardest matchup as you move up the ladders, my winrate is like 60 against toss 80 against T and 25 against Z

Thanks, I'll check those out when I get home. And yeah, I forgot the game last night where for once I actually had vikings ready for an attack by colossi, and I fended off a bunch of stalkers and a few imms and advanced on his base......

only to get destroyed by psi storms. SIIIIIGH

That's where I need ghosts to EMP or whatever right?

yh- storms on ramps really hurt. Gotta snipe those HT- which is difficult because of high ground. MLG vods are up

watch some tvps. I would just stick with 2 rax though- its very versatile- if they expand you can pressure, if they don't then just make 2 bunkers- hold off their all in then attack on a two base timing like 22 and some medivacs... suicide an scv to check the composition or scan- just to see if its coll or HT. Kiting and map vision is super important thoughm I ahd a game earlier where I ahd a good lead and A nice army srpead and out of now where storm storm storm and zealot charge and by the time I looked- army was annhialted.

Another tip is scout for proxy pylons with your first few units- supply blocking them and costing them the minerals can be quite damaging early. And be careful of dt/void ray aswell

I beat a master in my placement match but got put in diamond again.

I'm pretty sure I played against EmpireHappy yesterday on NA ladder. The account only had 13 1v1 games played and won them all. The account had also observed some games of other Empire players. His APM(epm in game) was over 200, very rare for a player at my level.
