It's got the best dogfighting of any space combat game ever. It's more arcadey than realistic, but seriously fun. There's actually a lot of depth to the gameplay as you have great control over your wingmen, and missions are typically more complex than "destroy everything". For example, you may have to capture a capship by knocking out its engines rather than killing it outright. Battles against capships are epic because they're huge, lethal and difficult to destroy. Your team needs to work together to fight one, e.g. your fighter wing knocks out the capship's turrets and missile launchers while providing cover for the bombers. Or you could fly the bombers yourself.
The best thing is the moddability. The source code was released years ago. As a result, the community has seriously updated the graphics and created loads of custom campaigns. They've even ported over the original freespace game and its expansion. Go to this site:
