Or phoenix, roach/hydra is much stronger against toss IMO.

the problem with this is that high templar are a 3rd tier unit. it takes forever to tech that far into the tree. also having zerg go pool --> roach before mutas i'm almost always going for 2/3gate 1robo build to deal with the roaches, so it would take even longer to get there.

i'm finding myself having to go 4gate all in against a fast expanding zerg because i just cannot outmacro them. its so disheartening that you can destroy the zerg army waiting for you at their natural and then boom you have 10 roaches/mutas you have to deal with almost immediately

I usually don't go for mutas against protoss just because I usually open with roaches, then the protoss then gets a load of stalkers to counter them and so any mutas I would get wouldn't be as useful.

i just tested some stuff in the unit tester. stalkers beat mutas in equal numbers w/ no micro even if mutas have +1 attack. thats pretty significant since stalkers are also cheaper than mutas. you need 9 mutas to beat 5 phoenix w/o any micro. since phoenix are faster, have more range, and can fire while moving, they should easily be able to out micro mutas as well.

you should be happy if protoss is using stalkers to counter your roaches because you're probably going to win

Sentries + guardian shield are very good with the splash from mutas as well but yea roaches eat through stalkers, its very hard to support a lot of roaches and muta though, pretty much means you have 3 bases which would be your main problem.

interesting. it doesn't feel like that in game. the problem with phoenix countering mutas is that it requires a starport and it takes almost 4 minutes to get 5 phoenix out while he can get 9 mutas out in 33 seconds if he has the resources

I always thought stalkers did well against roaches. If stalkers don't do that well against roaches then protoss has no gateway units that counter mass roach. sweet.

The spire takes a ridiculously long time to finish too. Also mutas are extremely expensive, if the zerg player loses them then he's probably in trouble. Even if you bring 3 or 4 stalkers to a mineral line against 9 odd mutas, the chances are he won't want to engage with the mutas and fly off for a better opportunity to harass later.

the spire takes 100s v stargates 60s. again, the point is that i would have to preemptively go stargate against zerg to counter them in the first place. if i do that then i'm saying to the zerg, yes, please, go expand wherever you want because i'm going to have to turtle with my few gateway units since i'm spending loads on air units.

you're looking at it wrong. you are correct that a single mutalisk is the cheapest unit. however they are also useless on their own so you need more of them. imo the differentiation vs cheap units and expensive units comes down to the minerals:gas ratio. in that sense they are quite expensive for a unit w/ no spell casting abilities like the other high gas units.

I think PvZ is probably the hardest MU out there right now, that said if you let zerg get 3 bases and a roach army + muta pack well thats not really a balance issue.

If you encountering a ton of muta I would try out some stargate builds because phoenix builds are really strong vs both terran and zerg and they are great for harass.

I think it is up to individual posters to make this judgment when deciding whether or not to accept a bet that is high-risk. That's part of gambling, and I don't really feel the need to protect people from themselves if it's not a widespread issue.

On the other hand, I also don't want to be the bet police. We already perma'd one long-time post this year for welching. If welching and bringing it to the forums becomes a systematic problem, I could enact some guidelines, but outside of one incident (involving a long, long time poster anyways) I don't see the point. It's also worth noting this is not a gambling site and it is not our (or 2+2's... i'm just a volunteer) responsibility to enforce or regulate bets.
