4: Tertiary production facilities (Factory if my secondary is Air, vice versa), or misc support (medivacs, observers)
5: Secondary production (starport, robo).
6: Primary Production (Barracks, gateways, hatcheries)
7: Econ boosts (Nexus, Orbital Command, Queen)
8: Front door supply centers (Extremely convenient for teamplay so you can quickly let the ally out while you're doing your own thing.)
Once you learn production hotkeys, you can have perfect control once they're in play.
I also play random, and I much prefer:
1: Nexus/CC
2: Primary Army
3: Secondary Army
4: Tertiary Army/Air force
5: Primary Production (hatcheries, barracks, gateways)
6: Secondary Production (factories, robotics)
7: Air production (starport/stargate)
8: generally unused (hard for me to hit accurately)
9: observer/overseer
0: (when I remember this one, which I'm really bad at doing) forward pylon where I want to warp units to.
I prefer using 2,3,4 for units, because 1 uses the same finger that A does, which can be a little awkward for attacking.
Also, I'm hoping and praying that when they patch customizable hotkeys, they'll also allow you to rearrange the grid. I really want to use grid keys, but simply cannot adjust to Attack being "T". Too many years of RTS experience where A was attack in every single one of them.
I've been working on a grid layout that moves things around in ways that move a lot of the commonly used keys that are awkward to hit, as well as making things as consistent as possible for the 3 races, but it won't work unless you can move icons around on the grid layout as well as reassign the key.
Every single blizzard game that has ever come out has made me wonder if they actually just pick hotkey layouts at random, or let a roomful of monkeys bang them out, because their default hotkeys have always sucked major ass, and their UIs in general have left much to be desired.
